I grew t be a tall girl but I tried t be as rdinary as pssible. At schl, I always chse a seat in the back f the rm, and never raised my hand in class. When I was 16, I went t my new schl. And I liked the English teacher. In my last year in high schl, hwever, we were tld that a new English teacher, Oliver Bascm, was ging t teach us.
Oliver Bascm! The girls laughed as we imagined a shrt and bald(秃头的)man. The situatin was nt funny, because this man wuld teach us fr the whle year. Surprisingly, after we pened the dr, there in frnt f the blackbard, we saw a yung and handsme man!
What fllwed was chas, seventeen-year-ld girls flying t get t seats in the frnt f the rm. And I managed t get a frnt and center desk.
I really wanted t make a gd impressin n my new teacher, but I usually kept quiet. The day that directins were given fr ur first majr writing assignment, I arrived late t class. A friend later gave me the guidelines and I thught I understd them. I wrked the whle weekend n the essay and waited nervusly fr Mr. Bascm’s evaluatin.
After three days, he arrived in class hlding the crrected papers. “I’ve chsen the ten best essays fr class discussin.” he said.
Twenty minutes later, my heart sank when he gt t the last essay, and I didn’t hear my name.
“These are all great essays,” Mr. Bascm cntinued. “Hwever, I am nw ging t read yu the mst successful f all…” We were all surprised as I was the authr f this unusual wrk. Like many ther peple, I lve my smart phne, which keeps me cnnected with the larger wrld that can g anywhere with me. I als lve my laptp, because it hlds all f my writing and thughts. In spite f this lve f technlgy, I knw that there are times when I need t mve away frm these devices and truly cmmunicate with thers.
On ccasin, I teach a curse called Histry Matters fr a grup f higher educatin managers. My gals fr the class include a full discussin f histrical themes and ideas. Because I want students t thrughly study the materials and exchange their ideas with each ther in the classrm, I have a rule — n laptp, iPads, phnes, etc. When students were tld my rule in advance f the class, sme f them were nt happy.
Mst students assume that my reasns fr this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technlgy. There’s a bit f truth t that. Sme students assume that I am anti-technlgy. There’s n truth in that at all. I lve technlgy and try t keep up with it, s I can relate t my students.
The real reasn why I ask students t leave technlgy at the dr is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep cnversins and truly engage cmplex ideas. Interruptins by technlgy ften break cncentratin and allw fr t much dependence n utside infrmatin fr ideas. I want students t dig deep within themselves fr inspiratin and ideas. I want them t push each ther t think differently and make cnnectins between the curse materials and the class discussin.
I’ve been teaching my histry class in this way fr many years and the evaluatins reflect student satisfactin with the envirnment that I create. Students realize that with deep cnversatin and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the curse materials beynd the classrm.
I’m nt saying that I wn’t ever change my mind abut technlgy use in my histry class, but until I hear a really gd reasn fr the change, I’m sticking t my plan. A few hurs f technlgy-free dialgue is just t sweet t give up.

A.the curse materialsB.discussin tpics
C.the authr’s class regulatinsD.thers’ misuse f technlgy

“When I grw up, I want t be a runner.” These wrds are spken by thusands f Kenyan children. 50 percent f the Kenyan tp runners are members f Kalenjin, ne minrity race f the cuntry. They make up less than tw percent f Kenya’s ppulatin. This fact has puzzled sprts scientists. They have spent cnsiderable time and effrt trying t answer ne questin: What enables the Kalenjin peple t run s fast?
Althugh the questin seems simple, finding the answer has prven t be difficult and cntrversial. A team f Danish sprts scientists spent 18 mnths and discvered the Kalenjins had remarkably slw heart rates even when running lng distances. The Kalenjins live in high-elevatin(高海拔) villages in the Rift Valley in western Kenya. Peple living at high elevatins prduce mre red bld cells, which aid in the transprt f xygen thrughut the bdy. Because the air is thinner and cntains less xygen at high elevatins, the bdy prduces mre red bld cells. Scientists believe there is a cnnectin between increased red bld cells and lw heart rates and that bth may enable high-altitude athletes t utperfrm thse wh train at lw altitudes. The Danish scientists als studied the bdies f the Kalenjins and cmpared them t thse f the Danes. They fund that the Kalenjins have lnger “birdlike” legs. The Kalenjins als have lwer bdy mass indexes (a measure f bdy fat based n weight and height) and shrter bdies than Danish peple.
As a result f the Danish study, sme scientists made the cnclusin that the Kalenjins pssess what is called a “speed gene(基因)”. Hwever, Kenyan runners were ffended by this cnclusin They credited their success t hard wrk and endless hurs f training.
Althugh the cntrversy ver the “speed gene” remains unslved, British runner M Farah’s experience ffers an interesting perspective n the subject. In 2005, he realized he wasn’t meeting his ptential as a runner. A grup f Kenyan runners were training in England then. After he accidentally bserved the Kenyans’ strict training rutines and dedicatin t their sprt, Farah said it was like a switch had been turned n in his head. He began eating healthy fds, ging t bed early, and training harder than he had ever trained in his life. As a result, Farah’s running career explded. He has wn seven wrld and Olympic titles in the 5000m and regularly beats Kenya’s tp runners!
Farah’s stry prves what Kenyans have knwn all alng. Regardless f genetics, their success wuld nt be pssible withut hard wrk, dedicatin, sacrifice, and mental tughness. Their “secret” is simple. Train hard, run fast, and never give up.
42.What interested the sprts scientists?
A.Kenyan sprts histry.
B.Kanlenjins’ running ability.
C.Kanlenjins’ training methds.
D.Kenyans’ enthusiasm fr sprt.
43.Accrding t Danish scientists, what leads t the Kanlenjins’ success?
A.Physical cnditin.B.Hard training.
C.Living style.D.Strng will.
44.Hw did Kenyan runners think abut Danish research result?
A.Cnvincing.B.Astnishing.
C.Unacceptable.D.Imprtant.
45.Why is M Farah’s stry mentined in the passage?
A.T shw running methds cunt.
B.T encurage British athletes.
C.T prve effrt pays ff.
D.T supprt gene thery.
