    A
One evening I noticed a young woman in a bar. She was different from other customers who passed her by. Some didn't see her because she wasn't fit in the “bar scene” and others because her physical condition made her different—she was born with a disability—her left leg was shorter than the right when she walked.
It was the “difference” that drew me to her. The woman didn't feel embarrassed. Instead, she was selfconfident and full of life. Have you ever seen a person who just looked as though he knew something that you didn't know? Well, that was exactly how she looked as she smiled from the moment she went to her table to the moment she left. How did she own this quality while other customers did not?
Other customers drank and talked about the trouble they met... she did not. Other customers complained about the “unfair” life... she did not. Other customers found courage in a bottle... she did not. There was no dancing for her. However, she saw obvious value and pleasure in just being there.
This woman showed such appreciation, confidence and consideration at the moment. Faced with great adversity—her disability, this young woman clearly did better not worse; faced with her tragedy(悲剧), she realized that she needed to make a decision to be better, and not worse, while so called “normal” people can't even see the existence of other choices.
Whatever the ease may be, don't miss the wonderful gift that this young woman has given to me and also given you: you have a choice to find pleasure in every moment and to move towards a purpose that provides you with satisfaction.
56.What attracted the author's attention in the bar?
    A.A beautiful young woman.
    B.The disability of a woman.

D.The poor performance of a customer.

    A.has a good, unique quality
    B.was easier to get attention
    C.wasn't so talkative and outgoing
D.had few chances to perform herself
答案:A 事实细节题。根据第二段第四句“Have you ever seen a person... while other customers did not?”可知,这个年轻女人拥有别人不具备的品质,即拥有独特的品质。故选A。
58.What does the underlined word “adversity” mean?

    C.Misfortune. D.Challenge.

A.The life is fair to everyone.
    B.Don't complain about life.
C.People can find pleasure through improving the quality.
D.People need to understand how to find pleasure.

    B
When other nineyearold kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks to win a highly competitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard:The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.
Liz Murray, a 22yearold American girl, has been writing a reallife story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drugaddicted parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.
Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. “What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,” she wrote in her book Breaking Night.
She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that “next to nothing could hold me down”. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.”
Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is “as simple as making a decision”.

Credit cards let people buy things now and pay for them over months or even years. But some people get deep into debt. And critics say some banks have terms and charges that can make it harder for people to pay off that debt. In the United States, there are calls for stronger government supervision of the credit card industry. Credit cards have been heavily marketed through the mail and at stores. They offer economic power at a price. In 2004, Americans had about $800 billion in credit card debt. Now they owe about $968 billion.
Critics say banks made it very easy to get credit cards. But that may be changing. The crisis in the housing and credit markets is beginning to affect the credit card industry. More payments are late. Charges for late payments are a growing source of profit for banks. But late payments can also signal bad debts.
The central bank, the Federal Reserve, says twothirds of American banks have recently reported tighter lending requirements. Many people report having their credit limits reduced without warning.
Some lawmakers are concerned that cardholders do not have enough protection from what critics say are abusive policies. These include actions like raising interest rates because of an unrelated event. Also, banks may raise the chances of a late payment by changing monthly payment dates for credit cards.
According to a survey, 82% of Americans think credit cards provide a valuable service. But a majority, 58%, say they do not trust credit card companies. And three out of four think the government should regulate the industry more closely. Three out of four people feel there is always some condition that makes a card less appealing than the company made it sound. And a little more than half say they have had a card that was not as good as they expected. But close to 80% say no one really reads the terms and conditions when they sign up for a credit card.

D.The majority of Americans don't think much of credit cards.
答案:B 推理判断题。根据文章的最后一句“But close to 80% say no one really reads the terms and conditions when they sign up for a credit card.”可知人们在申请信用卡时应该更加小心。故选B。
71.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Credit cards are still very well received in America.
B.Credit cards don't live up to some people's expectations.
C.Many people don't believe in credit card companies.
D.The results of a survey about credit cards in America.
    答案:D 段落大意题。这一段的开头提到了“According to a survey”,接着列举了几个数据及相关信息,因此我们可以总结最后一段的内容是关于美国信用卡调查结果的。故D项符合文章最后一段的段落大意。

Science fiction writers create imaginary worlds. The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So it's important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation. For example, if you're writing about human living on a planet with zero gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body.
Then you have to figure out the exact rules of your imaginary worlds. And you have to follow them. If humans are able to breathe underwater in Chapter 1, your character can't drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. The issue here is maintaining your readers' trust. That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you. If you start out with an ordinary detective novel and then throw in someone breathing underwater in the 6th chapter, you will pull the readers out of their imagination. The same thing happens if you change the rules halfway.
Part of your preparation work for the novel is to map out its worlds in great detail. You should decide the following issues: the history of the world, the geography, what possibilities it offers, how everything works in this new reality, and how all of these factors affect the way your characters think, feel, and react to things. You don't have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have to let readers know enough to understand what's going on. This also allows you to work out logical problems and contradictions before you start writing.
When you are writing, remember to make it feet real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it's like. Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like they're actually there.

    答案:
    Dear Liu Hua,
I learn that you prefer to work directly after high school rather than go to college. But I don't think it is a wise choice in a long term.
Actually, universities can offer various opportunities which you can take advantage of. Once being there, you can meet with people who share the same interests and build up relationships with them. Last but not least, you can also learn some important skills and improve personal abilities, develop selfconfidence, and figure out what you want to be and can do in the future there.
In my opinion, what we can learn and experience in university will be the best treasure of our life.
    Best wishes,
    Li Ming
