Having been down on myself and unhappy in my marriage I spent the week not being very nice to anyone in my family. I felt myself distancing myself from those people that were not the root of my anger. Those little people with sweet innocent eyes were wondering why Mommy was only going through the motions, wondering why there was no love in her actions. I pushed my daughter away as she tried to hug me.

For years I had made such a big deal out of having dinner as a family but during this time of heartache that I was experiencing I just couldn't bring myself to be with them. I began to hate them. It would be so easy to change my life without having them to think about. And how many times had I heard that I needed to do what was best for the kids. Did nobody care what was best for me?

Then I watched a show on TV that made me realize what I was doing to these poor kids. I needed to control my own life, not only for my own sake but for my kids too.

That night I went to sleep with calm thoughts in my head. The issues in my marriage had not been resolved but the issues I had with myself had. I knew what I had to do to better my life and my children’s too.

The next morning after fixing and eating breakfast with my three wonderful kids, my middle son who is 5-year-old put his arms around me and said Hey Mom, you’re really being nice to us today." What could I say to that tiny face to take away all the pain that I had caused? I looked at his beautiful blue eyes and told him that mommy hadn't been very happy lately and that I was sorry that I was not being nice.

Making small talk is an important skill for social situations such as business dinners, weddings, business parties and even first dates. Making small talk is an art that can be mastered.

Preparing for conversation doesn't mean doing a month's worth of reading while taking notes just for an evening of cocktails. Prepare small talk for your event by coming up with two or three topics you would feel comfortable talking about if there is a pause in the conversation. Try current events, a favorite trip you've taken or a topic like cooking. Ask questions that require a story rather than a one-word answer, recommends writer Jessica Stillman in the article "How to Make Small Talk Way More Fun," published on Inc. com. For example, "How did you get started in your line of work?" requires a story, but "What do you do for a living, can be answered in just a few words.

Begin small talk by making eye contact and offering the person a warm and inviting smile. This reduces tension and tells the other person you are open to a conversation. Don Gabor, the writer of Talking with Confidence for the Painfully Shy, says that eye contact with another person for five to 10 seconds indicates curiosity and is considered friendly. However, never stare directly into another person's eyes too much, as this can make him feel uncomfortable.

Keep the conversation positive, especially with people you've only jus; met. Keeping the chat focused on positive things will help people feel better rather than worse alter having a conversation with you. Asking someone about her day, offering a sincere compliment or keeping the mood light by making the other person laugh are all ways to begin small talk that leads to a positive conversation.

    28. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

    A. Jessica Stillman’s tips for small talk.      B. Preparations for small talk.

    C. Topics for making small talk.            D. A story instead of a one-word answer.

    29. What's the meaning of your friendly eye contact during small talk?

    A. You are uncomfortable.          B. You are more confident.

    C. Your are proud of small talk.      D. You want to communicate further.

    30. What can we infer from the passage?

    A. A positive chat is more important.

    B. Making small talk is difficult to learn.

    C. Most conversations begin with introductions.

    D. People love to talk about themselves, so be a great listener.

    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. How to Make Small Talk                 B. What to Prepare for Small Talk

    C. How to Avoid Problems about Small Talk    D. What Are the Best Ways to Begin Small Talk

    D

Researchers surveyed over 1200 families to find out if parents had concerns about their children’s weight and if they took any preventative action to avoid fatness in their children.

The study of over 1100 families found that 89% of parents of overweight 5-6 year-olds and 63% of parents of overweight 10-12 year-olds were unaware their child was overweight. It also showed that 71% of parents of overweight 5-6 year-olds and 43% of parents with overweight 10-12 year-olds did not think their child's weight was a problem.

"These are quite troubling results and suggest that current fatness prevention campaigns are not hitting the mark with parents," said head of the Centre, Professor David Crawford.

Professor Crawford said it was not surprising that many parents were unaware their child was overweight given that "many adults are not able to recognize overweight in themselves."

He suggested that some reasons for lacking recognition of childhood overweight could be that some parents, particularly mothers, tend to judge overweight by whether or not their child is made fun of about their weight at school.

Despite parents' inability to recognize problem weight in their children, Professor Crawford said a number of parents reported they employed various strategies to help prevent their child from gaining too much weight.

The most common strategies included: promoting a balanced diet; promoting physical activity; reducing junk food; limiting the amount of fat and sugar; promoting more fruit.

While this is encouraging, Professor Crawford said less than 10% of parents increased consumption of fruit and vegetables as a potential weight-control strategy, and few reported that they tried to limit or reduce their child’s intake of high-energy drinks.

    32. How does the author develop his idea mainly in Paragraph 2?

    A. By giving examples.      B. By explaining terms.

    C. By listing figures.        D. By analyzing causes.

    33. What does the underlined part "given that" probably mean in Paragraph 4?

    A. Arguing.      B. Explaining.      C. Deciding.      D. Considering.

    34. Why do some parents not recognize that their children are overweight?

    A. Because they are too busy working.

    B. Because they don't care about their weight.

    C. Because they don't know what is about fatness.

    D. Because they judge being overweight in a wrong manner.

    35. What's Crawford's attitude towards the most common weight-control strategies?

    A. Positive.      B. Negative.      C. Uninterested.      D. Confused.

    How To Attract Good Luck

Good luck is believed to prevent bad accidents, improve health, and make the flow of money better.   36   There are many ways to improve your luck. Here are some tips on how to attract good luck:

37   Gaining friends and socializing is a way to attract good luck. It brings a lot of positive energy to your life. This not only means that you will have a better social life; it also means that you will have a better chance of attracting good luck.

Don’t stress it.   38   This means that all your energy will be imbalanced. This is not a way to attract good luck. Stress can come from a number of different sources: your job, love life, family, or friends. Take time to relax and find ways to release any stress you have. Logically speaking, avoiding stress will help you perform better at any task.

Remove all selfish thoughts. There is nothing worse for your luck than selfish thoughts. Being selfish creates a lot of negative energy around you, your home, and the space you work in. Negative energy is something you take with you anywhere. While it is important to think of yourself, still think of what your impact is on others.   39

You can have an improved state of living if you have a lot of good luck. There are many ways to attract good luck, as well as ways to prevent attracting bad luck.   40   Follow these simple tips and you'll be attracting luck in no time.

    A. Create positive connections.

    B. Stress can cause negative energies to be angry.

    C. Try studying about the different beliefs about luck.

    D. This creates a lot of positive energy which good luck can feed on.

    E. This is why many people have studied luck and how we affect our luck.

    F. You don't need a lot of lucky charms; all you need is a little positive energy.

    G. This is because good luck is based very simply on positive energies and attitudes.
