The cmmn use f Ggle Maps, a navigatin(导航) app n smartphnes, raises the age-ld questin we meet with any technlgy: What skills are we lsing? But als, crucially: What capabilities are we gaining?
Peple wh are gd at finding their way arund r gd at using paper maps usually experience lts f cnfusin with digital maps. Fr example, they may mess up the directin f nrth and suth, and yu can see nly a small sectin at a time. But cnsider what digital navigatin aids have meant fr smene like me. Despite being a frequent traveler, I’m s terrible at finding my way that I still use Ggle Maps almst every day in the small twn where I have lived fr many years. What seems unnecessary t sme has been a significant expansin f my wn capabilities.
Part f the prblem is that reading paper maps requires a specific skill set. There is nthing natural abut them. In many develped natins, street names and huse numbers are meaningful, and instructins such as “g nrth fr three blcks and then west” usually make sense. In Istanbul, in cntrast, where I grew up, nne f thse hld true. Fr ne thing, the lcals rarely use street names, and huse numbers ften aren’t sequential either because after buildings 1, 2 and 3 were built, smene squeezed in anther huse between 1 and 2, and nw that’s 4. But then 5 will maybe get built after 3, and 6 will be between 2 and 3. Besides, the city is full f winding and ancient streets that meet with newer nes. Therefre, instructins as simple as “g nrth” wuld require a helicpter. I gt lst all the time.
But since I used Ggle Maps, I travel with a lt mre cnfidence, and my wrld has pened up. And because I g t mre places mre cnfidently, I believe my native navigatin skills have smewhat imprved, t.
That brings me back t my riginal questin: while we ften lse sme skills after seeking cnvenience frm technlgy, this new setup may als allw us t expand ur capabilities and d smething mre cnfidently. Maybe when technlgy clses a dr, we shuld als lk fr the drs it pens.
12.Hw des the authr feel abut Ggle Maps?
    A.Cnfusing.B.Unnecessary.C.Cmplicated.D.Helpful.
13.Which cntributes t the difficulty f finding ways in Istanbul?
    A.Strange street names.B.Ordinary paper maps.
    C.Cmplex rad arrangements.D.Lack f rad instructins.
14.What des the underlined wrd “sequential” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A.In a fixed rder.B.In gd cnditin.
C.Of great imprtance.D.Of the same kind.
15.What clumn f a newspaper may this passage belng t?
    A.Fashin.B.Opinin.C.Sciety.D.Gegraphy.
