    Step Ⅱ Pre-reading (2 minutes)
    T: At the first perid, we learned the earthquake happened in Tangshan. In that article the writer mainly described what happened during the quake. And the descriptins are bjective. Nw, we will read a stry written by America’s mst ppular writer, Jack Lndn. In the article he expressed his wn feeling abut the San Francisc quake. His accunt f the disaster is bth factual and literary. Yu may feel it when yu are reading the article. At first I’d like t shw yu sme backgrund f this article. Please lk at the screen and read the passage.
    Step Ⅲ Reading (20 minutes)
    T: Nw that we have knwn the backgrund f the article, and smething abut the writer. Let’s read the article carefully, with these questins n the screen. Then yu can have a discussin. After that we’ll check them tgether.
    Shw n the screen.
    Ask the students t discuss the questins in grups. After that the teacher checks the answers with the whle class.
    T: Wh is the man in the picture?
    S1: Maybe he is the writer, Jack Lndn.
    T: Great! Yu are clever. Hw abut Questin 2: what can we see frm the wrd never in the sentence Never befre in the histry has a city been s cmpletely destryed?
    S2: Frm the wrd never, we can feel that the writer was very sad.
    T: Right. Never is a pwerful wrd and Lndn des nt use it carelessly here. It is sn fllwed by nthing, anther pwerful wrd. Hw many negative wrds are used in the first paragraph, and what can we knw frm these wrds?
    S3: There are six wrds. They are never, nthing, gne, n, useless and burst.
    T: Great! Yur answer is quite right.

    T: Terrific! Sit dwn please. Yu did a gd jb! Lndn wanted t make it very clear that the earthquake had caused almst ttal devastatin f this nce beautiful yung city. Nw wh wuld like t answer Questin 4:What’s the feature (特点) f the sentences in the first and secnd paragraph?

    T: Can yu tell us why the writer uses this kind f sentences?
    S4: I dn’t knw. But when I read these wrds, I felt a little bit ut f breath.
    T: Yeah, that’s the effect f the magic wrds. Anything else?
    S5: It als used the Parallelism sentences, such as A list f buildings undestryed was nw nly a few addresses. A list f the brave men and wmen wuld fill a library. A list f all thse killed will never be made.
    T: OK. Let’s lk at Questin 5. What’s the main idea f the secnd paragraph?
    S5: The main idea is the first sentence: Out at sea it was calm.
    T: Right. D yu knw why the writer put it here?
    S5: Let me try. The first paragraph gives us an impressin that it is very nisy; while the secnd ne is very calm. The situatin is quite ppsite.
    T: Gd! Here Lndn uses Cntrast ( 对比 ) t gd effect. Sit dwn, please. Nw let’s lk at the next questin: what can we see frm the first sentence and the last sentence?
    S6: The tw sentences give us a cntrast. Althugh the city was destryed, the peple were nt nervus r upset. They just did what they shuld d. I can feel that Lndn was full f prud f the peple.
    T: Yur answer is excellent! I think that’s the right attitude twards a disaster. And als that is the very thing we shuld learn. Dn’t yu think s?
    Ss: Yeah!
    Step Ⅳ Answering questins (5 minutes)
    T: I believe yu have learnt many things, frm the literary style t the fact f the earthquake and t the right attitude that we shuld face a disaster. Nw, let’s finish the tw exercises belw the article. After yu’ve dne, let’s check the answers tgether.
    Give the students sme time t finish the exercises and then check the answers with the whle class.

    Step Ⅴ Listening n Page 31 (10 minutes)
    This is a first-persn narrative stry. A man is giving his accunt f what happened during the secnd big earthquake that hit San Francisc in 1906. In this listening material the teacher shuld als remind the students t pay attentin t the sequence. Exercise 3 is designed fr this purpse. It is necessary t let the students practice reading the sentences alud.
    T: We’ll listen t the tape abut the stry f a persn, wh experienced the 1906 earthquake in San Francisc. It is a stry that describes what happens. This stry happens t be true and was written fr the Museum f the city f San Francisc. We have three chances t listen. First, listen and try t get sme details that Exercises 1 and 2 request; secnd, listen t finish the Exercises; Third, listen and check yur answers. Are yu ready? Nw, listen!
    It’s better t have the students listen twice t the material, after that, check the answers t the questins. Fr Exercise 3, teacher can ask ne student t tell the class his/her answers, and als can ask the students t retell the listening. This is a gd way t see if they can describe an earthquake. Fr Exercise 4, the students can read after the teacher, and pay attentin t liaisn and incmplete explsin.
    Step Ⅵ Hmewrk(2 minutes)
    T: In this class we read and listened t tw stries, bth f which are abut the 1906 San Francisc earthquake. The stries are true and were written fr the Museum f the City f San Francisc. The museum has many such persnal accunts and phts at httpwww. Sfmuseum. Org/1906/06.html .If yu are interested in them, yu can surf in the site I’ve given t yu. The ther is t g n with the listening and check the answers t the exercises.
    As luck wuld have it, at the time f the quake America’s mst famus writer, Jack Lndn just happened t be living near San Francisc. His accunt(叙述)f the disaster is bth factual and literary, that is, he tried t write nt nly fr readers f that time but readers yet t cme. Lndn, like mst great writers and frmer jurnalists, knew a gd stry when he saw it. He and his wife rde n hrseback at a fast gallp(飞驰 ) frm their ranch t the hills verlking the “ city by the bay.” What they saw bth hrrid(使害怕)and fascinated (吸引) them.
