The idea f “greenhuse gases” ges back t 1824,when Jseph Furier wndered what was regulating the earth’s temperature.Furier cncluded that the atmsphere must be respnsible fr cntaining the heat absrbed frm the sun and described it as a bx with a glass lid:As light shines thrugh the glass, the inside gets warmer as the lid traps the heat.As Furier’s ideas spread,it came t be called “the greenhuse effect”.
Scientists cntinued t study the greenhuse effect.Until a Swedish chemist named Svante Arrhenius came alng, scientists understd hw glbal warming actually wrks. After years f wrk,Arrhenius determined that the level f carbn dixide in the atmsphere did in fact have a direct effect n glbal temperature.
Arrhenius fund that CO2,and ther gases trap radiatin, which warms the atmsphere.Arrhenius was the first t suspect that burning cal culd cntribute t the greenhuse effect. But Arrhenius welcmed the warming effect n the planet. At a lecture later that year,Arrhenius nted that creatures f a warmer earth “might live under a milder sky and in less barren surrundings”.
While Arrhenius’ findings wn him the 1903 Nbel Prize in Chemistry, scientists kept debating whether the greenhuse effect was increasing until 1950,when researchers finally began t find strng data t supprt it.By the end f the 1950s,American scientists had been sunding the alarm n the lng-term cnsequences f climate change.Climate change research has cme a lng way since Furier first described the greenhuse effect.Maybe Arrhenius shuld have been mre careful f what he wished fr.
