    从容说课
    This is the fifth teaching perid f this unit. As usual, the teacher shuld check the students’ hmewrk and ffer chances fr the students t g ver what they learned in the last perid at the beginning f the class.
    In this perid, the teaching emphasis will be put n develping the students’ reading ability by reading extensively and getting them learning t use sme reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and s n. As t new wrds and phrases, the teacher can just find thse the students feel mst difficult and help them t understand. That’s enugh here.
    We will deal with tw parts: Reading and discussing n Pages 38-39 and Reading Task n Pages 73-74. The purpse f Reading and discussing n Pages 38-39 is t finish the stry f Elias and explain what happened t him after he was sent t Rbben Island. This prved t be a very hard time in his life and he never wrked again until Nelsn Mandela and his gvernment came int pwer. At that pint ANC supprters wh had suffered like Elias were given jbs and pensins by the gvernment t make up fr the years f suffering. In rder t lead in the tpic f this passage, the teacher can first talk abut and discuss smething mentined in Elias’ Stry. Then ask the students t find the answers by skimming and t lcate particular infrmatin by scanning. While checking their answers with the whle class, deal with language prblems the students can’t wrk ut by themselves. Fr Reading Task n Pages 73-74, it prvides an pprtunity fr the students t think abut a persn r a situatin in different respects. This is very imprtant as a lt f university wrk and research needs students wh can lk at different pints f view and cme t a gd cnclusin. In additin, it means that they must als give reasns fr their chice and pssibly argue that ne side r the ther is wrng. Students are asked t give their views f Bill Gates befre reading. This is t see what viewpints they have already. Mst will prbably think Bill Gates is a gd man because they have nly heard gd things abut him. In the tw passages they will read bth gd and bad things abut Bill Gates. D these readings change their minds r d students remain unmved by them? After reading, ask the students fr their reactins again. They shuld give a reasn fr any change f mind r fr staying with the same pinin. This is ne f the mst imprtant exercises in this unit and it shuld be treated seriusly.
    As t Speaking Task n Page 74, its purpse is fr the students t re-examine what qualities they think makes a great persn. It is an infrmal assessment f whether they have understd the pint f the unit. It als prvides them with the pprtunity t cnsider what pririties they think are imprtant in a persn. Remind the students t use the expressins set ut in Talking. In rder t finish this part, have a debate n whether Bill Gates is a great man r nt.

    Talk and discuss with the students: As we knw, in rder t supprt Mandela, Elias helped him blw up sme gvernment buildings. Can yu imagine what wuld happen t him if he was caught? Tday we are ging t read anther passage The Rest f Elias’ Stry. After reading, yu’ll knw what actually happened t him.

    1. Skimming fr the answers:
    What happened t Elias?
    Can yu describe Rbben Island?
    Give the students 3 minutes t read the passage fast. Then check the answers with the class.
    2. Scanning fr detailed infrmatin
    Give the students 6 minutes t read the passage again, and make ntes abut what happened t Elias in prisn. Fill in the frm

    Several minutes later, check the answers with the whle class and deal with any language prblems that students can’t understand.
    3. Discuss the questins in pairs.
    1) What wuld yu have dne if yu were Elias?

    4. Sme imprtant language pints:
    1) I felt bad the first time I talked t a grup.
    the first time在句子中起连词的作用,引导时间状语从句,可译为“第一次……的时候”,the secnd time, the third time. . . 依此类推。

    we culd find是省略了关系代词that的定语从句,修饰anything。t make candles和t see the wrds是动词不定式,作目的状语。

    Tell the students: Suppse yu are Elias and wrk as a tur guide n Rbben Island. Yur partner is a turist wh is interested in the island and Nelsn Mandela’s life. He is nw asking yu the fllwing questins.

    Give the students several minutes t practice their interviews. The teacher can walk arund the classrm and see whether the students need sme help. Then ask sme students t perfrm in the frnt f the class.

    Turist: Hw did yu get t knw Nelsn Mandela?
    Elias: It was in 1950. I was wrking as a miner in Jhannesburg but I hadn’t a passbk t live there. S I went t Mandela’s law firm t ask fr advice.
    Turist: Can yu explain t me sme f Nelsn Mandela’s plitical ideas r beliefs?
    Elias: Yes. He fund that we black peple were nt treated as equally as the white peple and he wuld fight fr ur rights. Hwever, he said that we shuld fight in a peaceful way. Only when this was nt allwed did we decide t answer vilence with vilence.
    Turist: Hw did he help yu thrugh yur life?
    Elias: First, he helped me t get the crrect papers t stay in Jhannesburg and keep my jb as I mentined abve. Then he taught me t read and write when I was in prisn. This is very imprtant t me because it enables me t get mre jb pprtunities. Later he gave me my present jb.
    Turist: What was life like n Rbben Island?
    Elias: Miserable and cruel. The guards and sldiers treated us badly, beat us vilently fr n reasns and insulted us in different ways.
    Turist: Hw did yu manage t study n Rbben Island?
    Elias: We studied during the lunch breaks and the evenings when we shuld have be en asleep. We read bks under ur blankets and used anything we culd find t make candles t see the wrds.
    Turist: What kinds f jb have yu ever dne?
    Elias: A miner, an ffice wrker and nw a tur guide.
    Turist: What d yu think f yur present jb?
    Elias: I like it very much. And I am prud t shw visitrs ver the prisn, fr I helped t make ur peple free in ur wn land.
