But starting arund 125000 years ag and cntinuing until tday, large mammals have been mre likely t g extinct than smaller nes, the researchers fund. The average 6 f surviving mammals has decreased as a result. And thse large-mammal extinctins are tightly cupled with the 7 f humans. Fr mst f mammalian 8 histry, an animal's size was nt predictive f its extinctin risk. That 9 nly appeared nce humans began t live alngside large mammals.
This finding des nt mean climate-related changes culd nt have 10 sme wildlife ppulatins, enabling humans t mre easily bring abut their eventual dwnfall. 11 , it suggests the greater likelihd f large mammals ging extinct is tied t human activities. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit hard, fishermen watched their markets dry up. Restaurants-nrmally majr fish buyers-clsed r cut back rders significantly. Fishermen weren't sure if they were ging t get paid fr what they fished.
Meanwhile as peple lst jbs, fd banks started t see a great demand fr services. Things were getting desperate, with lng lines fr fd assistance in many states.
Out f these dual crises, a new idea was brn. Fd assistance prgrams acrss the cuntry have started cnnecting with lcal fishermen t stck up n lcal seafd, many fr the first time. And the arrangement seems t be helping the fishermen, the ecnmy and thse in need f healthy fd.
Accrding t Catherine D' Amat, CEO f the Greater Bstn Fd Bank, the netwrk usually keeps fur r five weeks f fd n hand in case f emergencies. The pandemic hit, and "we fund urselves belw ne week f stck and ging dwn rapidly," she says. That's because the fd bank nrmally distributes abut I millin punds f fd a week, and that became 2.5 millin punds f fd a week, D' Amat says. While Cngress and the states have increased funding and dnatins fr fd banks during the pandemic, it hasn't been enugh.
"Fr many years, we have been wanting t be able t wrk with rganizatins in the fishing industry," D' Amat says. But it's cmplicated. Fishermen catch a lt f big fish, and fd banks wh might take it need the prducts t be cut small and easy t use fr custmers. It als has t be fish they knw and recgnize. The barriers have been t high in many places t make it wrk. But this spring, the state department f agriculture cnnected the fd bank with sme grant makers. They talked t sme lcal fishermen abut develping a traditinal New England fish sup.
The grants paid fishermen fr their catch and prvided mney fr a lcal manufacturer t prcess, freeze and deliver the sup t fd banks in family-size servings. A seismic (地震的;重大的) shift in climate science might be heating up.
New research shws that sund waves, prduced by earthquakes can be used t measure temperatures in the cean which traps 90% f the heat Earth absrbs frm the sun, making lng-term changes in cean warmth, a majr factr in hw the wrld might respnd t glbal warming.
Fr years the main apprach f measuring cean temperature has been Arg, an array (阵列) f 4000 autmatic flats, which drifts the glbe, sampling cean water and measuring its temperature. Yet Arg measurements stp at 2000 meters.
The new technique called "Seismic Ocean Thermmetry", wuld be especially useful in detecting lng-term changes in cean temperatures deeper than Arg's reach.
"Ocean Acustic Tmgraphy", the basis fr the current research, was first tested nearly 30 years ag. The initial studies created sund waves artificially, basically increasing the vlume n giant underwater speakers. Scientists measured the sund's travel time frm the speakers t receivers thusands f kilmeters away. Because cean temperatures affect the speed f the waves, the researchers culd calculate average temperatures alng their paths. But sme believed the nise was a threat t cean life and the technique never tk ff.
The new study instead uses a natural sund surce fr investigatin: earthquakes making a lw, cntinuus nise beneath the seaflr ff the cast f Sumatra that drum up sund waves in the cean. On the shres f the Chags Islands in the East Indian Ocean, between 2005 and 2021 Seismic Statin Dieg Garcia recrded seismic waves prduced by thse earthquakes. Sme f thse waves created physical changes in land and sea as they traveled. Others were sund waves r T waves that mved thrugh the deep cean, delivering valuable data abut cean temperature.
12 years f data cupled with mathematical mdels pinted t a temperature change f rughly 0.044 degrees per decade, a trend larger than thse predicted by Arg. The findings suggest that Seismic Ocean Thermmetry is a feasible methd t measure changes in cean temperature. Further data frm ther regins f the glbe and ther timeframes wuld help imprve the warning mdels and predictins.
And in future studies the researchers plan t listen directly fr sund waves, using a netwrk f hydrphnes, micrphnes which detect sund waves under water. Sund waves set the tne fr a deep dive int ur warming ceans even if they fail t reach 60000 miles under the sea?
〔1〕What disadvantage des Arg have?
A.Its reach is limited.
B.It takes lng t cllect samples.
C.It desn't wrk glbally.
D.Its predictin isn't reliable at all.
〔2〕It can be learned that Ocean Acustic Tmgraphy ________.
A.was tested many times but never succeeded
B.remained unppular fr fear f ptential harm
C.was assumed t be t cmplicated t be cntrllable
D.measured cean temperature just as the new research des
〔3〕It can be inferred frm the new findings that ________.
A.sme warming is wrking its way deeper int the cean
B.cean temperature is rising faster wing t earthquakes
C.sund travels faster in clder water than in htter water
D.sund waves will slw dwn the warming f the cean
〔4〕Which is the best title fr the passage?
A.Sund Waves First Applied t Climate Science.
B.New Factrs Fund t Be Heating up the Ocean.
C.A Natural Apprach Hlding Back Glbal Warming.
D.Ocean's Hidden Heat Measured with Earthquake Sunds.

Rbtic Exskeletns
Thanks t rbtic exskeletns, victims f spinal crd (脊髓) injury have a new reasn t hpe. Rbtic exskeletns, cnsisting f metal legs, mtrs, batteries, wiring, a cntrller and a set f strips wrk tgether like the user's bnes, muscles and nerves-utside the bdy. Fastened int an exskeletn and supprted by sticks, users can direct the machinery t take them where they want t g.
In additin t partly restring mbility, rbtic exskeletns ffer the significant mental and physical health benefits f standing up and mving. Just being able t get up frm a wheelchair gives patients a mre natural, psitive view f the wrld. It als helps relieve pressure n patients' skin and reduces the danger f pressure sres. Standing upright strengthens a disabled persn's muscles and bnes, imprves heart health, and reduces certain ther health cmplicatins (并发症). And it may actually result in partial nerve repair, smething that can nly happen when a patient is able t mve.
As prmising as this technlgy is, hwever, it is n simple cure-all fr paralysis(瘫痪) r its cmplicatins. The mtin is nt accurate cmpared with natural walking, and exskeletns are nt easy t use, especially n surfaces that are nt smth. They are very expensive, csting abut US$100000. Health insurance plans and gvernment prgrams may nt cver the cst f buying ne.
Nevertheless, rbtic exskeletns, and access t them, will cntinue t imprve. As with much mdem technlgy, rbtic exskeletns will likely becme mre capable and easy t use, even as their cst ges dwn. Gvernments and insurers may increasingly see that the health benefits f these walking machines utweigh the csts, making it easier t fund them. Perhaps the day will cme when nearly everyne paralyzed by spinal crd injury will be able t "walk" again.
