Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7,1885,as the son of Christian Bohr,Professor of Physiology at Copenhagen University, and his wife Ellen.Niels, together with his younger brother Harald, grew up in an atmosphere most favorable to the development of his gift—his father was a great physiologist, who encouraged his interest in physics while he was still at school, and his mother came from a family successful in the field of education.
In 1903,Bohr entered Copenhagen University where he came under the guidance of Professor C.Christiansen,a highly gifted physicist, and gained his master’s degree in physics in 1909 and two years later his doctorate.
While still a student, the announcement by the Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen of a prize to be awarded for the solution to a certain scientific problem, caused him to conduct an experimental and theoretical investigation of surface tension (表面张力).This work, which he carried out in his father’s laboratory and for which he received the prize offered (a gold medal),was published in the Transactions of the Royal Society in 1908.
In the autumn of 1911 he went to Cambridge University, where he profited by following the experimental work going on in the Cavendish Laboratory under Sir J.J.Thomson’s guidance. In 19131914 Bohr held a lectureship in physics at Copenhagen University and in 19141916 a similar appointment at the Victoria University in Manchester. In 1916 he was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University, and from 1920 (until his death in 1962) he was the head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, established for him at that university.
During WWⅡ,Bohr escaped to Sweden and spent the last two years of the war in England and America, where he became associated with the Atomic Energy Project. In his later years,he devoted his work to the peaceful application of atomic physics and to political problems resulting from the development of atomic weapons. In particular,he recommended a development towards full openness between nations. His views were especially explained in his Open Letter to the United Nations on June 9,1950.
56.Being interested in physics in his childhood,Bohr________.
A.was greatly influenced by his family
    B.always visited his father’s lab

“Doctor, how long has he got?” A father and a daughter were sitting side by side in the consulting room. The father’s cancer had developed so quickly despite an operation that he could hardly eat anything. The doctor explained,“It is a very serious disease, and the chance of other treatments working is small.Your father’s life can only now be measured in months.” No sooner had the words come out than a crying voice piped up,“I didn’t want to know that.”
Dr Pauline Leonard looks back on the story in horror. The entirely true answer she gave to the man’s daughter was sincere, honest—and wrong.
“I felt awful,” she says.“I should have checked with him first.I should have asked him,‘Is that the sort of thing you want to hear?’ No doctor can say for sure how long a patient has to live, but we should make sure that is what they want to know.”
It’s true that there is no good way to give bad news. But a training program in communication for cancer doctors has shown that there are many lessbad ways. Not all cancer doctors were enthusiastic about the training.Dr Leonard said,“Some saw the course simply as what psychologists did. Then they realized there was quite a skill to it,and that they could actually reduce their own stress as well as help their patients.Doctors are afraid of dealing with angry, tearful patients and their relatives.Sometimes the relatives are more difficult than the patients.Usually, they are angry because of what they see as a late diagnosis (诊断)”.
The complexities (复杂性) of the doctorpatient relationship at the end of life challenge even the most experienced doctors.Wellmeaning attempts to shield patients from the truth can be just as harmful as telling them there is no medical cure.
60.According to the first paragraph, the father________.

62.What can we learn about the training program from the passage?
A.It was led by Dr Pauline Leonard.
B.Cancer doctors could benefit from it.
C.It included tips on how to talk with a doctor.
D.All cancer doctors were quite interested in it.
63.The underlined word “shield” in the last paragraph is similar in meaning to________.
    A.require B.encourage C.stop D.protect

Three quarters of Britain’s parents are too busy to read bedtime stories to their children, according to a study. The study was carried out by CITV to start their new children’s show Bookaboo, which is designed to encourage anyone to pick up a book and read with their children at any time of the day.
Worryingly, the study showed that only three percent of fathers now find the time to read to the kids compared to 89 percent of mothers.Lucy Goodman, creator of Bookaboo, said,“It’s important for young boys to be able to share a book with dads, granddads or male carers and it can be fun and rewarding, too.” Of the dads who said they didn’t read to their kids,87 percent blamed work while more than a third said they were too tired. While 89 percent of mums said they did read to their children, more than half of them said cleaning distracted (使分心) them and 49 percent were distracted by other household things.
Researchers also found parents are now relying heavily on other people to lend a hand with reading to their children with grandparents doing the most, followed by sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles. While 95 percent of parents read to their children at some point, only five percent read to their children during the day.More than one in ten said they read every couple of weeks or less, and five percent could not remember the last time they shared a book.
The study found parents also seem content with allowing their children to immerse (使沉浸) themselves in TV programs or playing computer games rather than reading.
Exgoalkeeper David Seaman, who is a dad of two,has been a guest in Bookaboo. He says,“I think it’s important that fathers do read to their children because it’s a special time.Sometimes my two children will come to listen to the same book—it’s a magical moment and I advise fathers just to try it.”

Office workers should know that long periods of sitting at your desk may be a killer.Scientists have shown a new threat from this lifestyle that they call “muscular inactivity (肌肉迟钝)”.
Sitting still for long periods of time leads to the buildup of substances (物质) in the blood that are harmful to health. And exercise alone won’t drive them away.
Millions of people spend their days between car, office desk and the sofa in front of the TV.While the bad influences are well rocognized,it has been thought that they can be changed by regular trips to the gym or swimming pool.
Now researchers say that is not enough. In addition to regular exercise, office workers need to keep moving while they work,by making regular trips to the printer, coffee machine or to chat with workmates.
Elin EkblomBak,an expert on health, says research shows long periods of sitting and lack (缺乏) of “whole body muscular movement” are strongly linked to obesity, heart disease and cancer, and a higher risk of death, regardless of (不管) whether they take enough exercise.
“Everyone knows about the health benefits of regular exercise. But what we haven’t realized before is that longperiod sitting down carries an extra risk that cannot be dealt with by taking exercise,” Dr EkblomBak said, adding that sitting still should be recognized as a risk to health.
“It is important to have a fiveminute break from desk work every 45 minutes.Don’t email workmates—walk across the office to give them the message.Take a coffee break or put the printer in the next room.I am a desk worker and I try to do it.It is not difficult but sometimes you get lost in your work and you forget about it.”
However, more studies are needed to confirm the ill effects of sitting for too long and ways of fighting them. But at present they conclude that “keep moving” should be added to the advice to “keep exercising.”
68.Nowadays,many office workers wrongly think that________.
A.long periods of sitting has bad influences on them
B.regular exercise benefits them after long periods of sitting
C.they are living a lifestyle called “muscular inactivity”
D.it’s unfair for them to sit in the office for too long

A.Chat with workmates often. B.Send emails instead of chatting.
C.Keep moving in the office regularly. D.Take more exercise after work.
70.From the text,it can be inferred that________.
A.regular exercise can drive away all the harmful substances in the blood
B.enough exercise could prevent office workers’ obesity and any other diseases
C.sitting still for long periods of time easily leads to “muscular inactivity”
D.harmful substances will come into the heart of people who sit still for long periods of time
71.What would be the best title for the passage?
    A.A new threat:longperiod sitting
    B.Office workers should keep exercising
    C.Taking exercise benefits a lot
D.Keep moving,it could save your life

Albert Einstein had a great effect on science and history, and his achievement was even greater than only a few other great scientists have achieved. An American university president once said that Einstein had made a new outlook,a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity (特性) of time and space and so on—but even ordinary man now understand that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.
By 1914 young Einstein had been worldfamous. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Russian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited chances for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by World War Ⅰ.
Einstein hated fighting and killing. The great suffering of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research and violin.Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.
In the year following World War Ⅰ honors were increasingly put on him.He became head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. But he himself refused the effort to put him in a position far above other people. He was well known for his humble (谦逊的) manner. He often said that his success would certainly have been achieved by others if he had never lived.
In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Nazism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.

    A.received worldwide praise
    B.had no chances for study
C.almost did nothing in his office
    D.still continued his scientific research

Diversity means the differences between things or people;the variety makes us unique.
People have a great deal of diversity.Even though our basic body structure is the same (head, eyes, heart, arms, legs, feet, etc.),our physical characteristics are different. For instance, the color of our skin, hair, and eyes are different. Also, our height and shape provide some diversity too.Even our fingerprints are unique and different.
People have to develop their own thoughts, opinions, feelings, and ideas about different topics and beliefs. We are influenced by different people, places, and experiences in our lives which may influence us when we have to make a decision.A person has to keep openminded when developing an opinion.Gathering information is also crucial (决定性的) to make a decision. The more you know about a topic, the easier it will be to make a good decision. As people grow up,they may even change their previous opinions and have new ideas.
Every person has unique talents, characteristics, and challenges to share with the world. Some people are good at reading and writing.Other people are talented at art and music. Some people are good at working with numbers or science.Others are talented by sharing their creativity. Some people have challenges to work with like being deaf, blind,or learning differently than others. It is important to remember that no matter what a person is good at or struggles with,we are all special in our own way.
When we are used to other people’s differences,we are showing respect. And we can find that we belong to the world and can give any thing a reason throughout the world. We can learn about a variety of cultures, places, and different ways to look at the world.

    Text 10
Now let me tell you something about my family. My family is very important to me.We have five members, including my parents,my sister,me and a clever cat.Whenever I have problems or feel discouraged,I think that my family is forever the best place for me to take a rest.I know whatever I have done, they would support me.My parents both work in the same middle school.Though they are very busy, they often help me with my lessons, with which I’m getting on quite well in my class. They spend more time teaching me how to be a good man. They are not only my parents, but also my friends.I exchange my secrets and share my happy experiences with them.Unlike other teenagers,I like to chat with them.My younger sister is very smart.Besides, whatever she says makes me laugh.I love every minute to be with her.
