The biggest threat t the cntinent cmes frm warming seas.Rbert Jhnsn，a scientist wh mnitrs Antarctica ice sheets，said，“The ice sheets in Antarctica are hundreds f metres thick.But nce warm cean waters start flwing underneath，the ice will begin thinning and culd break up very quickly.” Thinning ice sheets cause ice t break away frm the cntinent and t melt even faster.Escaping ice frm western Antarctica has already resulted in a 10% rise in glbal sea level in recent decades.
Jhnsn believes that internatinal actin t reduce glbal warming is required immediately r it may be t late.“Everything is cnnected—Antarctica may be a lng way away but it is an imprtant part f the Earth's system，” said Jhnsn.“It cntains 90% f the wrld's ice,70% f the wrld's fresh water and that is enugh，if it melts cmpletely，t raise sea levels by 63 metres.”
Even in a wrsecase situatin scientists dn't expect the ice t entirely disappear，but predict that，because f the melting ice sheets，average sea level rise will be arund 1.4 metres higher by the end f the century.
