What will city life be like in the future? Some people think that life in the city is going to be horrible. They say that cities will become more and more crowded. As the number of people increases, there will be less space for each person. This overcrowding will cause other problems—more crimes, dirtier streets, and worse problems with traffic than we have now.How will people find enough drinking water, energy (such as gas and electricity),and housing?Because life will be hard, people who live in cities will worry more, and they may become sick. For these reasons, some people say that nobody will want to live in city areas.
How can we deal with such problems as overcrowding, crime, and traffic? In some cities, thousands of people are already sleeping in the streets because there is little suitable housing and because houses are too expensive. The crime rate isn’t going down.Instead,it is increasing so fast that many people are afraid to go out at night.Traffic is also getting worse.
More and more often, traffic jams are so bad that cars don’t move at all for several hours. These problems have been getting worse, not better,so many people see no hope for the future of the city.
Los Angeles,California, for example, has no subway system and buses are slow.Instead, many commuters drive many miles from their homes to work. Many of these drivers spend several hours each day on busy freeways.New York, however, has a big transit system, buses, commuter trains, and subways.Because the public transportation is crowded and dirty, many people drive private cars, and the traffic jams are worse than in Los Angeles.A taxi driver complains,“I was driving home, but in forty-five minutes I moved only two miles! Finally,I turned off the engine and just sat there.A lot of people left their cars where they were in the middle of the streets and went into a bar for a few beers!”
On the other hand, some cities have clean, fast and pleasant public transportation systems. In Paris and Toronto, for example, anyone can use buses or subways to move quickly from one part of the city to another.
1.What is the main problem of the future city life for some people?
A.Housing. B.Overcrowding.
C.Environmental pollution. D.Traffic jams.
由第一段第三句“They say that cities will become more and more crowded.”
2.The best way to solve the traffic problem in Los Angeles might be .
A.cutting down the number of private cars
B.getting more buses in the freeway
C.persuading people to live nearer to their workplaces
D.building a subway system
根据第四段第一、二句“Los Angeles,California, for example, has no subway system and buses are slow.Instead, many commuters drive many miles from their homes to work.”
3.According to the passage, has a better traffic condition.
A.New York B.Paris
C.London D.Tokyo
由文章最后一段“On the other hand, some cities have clean, fast and pleasant public transportation systems. In Paris and Toronto...”
B
In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas!You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!
Not all past predictions have been proven wrong.A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the Internet years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology,or whether people really needed it in their lives or not.Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.
Robot Helpers
Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere,of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon.Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working environments.Back in the 1950s,however,people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes. So why hasn’t it happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy. And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.
Telephones of tomorrow
In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet. Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious:people desire for privacy.Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower?Probably not—it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It’s not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination.Keep watching the news or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.
4.The passage mainly deals with .
A.predictions that can catch our imagination
B.predictions that haven’t come true
C.new technology can benefit our life
D.predictions that have come true
5.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
B.Predictions don’t need to consider people’s practical use of the technology.
C.Not all the high-tech things people thought we’d be using by now are widely used.
D.High-tech things are not always convenient to people’s life.
6.Robot Helpers haven’t been used in most people’s homes because .
A.using the kind of robots at home is simply a waste of time and money
B.the kind of robots hasn’t been developed yet
C.people find it difficult to control the kind of robots
D.the kind of robots won’t bring people practical use
由第三段中的“Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy. And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange.”
7.How does the writer like the flying car?
A.It is too difficult to imagine.
B.It is too crazy an idea to realize.
C.It is likely to appear in the future.
D.It has been the focus of the news.
由最后一段最后两句“But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination.Keep watching the news or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.”
