Don't call it a comeback; drive-in movie theaters have been here for years Given the current need for social distancing,drive-ins are once again seeing a surge(暴涨)in popularity and this list of 4 highlights some of the best theaters across the country.
    Maryland: Bengies Drive-In Theatre
The 64-year-old Bengies (in Middle River) boasts the biggest movie theater screen in the states. It measures 52 feet high by 120 feet wide, which means films aren't cropped to fit the display. The Middle River business' season is longer than most as they open in early spring and don't close until late fall.
    Oregon:99W Drive-in
Only 23 miles from Portland in Newberg, the drive-in has been in the same family since Grandpa Francis built it in 1953. Unlike many of its competitors, the 99W rules allow folks to bring in outside food.
    Illinois: Harvest Moon Twin Drive-In
Go green while going to the movies in Gibson City, Illinois. Although the entertainment complex got its start in 1954, the family in charge nowadays has started several eco-friendly initiatives(措施)since taking over in 1989 including installing(安装)LED lighting, using recycled materials, and powering approximately 25 percent of their operations with solar and wind energy.
    Pennsylvania: Shankweiler’s Drive-in Theatre
Wilson Shankweiler opened the country’s second drive-in in Pennsylvania in April 1934. Today, it stands as the oldest still-operating drive-in in the country. It is to be respected as it has lasted through changing technology, going from speakers on poles to digital projection(数码投影)and sound in 2013, and survived 1955’s Hurricane Diane.

Ernest Hemingway, like all writers, means different things to different people. To some,he represents a hunting, drinking, smoking, and aggressive male.To my high school mind,he was just some old white guy going on about a fisherman desperate to catch a large sea fish—though Ms.Frederieks,my English teacher, had forced us to read The Old Man and the Sea,I didn't come to appreciate it,nor any of Hemingway's books, until much later. But in my early 20s,someone mailed me a dusty copy of Hemingway's first novel,The Sun Also Rises.I'd never read anything quite like it—and haven't since.
Today marks the 90th anniversary of the publication of that book,A masterpiece of the form,The Sun Also Rises is a rare achievement in its power. Its brief yet evocative(引起共鸣的)sentences made a strong impression as I was beginning to develop my own love of words;“Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it?”one character asks narrator Jake,an American newspaper reporter.“Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already?”
None of Hemingway's other works, though some were good and even great, quite expressed the idea of desire and longing that his first novel does. But there's also an obvious sadness that affects the entire novel, which,in truth,is what attracted me more than anything. How could these depressed and often insufferable characters be drawn so beautifully? And how on earth could such simple, undecorated writing carry this kind of emotional weight?Nathaniel Hawthorne says it best:"Easy reading is extremely hard writing."
But for me,it's much more than that. When I read? The Sun Also Rises-and I go back to it every few yeas-I'm instantly transported to Pamplona, where Hemingway's characters go to watch the bullfights.I visited Pamplona as a kid with my family, and I too watched the bullfights with my father—who randomly sent me this wonderful book.
    4. What did the author think of Hemingway when he way in high school?
    A. A puzzle B. A specialist. C. A legend. D. A passer-by.
    5. What do we know about The Sun Also Rises?
    A. It is a best seller. B. It was published a century ago.
    C. Its simple words are appealing. D. It's Hemingway's most popular novel.
    6. What can we infer about the author from the text?
    A. He is crazy about travelling. B. He was greatly affected by the book
    C. He attached importance to reading. D. He enjoyed looking back on old days.
    7. Which column is the passage possibly from?
    A. Review. B. News. C. Anecdote. D. History.
D 5. C 6. B 7. A

根据第二段中“Today marks the 90th anniversary of the publication of that book, A masterpiece of the form, The Sun Also Rises is a rare achievement in its power. 【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But there's also an obvious sadness that affects the entire novel, which,in truth,is what attracted me more than anything.”(但整部小说也有一种明显的悲伤,事实上,这是最吸引我的地方。)以及第四段中“But for me,it's much more than that. When I read? The Sun Also Rises-and I go back to it every few years”(但对我来说,远不止这些。

Shoppers around the world are crazy buying because of fears over the coronavirus(新型冠状病毒), which caused a critical plague in China and even other countries at the beginning of 2020. People in countries such as England, Japan, Singapore and Australia have been emptying supermarket shelves of toilet paper, face masks, hand wash products and dried and canned food. Photos and videos of shoppers in Australia quarreling over the last pack of toilet roll in a supermarket have spread across social media swiftly.
However, governments have advised their citizens that there is no need to "panic buy". They added that panic buying would only reduce the supply of products needed by patients and medical staff, which could exacerbate the problems the COVID-19 virus is causing. Singapore's prime minister comforted Singaporeans that: "We have enough supplies. There's no need to stock up." A week after the panic buying fever, things have calmed down and shoppers have gone back to purchasing items in normal quantities.
Psychologists say panic buying is an "unwise" behaviour that is part of a condition called FOMO一the fear of missing out. Dr. Katharina Wittgens said a herd mentality(从众心理)sets in during disasters that causes people to copy the actions of others. People watch the news of items being bought in quantity and immediately rush out to the stores to do the same. She said people were taking on too much the risks of dying from the coronavirus. She said: "Far more people die in car accidents or household accidents per year but we don't panic about these things in the morning before we go to work."
    8. What is the reason for shoppers in different countries crazy buying?
    A. The approach of 2020 New Year's Day.
    B. The shortage of resources and supplies in their nations.
    C. The discount from supermarkets.
    D. Their concern about the virus.
    9. What does the word "exacerbate" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. release B. worsen
    C. solve D. quicken
    10. What caused this behavior according to expert?
    A. People think no one needs the supplies.
    B. People do not believe what others said.
    C. People tend to follow others' actions in the period of disaster.
    D. People are wiser in making decisions.
    11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. People should not panic over the virus.
    B. People want to do something different from others.
    C. People buy little when they go to the stores.
    D. More people die from car accidents.
D 9. B 10. C 11. A
根据第一段第一句“Shoppers around the world are crazy buying because of fears over the coronavirus, which caused a critical plague in China and even other countries at the beginning of 2020.”
根据第二段中“They added that panic buying would only reduce the supply of products needed by patients and medical staff,”可知,他们补充说,恐慌性购买只会减少患者和医护人员所需产品的供应。另结合下文中“A week after the panic buying fever, things have calmed down and shoppers have gone back to purchasing items in normal quantities.”
Katharina Wittgens said a herd mentality(从众心理)sets in during disasters that causes people to copy the actions of others.”
根据最后一段中“Psychologists say panic buying is an "unwise" behaviour that is part of a condition called FOMO一the fear of missing out.” A.“People should not panic over the virus.” 故选A。

    D
Tests during criminal investigations (调查). But the test results are not always correct. When the police asked a person questions important to a criminal case, a fast heartbeat or sweaty hands might make a nervous truth-teller appear to be lying. And, an experienced liar might be able to control those signs and avoid suspicion (怀疑).
Our eyes look at a familiar face differently than they look at an unfamiliar one. When people look at unfamiliar faces, their eyes usually move from one feature, like the shape of the nose, to other features. Their eyes stop quickly as they try to identify the unknown person. When looking at a familiar face, people usually direct their attention to just a few features. But the researchers want to know if people could change those when they are hiding the truth.
The researchers showed 48 students pictures of both strangers and professors they knew. They asked all of the students to try to appear honest while they were lying about recognizing familiar faces. The researchers told some students to stop in the same areas when they were looking at both familiar and unfamiliar faces. Their eyes would start on the person’s forehead. Next, they looked at each eye, and then moved from one ear to the other, then down to the nose, mouth and chin.
In most cases, the students who tried to hide their recognition were not able to do so. When they looked at a familiar face, their eyes still had fewer stops in the inner parts of the face. Alisa Millen, a psychology researcher at the University of Stirling, said hiding markers for facial recognition in eye movements is difficult, especially if you know that person well. She added the more the students tried to hide recognition of a face, the more obvious it was. Millen hopes that the findings can someday be used in law enforcement (执法). She believes such knowledge could help investigators have a clearer understanding of who is connected to whom in a criminal case.
    12. While looking at unfamiliar faces, our eyes usually ________.
    A. view more facial features with stops B. make indirect contact with them
    C. notice familiar features first D. focus on their eye movements
    13. What method did the participants in the study use to hide their recognition?
    A. To stop their eyes occasionally.
    B. To fix their eyes on one facial feature.
    C. To have longer stops on unfamiliar faces.
    D. To observe facial features in a certain order.
    14. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
    A. The students in the study are good liars.
    B. The findings are widely used by the police.
    C. It’s difficult for students to hide their true thoughts.
    D. It’s reliable to see if someone is lying by their eye movements.
    15. What is Alisa Millen’s attitude towards the application of the findings?
    A. Positive B. Doubtful.
    C. Confused. D. Negative.
A 13. D 14. D 15. A
根据第二段“When people look at unfamiliar faces, their eyes usually move from one feature, like the shape of the nose, to other features. Their eyes stop quickly as they try to identify the unknown person”(当人们看着不熟悉的面孔时,他们的眼睛通常会从一个特征,比如鼻子的形状,移动到其他特征。)
根据第三段中的“The researchers told some students to stop in the same areas when they were looking at both familiar and unfamiliar faces Their eyes would start on the person’s forehead. Next, they looked at each eye, and then moved from one ear to the other, then down to the nose, mouth and chin. ”(研究人员告诉一些学生,当他们看到熟悉和不熟悉的面孔时,停在同一个区域。他们的眼睛会从这个人的前额开始。接下来,他们看每只眼睛,然后从一只耳朵移到另一只耳朵,然后再移到鼻子、嘴巴和下巴。)由此可知,实验参与者按照特定的顺序观察熟人和陌生人的面部特征。D项符合题意,故选D。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“When they looked at a familiar face, their eyes still had fewer stops in the inner parts of the face. Alisa Millen, a psychology researcher at the University of Stirling, said hiding markers for facial recognition in eye movements is difficult, especially if you know that person well.”( 当他们看着一张熟悉的脸时,他们的眼睛在脸的内侧部位停留的次数仍然较少。
根据最后一段中的“She believes such knowledge could help investigators have a clearer understanding of who is connected to whom in a criminal case.”
