Public schls in the New Yrk,America’s biggest city,cmmnly have numbers fr names.But this is unusual.In the United States,the prcess f naming a schl ften invlves parents and the cmmunity as well as elected schl leaders.Researchers say schl names can shw civic values and als shape them.Fr example,naming a schl after a histric persn becmes a way t teach students abut that persn’s imprtance in histry.
A new study examines the naming f American public schls.The study is frm the Manhattan Institute,an rganizatin that des public plicy research.The study shws that fewer and fewer schls are being named after peple.Instead,mre schls are being named after the lcal area r natural features like hills,trees r animals.
The researchers say these changes raise questins abut the civic duty f public educatin.They lked at seven states with twenty percent f all public schl students in the cuntry.They fund similar results in every state:new schls are less likely t be named after peple.This is true especially with presidents.Fr example,in Arizna,public schls in the past twenty years were almst fifty times mre likely t be named after such things as landfrms r plants.
Schl fficials say they try t chse names that will nt ffend anyne.Fr example,a few years ag,the city f New Orleans banned the naming f any schl after a persn wh wned slaves.Other schl systems have rules against naming new schls after any persn,living r dead.
