    Ss: Yes.
    T: Where have yu been befre?
    S1: I’ve been t Beijing, and Huangshan.
    T: Hw did yu find yur travel t Beijing?
    S1: Very interesting. It helped me learn abut the histry f Beijing. As the capital f ur mtherland, it is really beautiful. The deepest impressin n me is the visit t the Great Wall and the Frbidden City. But it was a pity that time was t shrt. We had n chance t g sightseeing in ther places f interest.
    S2: I went t Xiameng last year. I think the travel t Xiameng was busy. We visited many places, such as Wuyi Muntain, Putu Temple, Ningb and s n. Thugh we had a gd time, in fact, mst f the time was spent n trains. That was bring and tiring. I felt a bit srry.
    T: It’s a pity. If yu had made a prper plan befre traveling, yur jurney wuld have been much mre cmfrtable and interesting. D yu think s?
    S2: I agree with yu.
    T: Hw d yu like travel?
    S3: In my pinin, travel is interesting and helpful. When I travel I can learn a lt. I can enjy lcal custms, cultures and beautiful scenery.
    T: I als think s. Well, after we chse a place t travel, we must chse a kind f transprt which kind f transprt d yu prefer t use: bus r train? Nw, please wrk with yur partners and think abut the advantages and disadvantages f each frm f transprt and fill in the chart n page 17.
    Five minutes later, check the Ss’ answers
    T: Ok. We’ve weighed the advantages and disadvantages f each frm f transprt. Nw, imagine that yu plan t spend a hliday. Chse a place yu want t visit. Think abut the fare fr different kinds f transprt and decide hw t get there. Yu may nt knw the exact fare, but yu can guess hw much the fare is. Please have a discussin with yur partners and then decide hw t get there.
    Tw minutes later, ask a pair f students t reprt their decisins.
    T: Since yu’ve decided hw t get there, I’d like yu t talk mre abut yur hlidays. Then use these questins n the screen t make a dialgue abut yur hlidays with yur partners.

    Step 2 Pre-reading
    T: Well dne! D yu like traveling alng a river, a great river?
    Ss: Yes.
    T: By the way, what rle des a river play in peple’s life? In ther wrds, hw d peple wh live alng a river use it?
    S1: Peple use a river t irrigate their fields.
    S2: Peple use a river t make electricity.
    S3: Peple g swimming in the river in summer. They can flat wd dwn a river.
    S4: They can travel alng a river.
    T: Yu are right. As we knw the wrld has many rivers. It even has many great rivers. What makes a river great, in yur pinin?
    S4: A great river is very imprtant.
    S5: A great river is very large and lng
    Teacher shws a chart with sme great rivers in the wrld
    T: Nw please lk at the chart. In the left clumn are names f sme great rivers. In the right clumn are the lcatins where the rivers lie. Please match them.
    After Ss cmplete the chart, Teacher can shw the crrect answers in anther chart. Then Teacher shuld ask Ss sme mre questins abut the rivers.
    T: Des anyne knw anything else abut the rivers?
    S6: The Seine River. It lcates in France. It’s the mther river f France.
    S7: I knw smething abut the Nile. It’s the wrld’s lngest river. It flws thrugh Egypt.
    S8: I have sme idea abut the Amazn. It’s the wrld’s largest river. It’s in Brazil.

    S9: I’d like t travel dwn the Seine. S I can see much beautiful scenery in Eurpe. I can enjy the Eiffel Twer.

    S11: Yes. But I nly knw it lcates in Sutheast Asia.
    T: It desn’t matter. Nw let’s lk at the map n Page 18. Will yu please find ut the cuntries that the Mekng River flws thrugh?
    Ss: China, Vietnam and Las.
    Step 3 Reading and cmprehending
    T: Great. Nw let’s read a passage abut a jurney dwn the Mekng River.
    Please read the passage and get a main idea f the text. Let’s learn mre abut the Mekng River. Then I’d like t ask yu sme questins n the text.
    Shw the questins n the screen. Give the Ss five minutes t read the passage and then check their answers
    T: Yu knw Wang Kun and Wang Wei are brther and sister. What was their idea f a gd trip?
    S1: They have dreamed abut taking a great bike trip.
    T: Wh planned the trip t the Mekng?
    S2: Wang Wei.
    T: What abut Questin 3?
    S3 The surce f the Mekng River is in Qinghai Prvince and it enters the Suth China Sea.
    T: Hw abut Questin 4?
    S4: We can see a glacier, deep valleys, waterfalls, hills and plains.
    T: What difficulties did Wang Kun and Wang Wei find abut their jurney?
    S5: We knw that the travelers had t climb ver a Tibetan muntain and pass thrugh deep valleys.
    T: Yu are right. Have yu ever thught f traveling by bike?
    Ss: Yes/n.
    T: What d yu think abut Wang Kun and Wang Wei?
    S6: I think they are energetic and determined.
    T: Quite right. Nw I’d like yu t tell Wang Wei’s and Wang Kun’s similar and different attitudes abut the trip. Yu can have a discussin with yur partners. And then fill in the chart. By the way, d yu knw the wrd “attitude”? An attitude is what a persn thinks abut smething. Let’s start.
    Tw minutes is enugh. Teacher checks the answers and writes them dwn n the blackbard while the students are telling their answers.
    T: D yu agree with them?
    S: Yes.
    T: OK. Anther questin. Wh d yu think was right abut the trip? Why?
    S: I think Wang Kun was right, because if it is t cld and t high, the trip will be hard. Peple will have sme difficulty in breathing at a high altitude. Wherever we g we need an atlas s that we will nt lse ur way.
    Step 4 Explanatin
    During the prcedure Teacher will ask Ss t read the text carefully and pay attentin t the wrds in bld in the text and underline the sentences they dn’t understand. Then Teacher will d sme explanatins, deal with language prblems in the text, and at the same time mentin Ss t refer t Ntes 5 t10 n P 81. Next Teacher plays the tape.
    T: Well, everyne. Let’s read the text again. Please read carefully and fcus ur attentin n the details and the sentences yu dn’t understand. Underline the sentences yu dn’t understand. Please g ahead.
    Five minutes later.
    T: Finished? D yu have any prblems?
    S1: Yes. In the sentence “She insisted that we find the surce f the river and begin ur jurney there.” the verb “insist” is used in the past definite tense, while “find” is in the riginal frm f a verb. It seems that they dn’t agree with each ther.
    S2: I dn’t understand the sentence “She gave me a determined lk – the kind that said she wuldn’t change her mind.” What’s the meaning f “the kind”?
    T: O K. let me d sme explanatins and deal with the difficult language pints.

    Wang Kun: Well. We shuld plan it well.
    Wang Wei: Let me plan ur schedule. I can rganize the trip prperly.
    T: Gd. Sit dwn, please. Nw it’s time t deal with Exercise 5 n page 19. Cmpare the fllwing sentences with different stresses and explain the meaning. Fllw the example.

That is: befre traveling we shuld make gd preparatins—making a plan, decide the place t visit and get enugh infrmatin abut the place. With full preparatins we’ll have a gd time during the trip.
