A student is learning t speak British English. He wnders: Can I cmmunicate with Americans? Can they understand me? Learners f English ften ask: What are the differences between British and American English? Hw imprtant are these differences?
Certainly! there are sme differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. Fr example, speakers f British English say “in hspital” and “Have yu a pen?”. Americans say “in the hspital” and “D yu have a pen?”. Prnunciatin is smetimes different. Americans usually sund theirs in wrds like “bird” and “hurt”. Speakers f British English d nt sund theirs in these wrds. There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vcabulary. An internatinal team f researchers frm the University f Oxfrd have fund that the way peple use the Internet is clsely tied t the seasnal mvements in the natural wrld. Their nline species searches fllw the patterns f seasnal animal migratins (迁徙).
Migratry birds (候鸟) fld back t where they reprduce every spring. That migratry behavir is accmpanied by sme human behavir. “The nline searches fr migratry species tend t increase in spring when thse birds arrive in the United States,” said the lead authr Jhn Mittermeier.
And nt just birds. Mittermeier and his team surveyed nearly 2.5 billin search recrds, fr 32,000 species, acrss 245 languages. They als saw variable search rates fr insects, hrsetails and flwering plants. Seasnal trends seemed t be widespread in nline searching behavir fr many species f plants and animals.
This finding suggests new ways t mnitr changes in the wrld's bilgical diversity. It als shws new ways t see hw much peple care abut nature, and which species and areas might be the mst effective targets fr cnservatin.
Mittermeier is encuraged by the search results. He cmmented, “I think there's a cncern amng cnservatinists (自然环境保护主义者) that peple are lsing tuch with the natural wrld and that they're nt interacting with native species anymre. And s in that sense, it was really exciting and quite unexpected fr me t see peple's interest clsely related t changes in nature.”
