    Step 1 Lead-in
    (Teacher shws a series f pictures f sme disasters n the screen, let the students talk abut their feelings r anything they feel abut the pictures.)
    (The pictures are: fire, hurricane, typhn, tsunami, earthquake…)
    T: In this unit, we learn a lt abut disasters. We knw disaster is nt a gd thing t us. We ften feel sad r srry if a disaster happens.
    T: Right nw, yu have just seen sme f the disasters. D yu feel wrried abut these refugees?
    Ss: Yes.
    Step 2 Discussin
    T: Yes, everybdy will feel srry fr them. But wh is the mst wrried peple when a disaster happens?
    Ss: families and friends / gvernment and president / ……..
    T: Suppse, there is an earthquake happen smewhere in China, and yu have a friend happens t be there. Yu are very wrried. What will yu d when yu hear that an earthquake happens there? (Let the students discuss with their partner)
    Ss: I will feel very wrried. I will make sure my friend is Ok as sn as pssible. I will make a call t see if he is Ok.
    T: Again, suppse yu are a president f a cuntry, and an earthquake happens in yur cuntry. What will yu d?
    Ss: It is my duty t cmfrt the refugees and the sciety. S first I will make a live speech t the whle cuntry, telling my peple that I knw it and I will try my best t rganize the rescue wrk and the rebuilding wrk after the earthquake.
    T: Yes, yu are very clever. In fact, a real president will d just as yu said ----- t make a speech. Nw just let’s listen t a real speech made by President Bush after a big earthquake hit India n the first day f New Year.
    (Play the tape recrd fr the students)
    Step 3 Speech
    T: Right nw we’ve just listened t a speech made by President Bush. D yu knw smething abut hw t make a speech? Can yu tell me when shuld we make a speech?
    Ss: a speech cmpetitin / electin / the beginning f a new year / the pening f sme activity / anniversary…..
    T: Yes, peple need t make speeches at thse times. Then d yu knw hw t make a speech? What shuld we cntain when we make a speech?
    Ss: Intrductin: Give a strng first impressin & preview yur speech
    Bdy: Explain yur ideas and supprt them
    Cnclusin: Review yur speech and leave a lasting final impressin.
    Step 4 Text
    T: It seems that yu knw a lt abut making a speech. I remember we say that we may need t make a speech when it is sme imprtant anniversary.
    T: Yu knw 2006 is the 30th anniversary f Tang Shan Earthquake. Here is an invitatin, inviting yu t make a speech abut it. Yu can lk at the letter n yur text bk.
    T: Yu can include these pints in yur speech;
    thank Mr Zhang Sha and the city gvernment fr inviting yu t speak
    thank the visitrs, especially the survivrs
    thank thse wh wrked hard t save survivrs
    list sme f the things the wrkers did t help the survivrs
    thank thse wh wrked hard t build the city
    describe yur feeling abut the city, which is knwn as the “Brave City f China”.
    encurage the peple t be always prud f their city.
    thank the visitrs fr listening t yur speech.
    T: S try t give a speech, using these pints. Nw I will give yu 5miniutes t finish the speech.

    T: Times up. Have yu finished yur speech? Ok, I think it is time fr us t hld a speech cntest. We have 4 grups in ur class. Each grup, please chse ne cntestant t represent yur grup and jin the class speech cntest. …, …and … will be the judges.
    (Ask each grup t give a speech and the chsen judges will chse the winner.)
    T: Cngratulatins t the winner!
    Step 6 Cnclusin
    T: In this lessn we learned a lt abut speech and we als made a speech by urselves. S d yu knw hw t make a speech nw?
    T: At the end f the class, let’s enjy a very famus speech in human histry.
