    Abing was brn in 1893, in the eastern city f Wuxi. His fficial name was Hua Yanjun. His mther died a year after Abing’s birth. Abing was raised by extended family until the age f 8, when he went t live with his father at the temple. His father trained him in erhu frm the age f 12. When he was 34, Abing lst his sight and became hmeless. He lived n streets and perfrmed music t make mney. Abing died in 1950. He is cnsidered t be ne f the mst imprtant Chinese musicians f the 20th century.

The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strng sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Mn Reflected n Secnd Spring), but it was ne f the mst mving pieces f music that I’ve ever heard. The erhu sunded s sad that I almst cried alng with it as I listened. Later I lked up the histry f Erquan Yingyue, and I began t understand the sadness in the music.
