When we lk at a lvely baby, a puppy r a really cute kitten, many f us want t squeeze it. Why is that?
Accrding t a study published in the jurnal Frntiers in Behaviral Neurscience, it’s a typical experience f “cute aggressin”. The experience results frm the fight between the brain’s “emtin system”, which impels (驱使) peple t squeeze cute things, and its “reward system” which deals with feelings f “wanting”.
In the study, 54 participants between the ages f 18 and 40 were presented with fur grups f phts. Tw f the grups f phts were f cute human babies and animals and the ther tw were f less adrable adult humans and animals. As the participants lked at the phts, there searchers watched their brain activities.
Accrding t the researchers, the participants reward systems were fund t be active as they lked at the cute babies, and they seemed t be verwhelmed (征服的). By cntrast, the reward systems f the peple lking at the less cute adults were fund t be inactive, and they seemed t be less impelled by their reward systems.
This suggests that cute things activate their emtin systems in such a way that peple are verwhelmed by the experience f cuteness. But reward systems wrk against these emtins by creating the desire t prtect cute things.
As Katherine Stavrpuls, the lead researcher f this study at the University f Califrnia in the US tld Science Alert, “The cute aggressin is the brain’s way f ‘bringing us back dwn’ by balancing ur feelings f being verwhelmed.”
Stavrpuls cmpared this prcess f balancing t an evlutinary adaptatin. Such an adaptatin may have taken place t ensure that peple are able t cntinue taking care f creatures they cnsider particularly cute.
S, althugh cute babies and adrable animals may lk cmpletely helpless, their vulnerable (易受伤害的) appearance may in fact help them t survive.

Asking fr feedback (反馈) is an essential step in yur design prcess regardless f whether yur wrk is finished r nt. 61 Yu may d this in team meetings. Yu may d this after a persn stares at yur wrks fr tw hurs, r after yu pst what yu’ve just created. But in yur effrt t imprve, it’s vital t understand the characteristics that separate three types f feedback.
Reactin-based feedback tends t be casual and emtinal. Fr example, “That’s wnderful!” Feedback f this type is driven by what a persn thinks he is expected t say r what the designer wants t hear. 62 This kind f reactin has little t d with what is being presented.
63 Fr example, “Yu shuld include a wider range f clrs and make them match.” That’s als where such feedback ends. In this frm f feedback, the individual prviding it is ften lking fr ways t bring the creatin mre in line with his wn expectatins fr designs.
When yu are designing smething, yu need t have a specific purpse. When lking fr feedback, yu are wrking t understand whether yur creatin apprpriately meets the purpse. 64 And that’s exactly what is ffered by a critique (批判性反馈), the third kind f feedback. Fr example, “If the purpse is t attract kids, it is fantastic t have a clrful castle-like building. Dn’t use dark clth, and avid large furniture.” Cmment f this type helps yu tell if yur wrk has achieved the desired utcme. 65 .

B. Directin-based feedback begins with a suggestin.
C. Smetime yu need t turn t thers fr their cmments.
D. It’s this frm f feedback that is mst helpful t yur design.
