George Banks was a clever journalist. He worked for a good newspaper, and he liked arguing very much. He argued with anybody, and about anything. Sometimes the people whom he argued with were as clever as he was, but often they were not.

He did not mind arguing with stupid people at all: he knew that he could never persuade them to agree, because they could never really understand what he was saying, and the stupider they were, the surer they were that they were right; but he often found that stupid people said very amusing things.

At the end of one argument which George had with one of these less clever people, the man said something which George has always remembered and which has always amused him. It was, “Well, Sir, you should never forget this: there are always three answers to every question: you answer, my answer, and the correct answer.”

    46. It seemed to George as if ________.

    A. it was more interesting to argue with as clever people as he was

    A. he wanted to win the arguments

    B. he wanted to make the arguments more heated

There were many beautiful buildings in ancient Rome, but the living conditions for ordinary people were bad. Most of their homes were so poorly made that they fell down or were fire hazards (=danger) with their steep, narrow wooden stairways. Most people were packed into apartment buildings that rose shakily (=unsafely) six to twelve floors above the ground. The apartments were rooms about three metres square, and each building housed about five hundred people.

These tall buildings faced each other across streets only three metres wide, so no sunlight reached the ground. Even so, apartments were costly, though cheaper places could be had outside Rome. But people wanted to be near their work and entertainment. So the streets became crowded and it was hard to move quickly. At night, the streets were filled with noise as food and supplies were brought into the city on wagons and carts.

    50. In ancient Rome, most people lived in ________ apartments.

    A. small and crowded B. clean and tidy

    C. spacious and sunny D. tall and big

    51. The streets in ancient Rome were ________.

    A. crowded and noisy B. wide and bright

    C. narrow and dark D. both A and C

    52. People liked to live in Rome Because________.

    A. the apartments were comfortable

    B. the living expenses were low

    C. they have no money to build houses outside the city

    D. they wanted to enjoy the conveniences of the city

    53. This passage is mainly about ________ in ancient Rome.

    A. the beautiful buildings

    B. the living conditions of ordinary people

    C. the streets and transportation

    D. the food and daily supplies

    第二节  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项

TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea leavel, Salt water is already entering the country’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. 54___________

55______. Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark’s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year, Nowadays, it happens more that 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川)melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 1025 cm in the last 100 years.

56______. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. 58_______.

57________, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with “climate refugees” looking for somewhere to live.

    A. The main cause of global warming is human pollution

    B. Should this come true

    C. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered.

    D. But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea

    E. The sea level could rise by one meter this century

    F. people face a lot of pollution

    G. much has been done about our planet

    IV  短文改错:

Last night when Steven and I was having a walk in the street, we suddenly heard a painful cry for help under a tree nearby. We quickly ran to the tree and found a boy laying on the ground with a stick in his leg. He had fallen of the tree. Steven suggested we pulled the stick out at once, but I disagreed, Because I had learned little about first aid at school. The stick in the leg would help controlling the bleeding. As there was no telephone,we managed to find a taxi. We took the boy to the hospital. The doctors examined the boy fast and we got to know where the boy lived. So we telephoned his parents and left after he came to the hospital. We did a good deed.

    参考范文:

    Learn to protect our eyes

Everyone understands the importance of protecting our eyes, with which we can admire the beautiful world. But now more and more students are getting near-sighted. Therefore , how to protect the eyes has become a question we have to pay special attention to. Here is some useful advice on how to protect our eyesight.

Firstly, we should not keep our eyes working for a long time. When we are reading , keep the book about a foot away from our eyes. After reading for an hour or two, we’d better have a rest by looking into the distance. Secondly, we should remember not to read in the dim light or in the sun. Don’t read in a moving bus or in bed. Do eye-exercise every day, which will help us to keep good eyesight.

Above all, good reading habits help us to keep good eyesight. We must follow the above instructions.
