Gray wlves help keep Nrth America’s deer ppulatins in cntrl, by ding s, it
prvides an added benefit fr peple: curbing deer-vehicle crashes. In Wiscnsin cunties where
wlf ppulatins returned, the number f such crashes drpped in each area by 24 percent n
average, scientists reprt nline May 24
th
in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f
Sciences.
Ecnmist Jennifer Raynr f Wesleyan University analyzed data n wlf ppulatins, deer
ppulatins and deer-vehicle crashes fr 63 cunties in Wiscnsin frm 1988 t 2010. In the 29
cunties that had wlves, the predatrs (天敌) thinning deer ppulatins cntributed abut a 6
percent reductin in deer-vehicle crashes. The rest f the decrease, the team prpses, was due t
the wlves’ presence near rads, which they use as travel crridrs (通道), creating a s-called
“landscape f fear” that keeps deer away. That suggests that hunters wuldn’t prduce the same
impact as wlves by simply killing the same number f deer, the researchers say.
The average drp f 38 deer-vehicle crashes per year in cunties with wlves brings abut
$10.9 millin in savings each year acrss the state, the team fund. Fr cmparisn, the state
paid abut $3 millin ver the last 35 years t pay fr wlf damages. There may be ther
ecnmic benefits nt measured by the study such as reductins in damage t agriculture by deer,
says Raynr.
“The mst interesting thing t me abut chsing Wiscnsin as a case study is that this is a
human-dminated (人类主导 ) landscape,” Raynr says. Similar analyses culd guide
management decisins where wlf habitats c-exist with heavily ppulated areas, such as in the
nrtheastern United States, she said.
28. What des the underlined wrd “curbing” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Causing.
B. Checking.
C. Cntrlling.

B. Wlves eating deer is the main cause f the reductin.
C. Deer are afraid f wlves’presence.
D. Hunters play a leading rle in the reductin.
30. Why des Raynr chse Wiscnsin as a case study?
A. Because the landscape there is interesting and beautiful.
B. Because human and animals stay in harmny with each ther.
C. Because there are many wlf habitats in areas where peple live.
D. Because she culd affect management decisins f the gvernment.
31. Hw des the authr prve his pint f view?

“We are running ut f space and the nly places t g t are ther Spreading ut

send humans there. “Either we spread Earth t ther planets, r we risk ging extinct,” SpaceX
funder Eln Musk said at a cnference in 2013.
But nt everyne agrees that clnizing Mars r any ther planet is such a great plan. The
mst cmmn argument against ging is that it’s just t expensive r dangerus. It will take
huge amunts f mney and ther resurces just t get peple there, let alne set up a place fr
them t live. It’s nt even clear if humans culd survive n Mars.
Maybe all the time and mney peple wuld pur int a Mars missin wuld be better
spent n mre urgent prjects here n Earth, like dealing with pverty r climate change. Sme
experts argue that handling a prblem like an asterid strike r disease utbreak while staying
here n Earth wuld be much easier and less expensive than surviving n a new planet.
In additin, mving t a new planet culd harm r destry anything that already lives there.
Human visitrs change r damage the Martian envirnment. Sme feel that’s t much f a risk
t take.
32. What is Stephen Hawking’s view accrding t paragraph 1?

B. Humans are using up natural resurces n Earth.
C. It is necessary t spread ut t ther planets.
