Before the 1830s,most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in America, usually $8 to $10 a year. Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that.
The trend, then, was toward the "penny paper"— a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.
This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible(but not easy)to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830,but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer's office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny—usually two or three cents was charged —and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase "penny paper " caught the public's fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny.
This new trend of newspapers for "the man on the street" did not begin well. Some of the early ventures(企业)were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.
5.Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?

    C
A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important. These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion(万亿)connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.
Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound patterns. Her researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern"A-B-B". Another order was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern"A-B-C". The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the "A-B-B" pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order.
Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is building blocks of words and grammar."Position is key to language," she says. "If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference:'John caught the bear.' is very different from ' The bear caught Jone’”
Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphones-no matter how educational-doesn't appear to be enough for children's brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who'd watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies learned nothing.
    9.What makes connections in a baby's brain?
    A.Having a higher IQ.
    B.Getting new information.
    C.The baby's early age.
    D.The connections with other babies.
Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between differe parts of the brain.
    10. What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the
    experiment?
    A.Babies identify different sound patterns.
B.Word order is relevant to meaning.
C.Babies can well understand different words.
D.A certain brain region processes language.
    【答案】.A
This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns.
    11. What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 3 ?
A.Grammar is important in learning languages.
    B.Different orders have different meanings.
    C.Different languages have different grammar.
    D.Words have different sounds
根据第三段的“If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference:'John caught the bear.' is very differ-ent from 'The bear caught John.'"可知,有些东西放在句首和句尾会有很大的不同,比如“John抓住了熊”和“熊抓住了John”意思是不一样的,由此可知单词位置对于语言来说很重要的,单词顺序不同,意思不同。

    D
Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers.
A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward.
Here's how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example.
After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of each combination.
When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it.
"This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains, "Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they're doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.”
    12. What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them?
    A. They fed them. B. They named them.
    C. They trained them. D. They measured them.
The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined定位至第二段,再根据第一句中的A team of researchers trained three Rhesus mon-keys可知答案为C项。
    13. How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment?
    A. By drawing a circle. B. By touching a screen.
    C. By watching videos. D. By mixing two drinks.

    14. What did Livingstone's team find about the monkeys?
    A. They could perform basic addition. B. They could understand simple words.
    C. They could memorize numbers easily. D. They could hold their attention for long.
    【答案】.A
根据第四段中 the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation可知,答案为A项(它们可以做基本的加法)。
    15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science.

Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question: "Should I jump? " This is what motivation or the lack of it can do. Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of the same coin. 16 Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.
17 More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal? First, you need to evaluate yourself, your values your strengths, your weaknesses, your achievements, your desires, etc. Only then should you set your goals.
You also need to judge the quality and depth of your motivation. This is quite important, because it is directly related to your commitment. There are times when your heart is not in your work. 18 So, slow down and think what you really want to do at that moment. Clarity(清晰)of thoughts can help you move forward.
Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths. Remember that goals are flexible. 19 They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals.
Your personal circumstances are equally important. For example, you may want to be a Pilot but can’t become one because your eyesight is not good enough. 20 You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal.
You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, some planned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation. Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals.
    A. This can affect your work.
    B. So how should you motivate yourself?
    C. However, this should not discourage you.
    D. So why should we try to set specific goals?
    E. They can change according to circumstances.
    F. Motivation is what you need most to do a good job.
    G. Without motivation, you can neither set a goal nor reach it.

Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of the same coin.(动机和目标的设定是一件事情的两个方面。) Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.

    18.【答案】.A
There are times when your heart is not in your work.(有时你的心会不在你的工作上。) 故选A。
Remember that goals are flexible.(要记得目标是灵活的。)
由设空处上句话中的you may want to be a pilot but can't become one because your eyesight is not good enough(你可能想成为一名飞行员,但因为你的视力不够好而不能成为一名飞行员)可知,接下来会告诉我们解决这个问题的办法。 You should reassess your goals(你应该重新评估你的目标)可知,选C项。

    Dear Jim,
I'm happy to receive your letter and know you're coming to China.
Of the two trips to the Yangtze River and Mount Tai, both are highly recommended.Personally, I prefer the tour along the Yangtze River, the longest river and one of the mother rivers of Chinese civilization, from which you can learn a lot about the history of China and Chinese people. Moreover, the scenery along the river is amazing, with many well-known sightseeing spots. That's why I think the trip along the Yangtze River will be a better choice.
I hope you'll have a good time in China.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread, 89cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. Where are they? Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets again, including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35. 00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside. re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
“Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women’s and the other not black.
