When I was studying abrad in Australia, I traveled extensively (广泛地) all ver the cuntry with tw friends. We bked everything frm whale watching t a private flight ver Munt Ksciuszk, and racked up (累积) sme impressive credit card bills. Anther internatinal student almst lked dwn her nse at ur pricey adventures, declaring that she had cme t Australia t study, nt t empty her saving accunt n travel.
My questin t her came. Why wuld yu cme literally halfway arund the wrld t save yur mney and keep yur nse pressed int a bk every weekend? Wuld yu g t China and nt visit the Great Wall because it csts mney? Wuld yu g t Italy and skip visiting the Vatican because it requires an admissin ticket?

Mre and mre peple arund the wrld are living in city areas and the need fr high-quality fresh fd is rising. At the same time, new hmes, apartment buildings, shpping centers and rads are taking the place f rich land near cities. That makes grwing crps in tall buildings an interesting slutin.
In Dallas, Texas, a cmpany called Green Habitat Hydrpnics (GHH) sells vertical farming (垂直农业) supplies. “Yu can cntrl anything and everything yu want t with hydrpnics—the prcess f grwing plants in sand, small stnes r water with added nutrients (营养物) but nt sil,” Kris Maxwell, a sales emplyee at GHH said. “Fr example, certain plants need certain nutrients and PH levels. But dn’t wrry. Yu can change the hydrpnics slutins (溶液) by adding r taking away nutrients, r by changing the PH level, r even by cntrlling the amunt f water in a slutin, s that plants get all the nutrients and water requirements they need. There are even different slutins fr certain stages in the plants’ grwth.”
In this indr envirnment, LED lights, which are envirnmentally friendly, replace the sun. Heaters, clers, and special machines cntrl the temperature and humidity. Up t 300 plants can grw in ne cntainer unit.
GHH als sells aerpnics (气雾栽培) systems. With this system, plants are placed in huge cntainers where nly the rts are put in a slutin. Nutrient rich wastes frm fish, fr example, are filtered and sent thrugh the system.
The gd thing abut this methd is that n fertilizers have t be used because the fish prduce all f the necessary nutrients. Anther advantage f vertical farming is that n pests will damage yur crps.

Parents pay tutring arund $ 200 per mnth fr each child t get math, reading and ther kinds f lessns nce r twice a week with their wn lessns and hmewrk intended t be mre challenging than what is ffered by the schls. They teach these little kids hw t recgnize letters, numbers, patterns and shapes.
Children in after -schl centers can get cnfused abut which kind f learning matters mre, but parents keep their kids in tutring fr years if they think it’s getting results. “We just kept her in the prgram, because it was wrking,” the mther f a fifth grader tld me. A furth-grade student mentined that her regular teacher cunted her private math center tasks as satisfying her schl hmewrk.
Trublingly, educatrs believe that the grwth f private tutring in the U.S. is leading t a sense f pressure that can result in emtinal prblems. “The students wh take classes utside f schl make ther kids feel bad, because they’re brighter and they d mre, and they can d it faster,” a Bstn- area elementary schl headmaster tld me.
What’s mre frightening is happening. A grwing educatin arms race is ging amng families. They feel pressured t make sure their kids learn enugh t be abve their grade level and ranked at r near the tp f their classes. Many parents tld me they keep their children in after-schl educatin simply t keep up with thse wh d. Tutring educatin is seriusly changing what it means t g t schl.

Then they actively put frward their suggestins: baking mre brwnies, having a water balln fight and s n. Julia gave the mst. Sn, I had mre than a dzen suggestin. Sme were cmpletely pssible, and thers were really hard. But I had a starting pint. I put the list n the fridge and determined t make gd use f it.
Over the next few weeks, I picked several suggestins frm the list and had a try. I made mre ckies and played mre games. I read bks and kicked sccer balls. It was a great time. One afternn, Julia came int the kitchen and tld me she was seeing my lve. Actually I didn’t change much. I just did mre playing and less cleaning. I’d given them mre f my time, and what I’d gtten in return was wrth it.

Nt surprisingly, I didn’t get that part-time jb. The fllwing year I had a secnd chance at a gas statin. This time I shwed up in a nice shirt with a tie and answered every questin plitely. And I gt the jb. I learned hw t deal with mney, hw t fix cars, and hw t deal with peple. Mst imprtantly, I had learned a life skill. When I graduated frm high schl, and my friends were still wrking at cffee shps, I was wrking fr a building cmpany. I helped build the Westin Htel and Ocean View Apartments. It inspired me t becme an engineer, and nw I design and build airplanes. S hw did I get t where I am? My teachers wuld say it sure wasn’t my study habits: In my case, I learned with my hands.
