In ur “stay psitive” culture, many parents nly see these times as a reasn t celebrate. They see it as an inevitable change, and prepare themselves fr the next challenge. But I culdn’t help feeling this.I didn’t want t bury my feeling f sadness.Thse wh prtect themselves frm these mments lse a great pprtunity f grwth. It is the kind f grwth that results frm pain, and makes us all mre a part f the human family.
Half an hur later,my sn returned t us,his eyes twinkling. He was excited t tell us abut his new experience. We listened t him,and his smiling face helped t ease the sadness. In fact,it was impssible nt t feel happy fr him.

Sitting acrss frm a German cuple and a Chinese mther and her child,we were waiting at the Guilin airprt fr ur delayed flight t Shanghai. In this last week f ur travelstudy tur,my husband and I were savring this shrt break by reading.
I tuned ut the languages I culdn’t understand. But it was an American accent that pulled my attentin frm my bk.It als pulled the attentin f three rws f peple seated arund us as the American barked,“Cming thrugh!Cming thrugh!”
At the same time,an versized man pulling an versized carryn passed ur rw.His wheeled bag caught the German’s feet.Turning t see what snagged his luggage, the American fellw yanked his bag s hard that it crssed ver the man’s feet.It was then that my hrrr struck. There was n “I’m srry”,n “Excuse me” and n “Pardn me” cming frm this cuntryman f mine.
While this wasn’t the first r last incident where I sighted discurteus, illmannered, rude Americans in China, each prduced similar feelings.First,I was embarrassed that smene frm my cuntry was creating a negative impressin f Americans. My secnd reactin was a desire t aplgize.I wanted them t explain t the Chinese wman and her child, the German cuple next t them, and everyne nearby that this was nt typical American behavir.I wanted them t knw “we” were all nt like that.
I never gt t explain,r t aplgize.Language differences made that ptin impssible, and ratinal thinking made it inapprpriate. And it turned ut nt t be a need. The German caught my eyes with a bit f headshaking, smiling and eye rlling, which I returned, and it was clear that he knew we were Americans and was expressing that there was “n need” t aplgize fr “universal idit behavir”.
