    A few plants in the cabbage and mustard (芥菜) family pay a dramatic price t fight ff hungry caterpillars (毛毛虫): they kill ff patches f their wn leaves where butterflies have laid eggs. Withut a living anchr, the eggs wrinkle and die. These plants' egg-killing abilities have been dcumented since at least the 1980s, but a new study shws they appear in just a few clsely related plants in this family — and they are triggered nly by certain butterfly species.
    Nina Faturs f Wageningen University in the Netherlands and her clleagues investigated 31 plant species in the target family. First, they dabbed the plants' leaves with liquid that had been expsed t egg material frm a butterfly species knwn t lay eggs n them. Fur clsely related plant species reliably killed ff the treated leaf patches. Further tests cnfirmed that the species with the mst distinct respnse nly reacted strngly when the egg material came frm ne grup f butterflies, Pieris, which lays eggs n these plants in the wild. This is "clear evidence" that specific butterfly species culd have stimulated the evlutin f the necrsis (坏死) defense, Faturs says. The researchers als tracked eggs laid by wild butterflies t cnfirm the defense mechanism. The wrk was detailed in New Phytlgist.
    "It's very unlikely that yu find this by cincidence," says University f Sheffield mlecular plant bilgist Jurriaan Tn, wh was nt invlved in the study. He adds that the plants' relatedness, cupled with their exaggerated reactin t these butterflies, suggests a heated evlutinary "arms race" tk place between the plants and insects.
