As early as the Warring States perid, the magnetic frce f magnetite was discvered, and a srt f instrument was made f magnetite t shw directins. This was certainly the earliest cmpass in the wrld. During the Han Dynasty, peple made a spn-like cmpass. A
small spn, made f magnetite, with a very smth bttm, was placed n a square cpper plate. The center f the plate was grund smth t make it easy fr the spn t mve. When the spn, after it was turned, came t a stp, its handle wuld pint t the suth. This frm f cmpass was further imprved during the Sng Dynasty. Peple made irn needles and rubbed them n a piece f magnetite, s that they wuld becme magnetic. Then ne such needle was hung with a thin thread, r put n smething light that flated n the water in a bwl. The latter was the cmpass that was first used in navigatin. China was the first cuntry in the wrld t use the cmpass n sea-ging ships. Histrical recrds shw that in 1099-1102 the cmpass was used n ships sailing t r frm Guangzhu.
It was generally believed that paper was first made by a man called Cai Lun in 105 during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Hwever, in recent decades, earlier paper made during the Western Han Dynasty was unearthed in Xinjiang, Shaanxi and Gansu. S it is reasnable t believe that paper was invented in the Western Han and was imprved by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han. In later perids, different materials were used fr making paper, and its quality became better and better. The famus Xuan paper, prduced in Xuanzhu, Anhui Prvince, first appeared in the Tang Dynasty. Its quality was s gd that all calligraphers and painters liked t use it. Even tday it is still cnsidered the best kind f paper fr calligraphy and traditinal Chinese painting.
During the Sng Dynasty, bamb began t be used fr making paper, and the utput f bamb paper increased rapidly. In 751, during the reign f Tang Xuanzng, the Chinese technique f making paper was intrduced t the Arab wrld, and frm there t Eurpe in 1150. In ther wrds, Eurpe knew hw t make paper abut a thusand years later than China.
