There were some children in the same school who were sick at the same time. They got infected(感染) with E.coli(大肠杆菌). They were very ill, but the doctors didn’t know what caused the infection. In order to make it clear, they called Dr. Richard Besser. They were sure he would find out the cause.

First. Dr. Besser carefully studied the E. coli that the children had. He looked at the E. coli’s DNA. The DNA showed that this kind of E. coli was dangerous to people. Dr. Besser knew this kind of E. coli could travel from animals to people. Perhaps the children had got close to animals that carried the E. coli.
