Example:The Sun’s Energy The sun, ur singular surce f renewable energy, sits at the center f the slar system and gives ut energy at an extremely large and relatively cnstant rate, 24 hurs per day, mre than 360 days f the year. If we culd harvest the energy cming frm just 10 hectares (25 acres) f the surface f the sun, we wuld have enugh t supply the current energy demand f the wrld.
Hwever, there are three imprtant reasns why this cannt be dne. First, the earth is displaced frm the sun, and since the sun's energy spreads ut like light frm a candle, nly a small amunt f the energy leaving an area f the sun reaches an equal area n the earth. Secnd, the earth turns abut its plar axis (极轴), s that any cllectin device lcated n the earth's surface can receive the sun's energy fr nly abut ne half f each day. The third and least factr is the cnditin f the thin shell f atmsphere that surrunds
the earth’s surface. At best the earth’s atmsphere accunts fr anther 30 percent reductin in the sun’s energy. As is widely knwn, hwever, the weather cnditins can stp all but a minimal amunt f slar radiatin frm reaching the earth’s surface fr many days in a rw.
We find that the mn is abut 239,000 miles (384,551 km) away frm the earth, and, t within a few thusand miles, its distance always remains the same. Yet a very little bservatin shws that the mn is nt standing till. Its distance frm the earth remains the same, but its directin cntinually changes. We find that it is traveling in a circle—r very nearly a circle—rund the earth, ging cmpletely rund nce a mnth, r, mre exactly, nce every 27 and 1/3 days. It is ur nearest neighbr in space, and like urselves it is kept tied t the earth by the earth's gravitatinal pull.
Except fr the sun, the mn lks the biggest bject in the sky. Actually it is ne f the smallest, and nly lks big because it is s near t us. Its diameter is nly 2,160 miles (3,476 km), r a little mre than a quarter f the diameter f the earth. Once a mnth, r, mre exactly, nce every 29 and 1/2 days, at the time we call “full mn”, its whle disc lks bright. At ther times nly part f it appears bright, and we always find that this is the part which faces twards the sun, while the part facing away frm the sun appears dark. Artists culd make their pictures better if they kept this in mind—nly thse parts f the mn which are lighted up by the sun are bright. This shws that the mn gives n light f its wn. It merely reflects the light f the sun, like a huge mirrr hung in the sky.
