    Step 3 Wrking ut the rules
    1. Learning abut Rule 1
    Students bserve the abve five sentence structures and infer what elements are essential in a sentence and deduce Rule 1: The subject and the verb are necessary parts f a sentence.
    2. Learning abut Rule 2
    Students bserve the fllwing tw sentences:
    • I agree.
    • Yu will have a happy life.
    T: The necessary parts f a sentence are the subject (S) and the verb (V) . “Agree” is an intransitive verb and it des nt take an bject. “Live” is a transitive verb and it takes “ a happy life” as the bject .In this way we can wrk ut Rule 2: A transitive verb is always fllwed by a(n) bject. Objects are usually nuns r prnuns.
    T: Cmplete the fllwing sentences with prper verbs r bjects.
    • During the three years f senir high schl, I acquired great knwledge and enjyed persnal grwth.
    • In rder t imprve my ftball skills, I will jin a ftball club.
    • T achieve my gal fr the new term, I will learn t play ftball. (t-infinitive serving as the bject)
    3. Learning abut Rule 3
    Students bserve the fllwing sentences:
    • Yu will live a happy life.
    • Setting gals gives yu a fcus in life.
    T: Sme transitive verbs can take tw bjects, the direct bject (DO) and the indirect bject (IO). The indirect bject usually refers t a persn and the direct bject a thing. Objects are usually nuns r prnuns.The sentence structure is like this: S+V+IO+DO. This is Rule 3.
    T: Setting gals gives yu a fcus in life. We can als change the structure int the fllwing: Setting gals gives a fcus t yu in life.
    T: Let’s have sme practice.
    (1) Brainstrming: What verbs have we learned that can take tw bjects?
    (2) Make sentences using S+V+IO+DO structure
    4. Learning abut Rule 4
    T: An bject can be fllwed by a cmplement and it is called bject cmplement (OC). The sentence structure is like this: S+V+O+OC. This is Rule 4: The bject cmplement adds mre infrmatin abut the bject.
    T: Please cmplete the fllwing sentences with prper bject cmplements
    • Mrs. Barrw named her dg Bluebell.
    • I wanted t paint my bedrm pink.
    • I smelled smething burning in the kitchen.
    • The terrible news f Kbe’s death left us in great shck.
    • I watched a magician perfrm a magic n TV.
    • Our principal encuraged us t fully realize ur ptential.

    Step 4 Mre explanatin
    1. Distinguish the S+V+O structure frm the S+V+P structure.
    (1) Underline the sentence elements in the fllwing sentences:
    • We shuld keep psitive in life. S+V+P
    • We shuld keep a psitive attitude t life. S+V+O
    • Achieving a balance between my study and hbbies remains a challenge. S+V+P
    (2) Make a summary.
    T: We divide verbs int three kinds: intransitive verbs (vi.), transitive verbs (vt.) and linking verbs (linking v.). The verbs in the abve sentences are shuld keep, shuld keep and remains.They each belng t the linking verb, the transitive verb and the linking verb.
    T: Linking verbs include be verbs and verbs like lk, sund, taste, smell, feel, get, becme, turn, stay, remain, keep etc. A wrd r a grup f wrds that fllws a linking verb is the predicative (P).
    T: Hw can we decide the verb in a sentence is a linking verb, a transitive r an intransitive verb? Here is my tip. Change the verb int be verb. If the sentence still makes sense, the verb is a linking verb.

    2. Explain the functins f adverbials.
    T: We can add an adverbial t each f the abve five sentence structures. We use an adverbial t shw when (adverbial f time), where (adverbial f place) r hw (adverbial f manner) an actin is dne.
    e.g. We carefully watched ur chemistry teacher d an experiment with tubes in the lab last week.
    T: Let’s practise. Please find the adverbials in the fllwing sentences.
    • [By setting gals] [nw], yu are deciding what yu want t achieve [in the future].
    • [T realize yur gal], yu need t have a gd plan, manage yur time [well] and pay attentin t details.
    • [When yu achieve a gal], yu see the result f yur hard wrk.

    Step 5 Applying the rules

    3. Crrect the grammar mistakes in the fllwing passage.
    Manage (Managing) time prperly is an imprtant way f leading a mre successful life. Yu will benefit (frm) the tips belw.
    Keep a diary. It may seem difficult t start. But sticking t it will als give (yu) the chance t see hw yu spend yur time.
    Make a t-d list. Smetimes yu feel caught between s many tasks. In this case, a t-d list may (be) helpful. Yu shuld als break big tasks int small actin steps. This makes difficult tasks easily (easy) t manage and cmplete.
    Use technlgy wisely. Just like yur gal f managing time, yu shuld als manage yur use f cmmunicatin tls well. The best way is (t) set aside sme time fr dealing with them. Yu shuld nt waste t much time n them.
    4. Write a shrt passage abut hw t achieve the gal fr the new term.
    T: What is yur gal fr the new term? Hw are yu ging t achieve yur gal? Write abut it using different sentence structures.
    Presentatin and evaluatin
    T: After yu have finished, I will invite sme f yu t share yur writings with us. Please evaluate the writings and see if the sentences are cmplete in structure.
