(2020·合肥第一次质检)We can have vide chat with astrnauts abard the Internatinal Space Statin and watch live ftage frm the frzen heights f a muntain. But cmmunicating with a submarine(潜艇) r a diver is nt s easy. The lack f practical methds fr sharing data between underwater and airbrne(空气传播的) devices has lng been a frustratin fr scientists. The difficulty stems frm the fact that radi signals wrk perfectly in air travel but prly in water. Snar signals used by underwater sensrs reflect ff the surface f water rather than reaching the air.
Nw, researchers at MIT have develped a methd with the ptential t revlutinize underwater cmmunicatin. “What we’ve shwn is that it’s actually feasible t cmmunicate frm underwater t the air,” says Fadel Adib, a prfessr at MIT’s Media Lab, wh led the research.
The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine t send snar signals t the surface, making vibratins(震动) crrespnding t the 1s and 0s f the data. A surface receiver then reads and decdes these tiny vibratins. The researchers call the system TARF. “It has any number f ptential realwrld uses,” Adib says. “It culd be used t find dwned planes underwater by reading signals frm snar devices in a plane’s black bx and it culd allw submarines t cmmunicate with the surface.”
Right nw the technlgy is lwreslutin. The initial study was cnducted in the MIT swimming pl at maximum depths f arund 11 r 12 feet. The next steps fr the researchers are t see if TARF is wrkable at much greater depths and under varying cnditins—high waves, strms, schls f fish. They als want t see if they can make the technlgy wrk in the ther directin—air t water. If the technlgy prves successful in realwrld cnditins, expect “texting while diving” t be the latest underwater fashin.
