    S:I really enjyed my schl field trip in gegraphy. We saw s many beautiful things:a glacier that flwed like a river f ice thrugh a canyn that cut the muntains int tw parts. We als discvered a river which fell ff the muntain and became a wnderful waterfall. This was even mre exciting t see than the rapids where the water seemed t bil. Later we fllwed the river t a quieter plain and finally int a delta and the sea.

    S:OK.
    T:If yu can cmplete the sentence,just stand up and read the sentence t the whle class.
    S:He is s stubbrn that n ne can persuade him t d anything.
    T:Can yu think f the synnym f “stubbrn”?
    S:strng - minded.
    T:Yes,f curse here we can say “He is s strng-minded that n ne can persuade him t d anything.”
    But lk at this sentence “He is s ____________ that even if he knws he is wrng,he will nt admit.”
    Which wrd can be used here?
    S:Stubbrn.
    T:D yu think here we can als use strng-minded t replace “stubbrn”?
    S:N.
    T:Why?
    S:“Strng-minded” always has a gd meaning while “stubbrn” smetimes has sme bad sense.

    S:Yes. He is s strng-minded that the terrible weather will nt prevent him frm getting t the meeting n time.
    He is t stubbrn t take anyne’s advice.
    T:Gd. We shuld als pay attentin t the phrases with “persuade”,such as persuade sb.t d sth. and persuade sb. nt t d sth.

    Lk at Sentence 3,is it right?
    (3)My father persuaded me t take part in the summer camp,but I didn’t.
    S:Yes.
    T:N,it isn’t right. If ne’s persuasive actin desn’t wrk,we mustn’t use “persuade sb. t d”,but use “try t persuade sb.t d” r “advise sb.t d.” S can yu crrect Sentence 3?
    S:Yes. We shuld say:My father tried t persuade me t take part in the summer camp,but I didn’t.
    My father advised me t take part in the summer camp,but I didn’t.
    T:We als have “persuade/talk sb. int ding sth.” and “ persuade /talk sb. ut f ding sth.” Can yu use the tw phrases t change Sentence 1 and Sentence 2?
    S:OK,let me try. Sentence 1 can be turned t “My father persuaded me int taking part in the summer camp.”
    Sentence 2 can be turned t “His mther persuaded him ut f taking part in the summer camp.”
    T:Gd. Nw wh will read the secnd sentence?
    S:A determined persn always tries t finish the jb,n matter hw hard it is.
    T:What part f speech is the wrd “determined”?
    S:It is an adjective.
    T:Yes,we can say,a determined wman,which means a wman wh is strng-minded.
    We can als use the wrd as an adverbial;fr example,he left fr the west t seek his frtune,determined never t return unless he succeeded.
    S:I knw an adjective can als be used as predictive;can the wrd be used like this?
    T:Of curse,we have “ be determined t d sth.”
    eg,We are determined t help him ut f the difficulty.
    Hw can we say “我们决心学好英语”?
    S:We are determined t learn English well.
    T:Right. Nw the third sentence.
    S:Once she has made up her mind,nthing will change.
    T:D yu knw the meaning f “nce”?
    S:Yes.“一旦”.
    T:Can yu make several sentences?
    S1:Once I have mney,I will g abrad fr further study.
    S2.Once I will prmise yu,I will nt change my mind.
    T:D yu find any mistake in his sentence?
    T:Oh,yu can’t. Here “nce” leads a clause with cnditinal sense,s in the clause,we usually use present tense r past tense in place f present future tense r past future tense. Are yu clear nw?
    S2:Yes. I shuld say:Once I prmise yu,I will nt change my mind.
    S3:Once yu understand the rules,yu will find these exercises easy t d.
    T:S far,s gd. Wh can read Sentence 4?
    S:Is it prper fr us t take ff ur hats in church?
    T:Here are several sentences with the wrd “prper”. Please guess the meanings.
    Has he gt a prper suit fr the ceremny?
    He wrked ut the maths prblems in the prper way,s the teacher gave him full mark.
    We shuld behave prperly in public.
    S:The first prper means “suitable”. The secnd prper means “crrect”.
    T:“Prperly” is the adverbial frm f “prper”. Sentence 3 means “We shuld behave in a prper manner”.
    Nw lk at Sentence 5.
    S:He insisted that we find the surce f the truble as sn as pssible,Everyne agreed.
    T:“Insist” is als a very imprtant wrd. Yu shuld remember “ insist n ding sth.”.This phrase means “坚持做某事”.
    Hw can we say “我坚持他与我一起去参加舞会”?
    S:I insist n his ging t the ball with me.
    T:What abut “他坚决要求派往西藏”?
    S:He insisted n being sent t Tibet.
    T:Right. Nw listen t me mre carefully. What I will say is mre difficult.
    “Insist” can als be fllwed by an bject clause. If we want t declare a purpse that can nt be changed,we usually use subjunctive md,that is,use “shuld d” in the clause;if we want t describe a fact,we just use declarative md.
    Lk at the examples. The sentences we talked abut abve can be changed like this:
    I insist that he (shuld) g t the ball with me.
    He insisted that he (shuld) be sent t Tibet.
    Lk at anther example:他坚持说他没违法,不该被投进监狱。
    前半句他坚持的是一个事实,用陈述语气,后半句表示他坚持不该投进监狱,要用虚拟语气。S the crrect sentence shuld be:He insisted that he didn’t break the law and shuldn’t be put in prisn.
    Similarly,hw can we say “他坚持说他没生病,不用送医院”.
    S:He insisted that he was nt ill and shuldn’t be sent t hspital.
    T:Perfect. Then let’s shift t sentence 6.
    S:D yu remember every detail f the stry yu have just read?
    T:Detail means “细节,琐碎的事”.Whenever we d anything,we shuld be careful. That means we shuld care abut details. And yu had better knw the phrase “in detail”,fr example,“Fr fear that I culdn’t understand the maths prblem,he explained it t me in detail.” Nw,the seventh sentence.
    S:I wanted t pay the train fare,but my friend insisted. Finally I gave in.
    T:T pay the train fare means t pay the train ticket. In the previus part,we came acrss ne-way fare,which means
    “the mney paid fr a single ticket”. Please remember these useful phrases:
    ne-way ticket=a single ticket 单程票
    the return ticket 回程票
    the rund-trip ticket 来回票
    Lk at these phrases with “give”
    give up ding 放弃做某事
    give in (t sb./sth.) 屈服于
    give ut 筋疲力尽
    give away 捐赠,泄露

    can表示可能
    “Can” is usually used in a negative sentence r a questin,fr example,
    (1)A:The student standing there cannt be Wei Fang,fr she has gne t Shanghai.
    B:Then wh can it be?
    A:It must be her twin sister.
    But here why can “can” be used in narrative sentence?Here “can” 表示一时之可能。
    (2)It is always very warm in Suth China in winter,but smetimes,is can be very cld.
    (3)Li Ming is always a lvely by,but smetimes,he can be trublesme.
    Step 4 Imprtant structure
    T:在英语中,为了强调句子的某一部分(通常为主语、宾语或状语),常用“It is/was+被强调部分+that/wh...”,当被强调部分指人时,如为主语,可用wh,如为宾语则可用whm。如:
    I saw Tm in the street this mrning.
    可用强调结构来分别强调句中的主语、宾语、地点状语或时间状语。
    (1)It was I that/wh saw Tm in the street this mrning.
    (2)It was Tm that/whm I saw in the street this mrning.
    (3)It was in the street that(不用where) I saw Tm this mrning.
    (4)It was this mrning that (不用when)I met Tm in the street.
    T:Nw turn t Page 18.Lk at the seventh line in the secnd paragraph. Wuld yu translate the sentence “Our jurney wuld begin at an altitude f mre than 5000 meters.”

    备课资料
    1.It 强调句型的注意点:
    (1)当原句的时态为表示现在的各种时态时,用It is...;当原句的时态为表示过去的各种时态时,则用It was...。
    (2)当被强调的对象指人时,可用wh/whm 代替that;但当被强调的是地点、时间、原因、方式等状语时,决不能用where,when,why,hw 等来替换。
    (3)当被强调部分为代词时,如是主语就用代词的主格,如是宾语则用宾格。
    (4)当被强调部分为原句的主语时,that句中谓语动词应在人称与数上与它保持一致。

    It was in the street that I met Tm yesterday.(不可换作where)
    It was yesterday that I met Tm in the street.(不可换作 when)

    2.may/might/must/can/culd 表示猜测的用法
    may表示可能性。
    (1)当表示对目前情况的猜测时,常用may + d/be。
    He may be Li Ming’s father.
    他可能是李明的父亲。
    (2)当表示对目前正在进行的动作猜测时,常用may + be ding。
    It’s 12 ’clck. He may be having his lunch.
    现在12 点了,他可能在吃饭。
    (3)当表示对过去发生的动作猜测时,常用may + have dne。
    He didn’t cme n time. He may have been caught in the traffic jam.
    他没准时来,可能遇到交通阻塞了。
    当表示对某种情况的猜测很有把握时,可把may 换成 must,当表示不太有把握时,则换成might。
    It must have rained last night,fr the grund was wet when I pened the dr this mrning.
    昨晚肯定下雨了,因为今晨我开门时地面是湿的。
    I gt up late this mrning,I might have turned ff the alarm clck and gne t sleep again.
    今晨我起晚了,可能我关了闹钟却又睡着了。
    在否定句中,则需把may/might/must 换成can’t 或 culdn’t,译成“不可能”;在疑问句中则用can 或 culd 替换,译成“有……的可能吗?”。
