For Robert Valderzak of Washington D.C. , Tuesday’s earthquake was a miracle (奇迹). Ever since he fell and got his skull (颅骨) broken on Father’s Day, 75-years-old Valderzak had suffered severe hearing loss. But after the 5.8 quake, he could hear everything.
Valderzak was chatting with his daughter and three sons when the quake hit D.C.’s Veterans Affairs Hospital, where he was batting cancer. “ It shook me terrible—right out of the bed,” said Valderzak. “ But after that it stopped. And my son talked to me, and I could hear his voice.”
Tests confirmed Valdezak’s significant hearing improvement. But his doctors think they have a medical explanation for the “miracle”. He had conductive (传导性的)hearing loss, caused by a liquid in his middle ear, as well as loss due to nerve damage.” Said Dr. Ross Fletcher, chief of staff at the VA Hospital. “ A combination of a drug he was taking and the earthquake event itself likely led to him losing the liquid and gaining back his hearing.”
Dr. Jennifer Smullen of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary said the shaking itself might not have been enough to clear the fluid from Valderzak’s inner ear.” But if somebody is suddenly surprised, and shouts out, sometimes that’s enough to clear some fluid out the ear drum,” she said.
Valderzak had adjusted to his hearing loss with the help of a special microphone and some training in lip reading. But he situation was far from satisfactory.
“ The devices helped, but by the time I got them all connected up, everyone had left and I was talking to myself,” he said, adding that lip reading meant he could only talk to one person at a time. But now he can talk to all four of his kids again.
    24. What was Valderzak doing when the earthquake happened?
A.Enjoying the Father’s Day party. B.Talking with his children in hospital
C.Visiting a hospital with his children D.Receiving treatment for his hearing loss
    25. What caused Valderzak to gain back his hearing according to Dr. Smullen?
A.A drug he was taking B.The powerful earthquake
C.A drug and the earthquake D.The shaking and his own shouting
    26. What do the underlined words “lip reading” probably refer to?
    A.Reading silently without moving lips.
B.Talking to oneself to improve the speed of speaking
C.Understanding speech by observing the movements of lips
D.Moving lips in special ways so as to produce the best sounds
    27. What type of writing is this text?
A.A medical record B.A book review
C.An official document D.A news report
    C
Four days after Dad’s 67th birthday, he had a heart attack. He was lucky-he survived. But something inside him had died. His enthusiasm for life was gone.
My husband and I asked Dad to live with us on our small farm, hoping the fresh air would help him adjust. Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated.
One day I read an article about a nursing home. Several depressed patients’ attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given dogs. So, I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. As soon as I got there, a pointer’s (指示犬)eyes caught my attention. They watched me calmly.
A staff member said: “He got here two weeks ago and we’ve heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.” I turned to the man in horror. “You mean you’re going to kill him?”
“Ma’am,” he said gently. “We don’t have room for every unclaimed dog.”
Glancing at the dog, Dad wrinkled his face and turned back toward the house. Then, suddenly, the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He sat down in front of Dad. Dad’s anger melted, and soon he was hugging the animal.
It was the beginning of a warm friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne. Together they spent long hours walking down dusty lanes and relaxing on the banks of streams.
Dad’s bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne went on to make many friends. Then, late on night two years later, I felt Cheyenne’s cold nose searching through my bed covers. He had never come into our bedroom before at night. I ran into my father’s room and found that he had passed away.
Two days later, my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad’s bed. As I buried him near their favorite stream, I silently thanked the dog for restoring Dad’s peace of mind.
    28. Why did Dad criticize everything the author did?
A.The state of his illness worsened B.His daughter couldn’t do things well
C.He didn’t like his daughter’s farm D.The disease took away his interest in life

    31. What’s the best title for the passage?
