There was once a company in the USA that said it would offer a lot of money to anyone who
could find a white marigold (金盏花). Most marigolds are golden or brown. It is very hard to find
a white one.
Twenty years later, the company received a letter from an old woman. She sent 100 white
marigold seeds (种子) along with the letter.
The woman was a fan of flowers. When she first heard the company's notice 20 years ago, she
got very excited. She thought she could grow her own white marigolds. But her children doubted her.
She knew nothing about seeds' genes(基因), after all. So her dream of growing white marigolds was
just that - a dream.
Still, she worked to make it happen. She planted some common marigold seeds and took good
care of them. A year later, when the marigolds bloomed (开花), she chose one of the faintest (最
淡的) flowers and took is seeds. She planted these seeds and waited another year for them to bloom.
Day after day, year after year, her life changed. Her husband died, her children moved away,
and many other things happened. But she kept growing all the time.

Have you ever bought Genki Forest (元气森林) sparkling water
because it's advertised as "sugar – free"? The company recently apolo-
gized (道歉) for the wrong advertisement.
The company said the drinks are "sucrose – free"(零蔗糖), but
this is not the same as "sugar-free". Now the company has changed the
words "sugar-free" to "low sugar" on the bottles.
In fact, there are many kinds of sugar. Sucrose is just one of them. Other kinds of sugar, such as fructose(果糖) and sugar alcohol (糖醇), are still in Genki Forest drinks. These types of sugar are used
as sweeteners (甜味剂). They offer little energy, but a bit of them can make drinks taste sweet. That's why diet drinks like Genki Forest are popular among people who want to lose weight. They believe that they can not only enjoy sweet drinks, but also don't take in too much sugar.
However, studies find that the sweeteners might make people eat more. When you eat sweet-
tasting things, your brain knows it. Then your brain tells your body to prepare itself to take in energy. But since the diet soft drink has little energy, the brain will not receive what it is expecting. At this time, you will feel hungry and start getting energy by eating more food.
According to China Daily, drinking too many diet drinks might lead to obesity(肥胖) and type
2 diabetes(糖尿病). It's time for you to think twice about the diet drinks.
48. Why did Genki Forest recently apologize?
A. For not having any sugar in its drinks.
B. For advertising its drinks incorrectly.
C. For making too many advertisements.
D. For incorrectly spelling words on its advertisement.
49. What do we know about Genki Forest from Paragraph 3?
A. Its drinks taste sweeter than other drinks.
B. Its drinks have high levels of sucrose.
C. There are sweeteners in its drinks.
D. People can lose weight by drinking its drinks.
50. What do studies show about sweeteners?
A. They might make people feel hungrier.
B. They are used more in food than drinks.
C. They provide enough energy for those on a diet.
D. They cause the brain to stop receiving energy.
51. According to the last paragraph, drinking lots of diet drinks can be _________ .
A. fashionable B. strange C. enjoyable D. harmful
D
"It’s a waste of time, " I said when my mom told me to join Madcaps, a mothers and daughters
club that helps charities. When she told me I had to volunteer at a homeless shelter (收容所), I
thought that things could not get worse.
We got there late and walked to the dirty homeless shelter, where we saw a lady shouting at the
guard. He helped her solve the problem and then led us to the kitchen, where we ran into other five
Madcaps mothers and daughters.
Then homeless people started to walk in and a little girl, around 5 years old, walked up and
pointed to the food I was handing out. I handed her a cold sandwich and she nodded to say thanks.
She then walked over to her parents, who were seated at a large table.
As she walked away, I thought about how much I had. I went to one of the top schools in San
Diego, I had a great house by the water, and I had a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how
little she had. She probably didn’t go to school, and this is where she sleeps and eats every day. That
little girl made me realize just how lucky I am.
After that moment, I had a change of heart. Now, I love Madcaps and don’t miss one meeting.
I have got over being socially awkward (困难的) and now have many friends who I often play with.
I believe that if you have an open mind about things, you can learn a lot about yourself and the
people in your community. You can make new friends and realize just how lucky you are. I believe
you can make a difference just by doing something that you don't want to do.
52. What was the writer thinking in the underlined sentence in Paragraph One?
A. She was happy to volunteer. B. She wasn't sure what the club did.

53. What did the writer see in the kitchen when they arrived?
A. A lady was shouting at a guard.
B. The kitchen was full of homeless people.
C. Nobody was in the kitchen.
D. Five pairs of mothers and daughters had arrived.
