短文填空常考查名词、动词、形容词、副词、介词、连词和固定搭配等。因此做好此题是取得高分的关键。
解题技巧
1．第一遍通读全文，从整体上感知全文，了解故事的时间、地点、人物等之间的关系，为短文的填空打下坚实的基础，切忌看一空填一空。
2．第二遍逐句阅读并填空，根据句子的语法及上下文的整体逻辑关系用恰当的词填空，特别是根据意思可能有多种用法时，不要受汉语的影响，应填入恰当的并符合英美人表达习惯的单词。原则先易后难。
3．第三遍复查答案。将填空的短文再完整地阅读一次，以检 查上下文内容是否协调、顺理成章，所填答案是否最为合理，语法结构是否正确等。
注意事项
1．熟记表示时间的名词，如星期、月份、季节等，描写天气的有关形容词 (rainy, snwy, windy, cludy)，描写人的喜怒哀乐 (happy, sad, laugh, cry, excited, scared, surprised)、描写人的外表 (tall, shrt, thin, heavy, yung, ld) 和人的动作 (jump, run, walk, talk, sit, swim, sing) 等词。
2．填词时应注意词形，不可简单地都填原形词。若空格内填的是名词，要看清是单数还是复数；若填动词，一定要考虑时态和语态，不外乎是动词原形、动词过去式、动词现在分词这三种形式；当前面有t时，一般是不定式，就填动词原形；但t也可能是介词，那就要填动词的现在分词；如果前面有be动词，则填动词现在分词，也可填动词的过去分词表示被动，这种情况比较少出现；
解题技巧
若是填代词，就要分清是主格、宾格还是形容词性物主代词、名词性物主代词，如果是放在动词前则填主格，动词后则填宾格，如果后面还有名词，则填形容词性物主代词，如果后面没有名词则是填名词性物主代词；若前面是be动词，后面也可能是填形容词，如果是这样，就要看清是原级、比较级还是最高级等等。
要善于从文中同样结构或类似中寻找线索，从中得到提示和启发。填时间、地点或交通方式等时，上下文一定会给予明示或暗示。有时会遇到这种情况：有的难题可能知其意而不会写或不太确定具体是什么单词，这个时候不必急着填，而要从多方位考虑或细看下文，下文一定会给提示的，只是并不是每个考生都能从中发现并获取。其实，平时在训练这类题型时，只要考生用心注意，用心总结，不难发现10个空格中至少有4～5个空格是能从上下文中获取得到的。
