The Melbourne Magic Festival in Australia attracts crazy fans of all ages to the Arts Centre Melbourne. The annual event includes the Junior Championships of Magic, a showcase for Australia’s promising magicians under the age of 18.
The competitors in 2018 included Nicola Gidley, 16, who competed in both the stage magic and close-up magic competitions. For her stage act, Nicola performed a soccer routine: She floated a soccer ball and somehow caused a whistle to disappear. For the close-up act, Nicola performed mind-bending tricks with Rubik’s Cubes. Her impressive routines earned her third prize in both competitions.
Nicola entered the world of magic when she was just 12, almost by chance. After injuring her knee playing cricket, Nicola needed surgery. This left her on crutches for three months. With nothing to do, she found a pack of cards and began to “learn simple tricks off YouTube, ” she said. “Then I moved on to bigger and better things, such as tricks with rabbits and doves. ”
Nicola’s hard work has been paying off. Just last year, she was awarded a full scholarship to the well-known Tannen’s Magic Camp in Pennsylvania. The camp is situated in a “Harry Potter-like castle”, Nicola explained, where students participate in classes and workshops run by leading magicians.
Stepping on stage in front of an audience can be worrying, Nicola acknowledged. “But with each show, ” she added, “I become more and more confident. ”
When asked for advice for ambitious magicians, Nicola said, “Perform any chance you get. The more experience you have on stage in front of an audience, the better you become as a performer and a magician. ”

On Saturday evening, CCTV showed a computer-generated image of the Chang’e 3 lander’s path as it approached the surface of the moon, saying that during the landing period it needed to have no contact with Earth. As it was just hundreds of meters away the lander’s camera broadcast images of the moon’s surface.

Living to the ripe old age of 90 may depend on your body size—both height and weight—as well as your level of physical activity, and geeing to influence a woman’s lifespan more than it does a man’s.
The study found women who lived to 90 were, on average, taller and had put on less weight since the age of 20 as compared to women who were shorter and heavier. 1 However, men saw more benefit from physical activity than women.
In 1986 researchers asked over 7, 000 Norwegian men and women between age 55 and 69 about their height, current weight, and weight at age 20. Both genders also told researchers about their current physical activities. 2 The men and women were then sorted into daily activity quotas: less than 30 minutes, 30 to 60 minutes, and 90 minutes or more.
Men and women in the study fared very differently when it came to the impact of body size and exercise.
Women who weighed less at age 20 and put on less weight as they aged were more likely to live longer than heavier women. 3 The study found women who were taller than 5 feet 9 inches were 31% more likely to live into their 90s than women who were less than 5 feet 3 inches.
4 Men who spent 90 minutes a day or more being active were 39% more likely to live to 90 than men who were physically active for less than 30 minutes.
However, women who were physically active for more than 60 minutes a day were only 21%more likely to live to 90 than those who did 30 minutes or less. And unlike men, there was no bonus for increasing activity. 5
A. Height played a major factor.
B. No such association was seen for men.
C. The study was observational and couldn’t establish cause.
D. In fact, the study found that the optimal level of activity for women was 60 minutes a day.

Stefano Boeri, the Italian architect, famous for his Bosco Verticale, a group of tree-covered skyscrapers in Milan, introduced his new plans to pioneer a similar project in the Chinese city of Nanjing.
The Chinese version of Boeri’s Bosco Verticale, or vertical forest, will be his first project in Asia. The project will consist of two neighboring towers that will be coated with 23 different species of trees and more than 2, 500 kinds of bushes hanging down the sides of the buildings. The structures will be built with the ability to house offices and will feature a 247-room luxury hotel, as well as a museum and even a green architecture school. The towers are currently under construction and are set for completion within the next year.
But two buildings aren’t enough for the ambitious Boeri as he now has even bolder plans for China to create “forest cities” in a country that has become known as an urban center choking on poisonous gases and dust.
In an interview about his plans to “greenify” the city and country Boeri said, “We have been asked to design an entire city where you don’t only have one tall building, but you have 100 or 200 buildings of different sizes, all with trees and plants on the sides. ” Boeri continued, “We are working very seriously on designing all the different buildings. I think they will start to build at the end of this year. By 2020 we could imagine having the first forest city in China. ”
Although these towers will lend a huge hand in decreasing air pollution in China’s eastern city, Boeri has said, it will take more than a pair of tree-covered skyscrapers to really solve China’s pollution crisis. This is why the Italian architect hopes to repeat his design in other parts of the country, as well as in other places around the world.
