The Swedish island of Lidö is leading the way in carbon neutrality(中和), with the entire holiday island undergoing a transformation to reduce its environment impact and demonstrating the ease with which change can be brought about.
Dubbed Zero Island, the project has achieved an emissions cut of 78 per cent and achieved full carbon neutrality within 12 months.
A number of different companies collaborated to achieve the outcome.
Energy company Neste supplied renewable diesel(柴油). This diesel is made entirely of renewable waste and residues and has been packaged for transport on and to the island, to achieve a 70 per cent reduction in transport emissions.
Meanwhile Fortrum’s solar power park is helping to provide energy to the facilities and is now accounting for 25 per cent of its electricity needs. Houses and cabins were also fixed with curtains that regulate temperature and alternative heat pumps and air-conditioning. All measures combined reduced emissions from facilities by 94 per cent.
Meanwhile the tourism organizations on the island adopted 18 sustainable solutions, nine of which directly reduced emissions; the rest related to waste management, education, or extension of trip length for visitors on the island.
Most changes were made to existing facilities; however, a new cabin, called Nola or the Zero Cabin, has been built. It will let visitors eat from a Zero Menu, sourced from local ingredients with low carbon footprint. This menu reduces emissions by 74 per cent compared to the previous one. This and other changes, such as the use of bio-LPG in gas stoves, have brought about a 48 per cent reduction of emissions relating to food.
“Sweden’s climate plans are ambitious, but the clock is ticking,” Carl Nyberg, Neste’s Executive Vice President in Renewable Road Transportation, said.
“In the fight against climate change, we need all possible means. This includes new partnerships and the will to work towards a shared vision of decreasing emissions and developing sustainability.”
“The Zero Island project proves that if we work together as institutions, companies and individuals, we can change the world a lot quicker than we think.”

Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.
Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar. Students get winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than three thousand such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states.
But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said, "Year-round schools don't really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year."
Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.
But calling them "summer school" could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins, Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term summer school”. In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcomed other terms like "summer camp," "enrichment," "extra time" and "hands-on learning."
41. According to the first paragraph the summer learning gap ______.
A. helps children to gain weight.
B. affects children’s regular studies.
C. improves children’s memories.
D. leads children to work harder.
42. Compared to traditional schools, students in the year-round ones ______.
A. have generally the same number of class days.
B. have much less time for relaxation every year.
C. perform better and have more learning gains.
D. hold more classes with more free weeks off.
43. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Year-round schools can solve the problem of the learning gap.
B. Students from poor families often fall behind after the vacation.
C. There are schools in each state following a year-round calendar.
D. Nothing can help the students who fall behind after the vocation.
44. Why did almost all parents dislike the term “summer school”?
A. They can’t afford to the further study during vacation
B. They are worried about the quality of the “summer school”.
C. They want their children to be forced to make up the gap.
D. They cherish the children’s rights of freedom very much.
45. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Opening Summer Camps
B. Forbidding Summer Schools
C. Minding the Summer Learning Gap
D. Spreading Year-Round Education

History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi,a pharmacologist and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏). A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning, he couldn’t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the important experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.
Loewi’s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Nervous feelings are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.
Being able to take advantage of dreams for solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.
46. The main idea of this passage is that ______.
A. very little is really known about the meaning of dreams
B. it is possible to “catch” one’s dreams by planning before going to sleep
C. dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one’s problems
D. Loewi’s experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses
47. The first paragraph is mainly organized by ______.
A. classifying types of experiments
B. summarizing the work of one researcher
C. comparing and exploring historical cases
D. telling in time order about one man’s research
48. If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have ______.
A. asked someone else to do it
B. thought it was a bad idea
C. tried it out on his own
D. thought it was a wise idea
49. The author probably thinks that ______.
A. Loewi should not have conducted his experiment
B. dreaming is of very little value to most people
C. nervous feelings may stop someone thinking of useful ideas
D. college students should not try out dream experiments
50. The author seems to be in favor of ______ according to the passage.
A. seeking creative solutions
B. avoiding scientific experiments
C. nervous feelings before dreams
D. becoming a famous scientist
第II卷(非选择题 共25分)
第三部分:写作(共两节;满分25分)
第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Until recently, I hadn’t done much community service. In fact, I did nothing to benefit anyone but myself. My selfishness and laziness were clear before I received an assignment from my teacher. Each student was required to complete 10 hours community service. To me, 10 hours was a huge amount of time to spend helping others. Volunteering, for me, has been a truly life – changing experience.
My mom suggested that I organize a food drive(募捐活动)in our development(新建筑宅区)and donate what I collected to a local shelter. Anything that would help finish the project seemed like a good idea, so I agreed. I made up flyers(传单)asking for donations and placed flyers at every house in my neighborhood.
I was getting ready to fetch the cans from my neighbor’s yards on the day of the food drive when all of a sudden it started to pour. Rain flooded the roads and wind blew hard, but I was determined to complete my task. My mom drove me around our development and I jumped out at every house to collect items people had put out.
When we finally arrived at the shelter, I was a little nervous because I had never been there before. The woman in charge was extremely grateful for the donations and said that the world would be appreciating the food drive and delighted that my service to the community would make a difference in people’s lives.
From that point on, I made myself a promise that I would serve the community more often, even when it was not required. Through this school assignment, I have realized that caring for others is an important part of living and the world would be a completely different place if people all help those who are less fortunate.
51. Why did the author of this passage do the community service? (no more than 10 words)
52. How did the author’s mother help him to finish the service? (no more than 15 words)
53. The underlined word “pour” in Paragraph 3 may be replaced by ______. (1 word)
54. What did the woman in charge think of the author’s act? (no more than 10 words)
55. Do you want to care for others? Why? (no more than 20 words)
