The Palace Museum,knwn as the Frbidden City,was the imperial(帝王的)palace f the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the early 15th century,large-size cnstructin caused 100,000 cmmn peple t lead a hard life. The cnstructin tk 14 years and was finished in 1420.In the fllwing year,the capital f Ming Dynasty was mved frm Nanjing t Beijing. Twenty-fur emperrs f the Ming and Qing Dynasties ruled frm the Frbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911,but Emperr Puyi still lived in the inner curt. It was nt until 1925 that the cmplex buildings were changed int a museum. Since then,the Palace has been pened t the public.
The Palace Museum is rectangular(长方形)in shape,abut 960 meters lng frm nrth t suth and 750 meters wide frm west t east. There is a 10-meter-high wall,encircled by a 52-meter-wide mat(护城河).In the Ming Dynasty,the wd needed fr the building was brught mstly frm Sichuan and Hunan Prvinces,while in the Qing Dynasty,it was cut frm the nrtheast f China. Mst f the stnes were mined frm the suburban(郊外的)district f Fangshan and ther districts. Cnstructin f the Frbidden City brught huge hardship t the labring peple.
The Palace is the largest piece f ancient Chinese architecture(建筑)still standing. Sme f the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
