8A Unit 2 School lifePeriod 2 Reading (1)I. Analysis of the teaching material1. Brief introduction of the teaching material: The teaching material which I’m going to talk about is Period 2 Reading of Unit 2 in 8A, Oxford English. The lesson is about the school lives in a British school and an American school. From this lesson, students can get some ideas about schools around the world and can make comparisons between different schools after they read about schools in both Britain and America. The purpose of this lesson is to develop the students’ basic reading skills – skimming and scanning. Try to look for the main points and key words to help students remember and understand every passage better. In this lesson, I will lead my students to identify specific information about school life. And my students are expected to be able to organize ideas to write an article about an ideal school. Meanwhile, I think moral education should also be carried out properly. 2. Teaching aims and demands:According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, I think the teaching aims are the following:1) Aims of knowledge:★ To make the students master some useful words such as mixed, together, subject, tasty, softball, practice, buddy, hero…★ To make the students master the following phrases and sentence patterns: in Year 8=in Grade 8,a mixed school, Home Economics, cook healthy and tasty meals, as well, take a bus, twice a week, have a great time doing sth…★ Try to talk about their ideal schools. 2) Aims of abilities:★ To improve students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing.★ To develop students’ abilities of talking about their school lives using the useful words and expressions learned in this lesson. 3) Aims of emotion:★ To make the students have good cooperation and self-confidence.★ To carry out moral education properly and make the students have active attitudes towards their school lives and study. We should let students know no matter which school they are in, they should study hard. If they don’t, they won’t achieve success. 3. Teaching focus and difficulties:1) Teaching focus:★ Some useful words and expressions mentioned in knowledge objects.★ Catch the main ideas about different school lives in a British school and an American school. 2) Teaching difficulties:★ To use their own language to describe their school lives. II. Analysis of the studentsMy students are about 13 or 14 years of age. They are curious, active and enjoy learning in the exciting, interesting and relaxing atmosphere. On the other hand, they’re too young to notice the contents long enough. They easily lose confidence in face of difficulties. So suitable tasks are very important. The teaching activities should be interesting and within their abilities and the introductions should be given step by step. III. Teaching methods1. Student-centered1) Students are the masters of study. They are always the center of study. ★ Place myself at the position of my students★ Base my teaching on the majority of the students★ Start from the students’ levels and experiences★ Give the students most of the time to practice ★ Be relative to students’ life, interests and needs. For junior students, I think interests are half success. 2) Teachers are just the organizers, researchers and directors, like the coach in a sports team. When students are engaged in activities, teachers can join them, giving the suggestions, offering the help they need and encouraging them timely. 2. Task-based teachingTask-based Teaching Method puts an emphasis on learning how to communicate through interaction in the target language. English can only be learned by practice. The tasks should be meaningful and within the students’ abilities. Only in this way can we really make our students active learners. 3. Necessary teaching aidsMulti-media and a tape recorder IV. Learning methods★ Individual and group work. ★ Learn to talk about the ideal school life through interaction in the target language.V. Teaching proceduresStepsTeacher’s ActivitiesStudents’ ActivitiesPurposesStep 1 GreetingsGreetingsGreetingsEnliven the atmosphere.Step 2Lead-ina) Present some pictures about my school.b) Teach some new words and phrases about school lives by talking about students’ school lives. Learn some new words and phrases about school lives. (Task 1)a) Learn from the known to the unknown.b) Enlarge students’ vocabulary.Vocabulary teaching is quite necessary and important. When we teach new words, it seems that merely presenting learners with a list of words, giving one or two examples of their use and asking them to learn them is not enough. They should be presented frequently in a variety of spoken and written contexts for a period after they are first learned.Step 3 Free talk Ask students some questions about their school lives. Talk about their school lives by answering the teacher’s questions. (Task 2)Develop the students’ speaking ability. Step 4SkimmingAsk students to read the two articles about American school life and British school life quickly and ask two questions.Read the articles quickly and answer the questions(Task 3)Develop the students’ ability of grasping the general idea of a passage in a short time by skimming. Step 5Scanning a) Play the tape for the students and ask students to read the articles again and get the students to do some T/F judgments.b) Check the answers.a)Read carefully again while listening to the recorder.(Task 4)b) Do some T/F judgments.(Task 5) a) Develop the students’ reading ability.b) Get students to understand the articles better.Step 6Consolidation a) Show a form about John’s school life and Nancy’s school life and ask students to fill in the form.b) Check the answer.c) Get the students to try to retell the articles with the help of the information in the form and the sentence patterns given by the teacher.a) Fill in the form.(Task 6)b) Retell the articles.(Task 7) Consolidation of the American school life and British school life.Step 7Discussion a) Show the students some questions about their ideal school lives.b) Ask them to talk about their ideal school lives in groups of four. Give help as much as possible.c) Give as much encouraging praise as possible.Students talk about their ideal school lives in front of the class.(Task 8)a) Pave the way for their own describing b) Foster the students’ ability in applying language.Everybody likes success. Success in the language will breed a positive attitude, which in turn will make further success likely. So words of praise such as “Good ”“Great ”“Well done”“Excellent” “A clever boy/girl”should be often said in class. The more the students are affirmed, the more active they’ll be. However, I think praise should be suitable. We teachers can’t praise just for praise. What’s more, errors are normal in spoken language and should be accepted when learners practice using the language.Step 8 Summary Give a summary about school life.Understand what they learned clearly today.Get students to have active attitudes towards their school lives and study. VI. HomeworkRead the two passages and choose one to recite. Please write something about your ideal school life. (At least 60 words)If possible, you can make a poster about your ideal school life.VII. Blackboard design Unit 2 School life mixed subjects Home Economics sew tasty practice … VIII. A summary after teaching:I think the aims of this period have been mainly achieved. In order to enliven the atmosphere of the class and relieve the students’ nervous feelings, I kept smiling to my students and tried to make my spoken language clear, gentle and easy to follow. The students were so clever that they did the practice step by step in the expected way. At last, when the students were asked to talk about their ideal schools, they were all excited and put up their hands. I think the students were highly motivated and the teaching tasks were accomplished successfully.
