Fr even the mst sharp-eyed rnithlgists (鸟类学家), a small bird can lk much like anther. But luckily, researchers have built an artificial intelligence (AI) mdel. “Our study prvides the means f vercming ne f the greatest limitatins n the study f wild birds—reliably recgnizing individuals.” said Andre Ferreira, lead authr f the study.
Ferreira began explring AI’s ptential while in Suth Africa, where he studied the sciable weaver, a bird which wrks with thers t build the wrld’s largest nest. Ferreira wanted t understand each individual’s cntributin t building the nest, but it was hard thrugh direct bservatin because they were ften hiding in trees r building parts f the nest ut f sight. This experience cntributed t his building the AI mdel, which culd recgnize individual birds simply frm a phtgraph f their backs while they were busy with nest-building.
The mdel must be trained with thusands f labeled images in rder t accurately identify individuals, but acquiring labeled phtgraphs f birds is very difficult. Ferreira and ther researchers finally vercame this challenge. They built feeders with camera traps and sensrs. Mst birds in the study ppulatins already carried a tag (标签) similar t micrchips which are put in cats and dgs. Antennae (天线) n the bird feeders read the identity f the bird frm these tags and tuched ff the cameras.
Accrding t Ferreira, the use f the Al mdel culd save n expensive fieldwrk and spare researchers frm prcedures such as catching and marking animals. “It remves the need fr the human t be a data cllectr, s researchers can spend mre time thinking abut the questins instead f cllecting the data,” said Ferreira.
The AI mdel is currently nly able t re-identify individuals that have been shwn t it befre. The researchers are nw trying t build mre pwerful AI mdels that can identify larger study grups f birds, and distinguish individuals even if the AI mdel have never seen them befre. This wuld enable new individuals withut tags t be recrded by the cameras and recgnized by the cmputers.

根据第一段“Our study prvides the means f vercming ne f the greatest limitatins n the study f wild birds—reliably recgnizing individuals.(我们的研究为克服野生鸟类研究中的一个最大限制--可靠地识别个体--提供了手段。)”
根据第二段“This experience cntributed t his building the AI mdel, which culd recgnize individual birds simply frm a phtgraph f their backs while they were busy with nest-building.(这种经验有助于他建立人工智能模型,这种模型可以简单地从一张鸟类背部的照片中识别出它们正在忙于筑巢的个体。)”
根据前文“The mdel must be trained with thusands f labeled images in rder t accurately identify individuals, but acquiring labeled phtgraphs f birds is very difficult.(为了准确地识别个体,模型必须经过成千上万张标记图像的训练,但是获取标记鸟类的照片是非常困难的。)”
根据最后一段“The researchers are nw trying t build mre pwerful AI mdels that can identify larger study grups f birds, and distinguish individuals even if the AI mdels have never seen them befre.(研究人员现在正试图建立更强大的人工智能模型,以识别更大的研究鸟类群体,并区分个体,即使人工智能模型以前从未见过它们。)”
根据第一段第三句“T spark students’ interest, he created the “Hur f Cde”, which intrduces the wrld f cmputing t anyne, frm ages 14 t 104, in a fun, interactive manner.(为了激发学生们的兴趣,他创造了“编码一小时”,以一种有趣的互动方式向14岁至104岁的任何人介绍计算世界。)”
根据第二段最后一句“Thugh each prject is designed t last just sixty minutes, beginners can deal with as many challenges as they desire.(虽然每个项目的设计时间只有60分钟,但初学者想要应对多少挑战都可以。)”
根据第三句第一句“T help intrduce cmputer science in classrms n a mre regular basis, Cde. rg has als develped a catalg f nline curses that can be incrprated (纳入) in a schl’s regular curriculum.(为了帮助在课堂上更定期地介绍计算机科学,Cde.rg还开发了一个在线课程目录,可以纳入学校的常规课程。)”
根据最后一段第一句“Thanks t the effrts f the pineer, abut 40 percent f US schls nw ffer cmputer science as a subject.(由于先驱的努力,大约40%的美国学校现在提供计算机科学作为一门学科。)”和第三句和第四句“Even mre encuraging, eight years ag, just 19,390 students tk an Advanced Placement Cmputer Science exam. By the spring f 2017, the number had jumped 415 percent t 99,868.(更令人鼓舞的是,八年前,只有19390名学生参加了美国大学预修课程的计算机科学考试。到2017年春天,这一数字跃升了415%,达到99868人。)”可知,最后一段中的数字显示了Hadi Partvi努力的效果。故选B。
