The number f peple wh were killed r badly injured in the quake was mre than 4000,000.Nearly everything in the city was destryed.
Sldiers and medical wrkers came t help the peple wh had had great lss and t try and find survivrs.With strng supprt frm the gvernment and the tireless effrts f the city’s peple, a new Tangshan was built upn the earthquake ruins.

Fr several days, strange things ccurred in the cuntryside f nrtheastern Hebei. Then, n 28 July 1976, an earthquake hit Tangshan city. The city was greatly affected and nearly destryed. Brave dg wasn’t always his name. In the beginning he was just Stray (流浪的) Dg.I saw him fr the first time ne evening when Mattie and I went t milk the cws. The dg was dirty and thin, hardly wrth a secnd lk. He barked (吠叫) at us. But Mattie went straight twards him, reaching ut t pet him, saying, “What a pretty dg!”The dg lked unsure, as if he weren’t used t being spken t kindly. “Keep away frm that stray dg,” I tld Mattie.“Dn’t call him Stray Dg,” said Mattie. “He’s a pretty dg.” “Yu dn’t call by dgs pretty,” I laughed at Mattie.“I’m keeping him and I’m calling him Pretty Dg,” she threw back at me.T Mattie, he was Pretty Dg. T me, he was Stray Dg. I did everything I culd t chase (追赶) him away. But Stray Dg kept cming back.Of curse, Mattie did everything she culd t make sure f that. She talked t him, played with him, and fed him.
He fllwed her like a shadw (影子).I had a kind heart, but I had n interest in dgs, especially stray nes. But when winter came, smething happened that changed my mind. One cld day, Dad set ff t g ice fishing. I’d have gne with him, but I was busy wrking n a schl prject. Mattie had asked t g, but Dad said n. “Yu wn’t stand the cld,” he said. “I want t d sme serius fishing.”Dad came hme a few hurs later. “Gt me sme fine nes,” he shuted. “Cme see!”Ma came frm upstairs where she was painting a bedrm. I came frm the parlr (客厅) where I had my prject spread ut.“Where’s Mattie?” Dad asked.I lked at Ma. “I thught she was helping yu paint,” I said.Ma lked at me. “I thught she was helping yu with yur prject,” she said. She turned t Dad with trubled eyes. “Maybe she went lking fr yu.”“She never came t the lake,” Dad said. Wrry shwed n his face. “Cme n, we’ve gt t find her.”

And I fund Mattie under a fallen tree.” “We tk the wrng rad,” Mattie said. “I tried t get t the right ne thrugh the trees. Then I fell and hurt my ft s I culdn’t walk. Pretty Dg stayed with me.” I dn’t remember which ne f us started calling him Brave Dg, but that was his name frm then n. He became as much a member f the family as any f us were.
