This is the third teaching perid f this unit. The teacher shuld first check the students’ hmewrk and ffer chances fr the students t review what they learned in the secnd perid.
The emphasis in this perid will be laid n the imprtant new wrds, expressins and sentence patterns. In rder t make the students understand these pints thrughly, the teacher can first get the students t understand their meanings in the cntext, then give sme explanatins abut them, later ffer sme practices t let the students knw their usages. Sme wrds and expressins, such as include, cmmand, request, recgnize, because f, such as, play a rle in, etc. are very useful and imprtant. The teacher ught t pay mre attentin t them and design special exercises.
Als in this unit, there are sme wrds which shw directins, such as western, eastern, Midwestern, suthern and nrthwestern. The teacher can first get students t review east, west, suth and nrth they learned in Junir middle schl, then enlarge them and design situatins t make students master them by games.
At the end f the class, the teacher can make the students d mre exercises fr cnslidatin. In ding s, they can learn, grasp and use these imprtant language pints well.

→Step 5 Analyzing sme imprtant and difficult sentences
1. Native English speakers can understand each ther even if they dn’t speak
the same kind f English.
这里的even if they dn’t speak the same kind f English是让步状语从句,整个句子可以翻译成“以英语作为母语的人,即使他们所讲的语言不尽相同,也可以互相交流”。
even if等于even thugh,意思是“即使、尽管”,引导让步状语从句。
Even if we have learned “even thugh” we still find it difficult t use.
尽管我们学过“even thugh”,但我们还是发现运用它很难。
Mr. Smith likes t help us even if/thugh he is very busy.
史密斯先生虽然很忙,他还是愿意帮我们。
2. It became less like German, and mre like French because thse wh ruled England at that time spke French.
这里的because thse wh ruled England at that time spke French是原因状从句,wh ruled England at that time是定语从句,整个句子可以翻译成“它(英语)不那么像德语,而更像法语了,因为那时的英国的统治者讲法语”。
3. Believe it r nt, there is n such a thing as Standard English.
这里的Believe it r nt意思是“信不信由你、不管你信不信”,通常在句子中作插入语,有逗号和句子分开。such(. . . )as在这里相当于like或fr example。整个句子可以翻译成“信不信由你,(世界上)根本没有什么标准英语”。

句子中base sth. n sth. (t use sth. as grunds, evidence, etc. fr sth. else),意思是“以某事物为另一事物的根据、证据等”,也常用be based n的形式。因此,该句可翻译成“实际上,当时的英语更多的是以德语为基础的,而现代英语不是”。
