What d we think with? Only the brain? Hardly. The brain is like a telephne exchange. It is the switchbard, but nt the whle system. Its functin is t receive incming signals, making prper cnnectins and send messages thrugh t their destinatin. Fr efficient service, the bdy must functin as a whle. But where is the "mind"? Is it in the brain? Or perhaps in the nervus system? After all, can we say that the mind is in any particular place? It is nt like a thing; like a leg, r even the brain. It is a functin, an activity. Aristtle, 2,300 years ag, bserved that the mind was t the bdy what cutting was t the axe.
When the axe is nt in use, there is n cutting. S with the mind. "Mind", said Charles H. Wlbert, "is what the bdy is ding". If this activity is necessary fr thinking, it is als necessary fr carrying thught frm ne persn t anther. If yu have never dne this with great effrts, yu have a surprise in stre, fr gd cnversatinalists are almst cnstantly in mtin. Their heads are cntinuusly ndding and shaking smetimes s vigrusly (精神旺盛地) that yu wnder hw their necks can stand the strain (过劳). Even the legs and feet are active. As fr the hands and arms, they are seldm still fr mre than a few secnds at a time. These peple, remember, are nt making speeches. They are nly cmmn peple trying t make thers understand what they have in mind. They are nt cnscius f mvement. Their speech is nt studied. They are just human creatures in a human envirnment, trying t adapt themselves t a scial situatin. Yet they cnverse, nt nly with ral language, but with visible actins that invlve practically every muscle in the bdy. In shrt, because peple really think all ver, a speaker must talk all ver if he succeeds in making peple think.

T be sure, nly children experienced sme things differently frm thse with sisters and brthers. Many feel mre pressure t succeed. They als tend t lk nly t their parents as rle mdels in the absence f brthers and sisters.

Mst nly children, hwever, say they wish fr sisters r brthers nly when it cmes t caring fr aging, unhealthy parents. Britain's David Emersn, cauthr f the bk The Only Child, says that such a persn bears terrible burden in having t make all the decisins alne. Emersn knws frm experience: After his father died, he chse t mve his elderly mther frm their family hme, where she was vulnerable (易受攻击的) t huse breakers, t a new ne with mre security. "The mve was quite hard n her, and she might feel that I pushed her int it, "he says, "After all, I am left with that respnsibility."
In the future, mre and mre nly children will likely face similar chices. With wrking mthers increasing, many families are finding they simply dn't have the time, mney r energy t have mre than ne child. As nly children becme cmmn, perhaps the wrld will realize that the Charge made against them is unjust.
