M: I doubt it. When they say they’re filming for a week, it takes them at least ten days to get out of here.

Text 10
M: The first time we meet a person, it is often difficult to carry on a conversation. Let us suppose we are introduced to someone at a party. One good first question would be to ask the person how he or she knows the host or hostess. If the person answers formally by calling you Mr or Ms, ⑱you could then say something like ‘please call me Susan’. This could immediately make the conversation more informal. In addition, if you are asked a question, try not to answer with only one or two words. Look at the person in the eyes ⑲and stand close enough to show you are interested in what he or she is saying.
Follow this plan, and you’ll probably soon find something you are both interested in, such as a recent movie or a TV program, certain types of food or sports. ⑳ Stay away from subjects that could cause arguments, such as political or religious topics. ⑰If the person is new to your town, you can introduce him or her to some of your other friends who are present. Anyhow, in a few minutes, both of you will feel much more relaxed and can enjoy each other’s company.
17. If a man is new to your town, you can______.
A. give him some presents
B. talk about your favorite movies
C. introduce him to some of your other friends
18. How can people make a conversation more informal immediately?
A. By looking other people in the eyes.
B. By asking others to use their first name.
C. By answering with only one or two words.
19. Why should people stand close enough to others in a conversation?
A. To show their interest.
B. To hear the words clearly.
C. To create a relaxing atmosphere.
20. Why should people avoid political or religious subjects?
A. They make people feel bored.
B. They may cause disagreements.
C. They are difficult to understand.

It was September 5, 2009. Lexi Youngberg, then 16, was on vacation in Spring Lake, Michigan. She was riding on a small boat with her friends, Robby and Kaitlin, when a motorboat crashed into them. The sound was so loud that other boaters heard it over the roar (轰鸣声) of their engines. The teen boy who had been driving the motorboat stepped on the gas by mistake. Kaitlin, 23, had only small cuts, but Robby, 15, had been badly cut by the propeller (螺旋桨). And Lexi was floating facedown in the water. When one boater swam to Lexi, she was breathing. However, she was unconscious. She had a deep cut on her head. And the lower part of her left leg, just below the knee, was gone. A doctor rode up in another boat and tried to save Robby, but it was too late.
For Lexi, the good news is that she survived while the bad news is that she lost one of her legs forever. When Lexi looked at her swollen leg, she felt hopeless. But as time passed, Lexi began to feel stronger. She was grateful that her life had been spared, and she decided to make the most of it. At the end of November 2009, Lexi met with Dr. John Hardy, who was an expert at making artificial legs. She hoped he would help her get back to doing the things she loved.
Three years after the accident, Lexi moved on with her life. In spring 2011, she joined a soccer team in her school. That fall, she started college. Lexi is thankful that she can still do the things she loves. One day, she wants to be a physical therapist and work with those with disabilities. But first she plans to compete in the Paralympics. Whatever Lexi decides to do, one thing is certain: Nothing is going to get in her way.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame(受责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.
25. The main reason for one’s poor memory is that ______.
A. his father or mother may have a poor memory
B. He does not use his name or legs for some time
C. his memory is not often used
D. he can’t read or write
26. If you do not use your arms or legs for some time ______.
A. you can’t use them any more
B. they will become stronger
C. they become weak and won’t become strong until you use them again
D. they will become neither stronger nor weaker
27. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Your memory works in the same way as your arms or legs.
B. Your memory, like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you don’t give it enough chance for practice.
C. Don’t learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory.
D. A good memory comes from more practice.
C
Recently I came in contact with the true meaning of love. That would have been, Kane, a boy. Kane was the two-year-old son of Jolene, my new neighbor.
At a glance Kane was a sight. He’d been born with hard sticks for legs. And on that morning I witnessed the effect that Kane’s physical shortcomings had on his family. But I also witnessed much more than that.
I saw an extraordinary family that embraced this special child, a family that wouldn’t allow Kane to know he was different. Jolene had constructed a small cart just a few inches off the floor for his son to get around. Using his hands to move about, Kane moved the cart to “go to” any place just as everyone else was able to do. Kane worked that little cart like a master. Kane was a vital focus of the entire family. He was more than just a member of the family; he was the soul. This child was the driver, the motivator(让人积极进取的人), and the founder of much of the interaction.
Much later in my life, I came to realize that God had sent this child to help some of us who just weren’t getting what love was all about. Even with my limited capacity for understanding at the time that Kane was a highly developed spirit with great wisdom.
Kane demanded attention, but not because of his mobility challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no challenges or shortcomings. The truth is that he received attention because he was alive and real and had so much to offer.
Kane was and still is a lot of warm and powerful energy sent to us all, so we might learn that love surpasses(超越, 胜过) all things. Kane, a fragile yet lovely baby, was here to teach us all an important lesson. And at the age of two he did just that.
28. What did the author think of Kane’s family members?
A. It was ridiculous for them to make a cart for Kane.
B. They were greatly brave to face all the difficulties.
C. They were strange because they locked Kane at home.
D. It was respectable for them to start their own business.
29. How did Kane “go” everywhere he wanted to go?
A. By moving his cart with his own hands.
B. By asking his father to lead him ahead with a stick.
C. By asking his grandparents to push him everywhere.
D. With the help of a babysitter for him.
30. Kane needed attention because he wanted to show ______.
A. he can challenge his difficulty in moving
B. he had challenges or shortcomings in his life
C. he had the power to prove he was capable too
D. he himself needed to be looked after by others
31. What can we learn from Kane’s story?
A. Love me, love my dog.
B. Pure gold fears no fire.
C. Love is above all things.
D. Many hands make light work.
D
Laysan ducks(莱岛鸭), one of the world’s most endangered water birds, live only on the Hawaiian group of islands. For 150 years, Laysan ducks have been limited to an area of about 4 square kilometers on Laysan Islands in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. In 2004 and 2005, in an effort to rebuild the population, biologists released 42 Laysan ducks on Midway Atoll Island, which is located one day’s boat ride from Laysan.
By 2007, a population of 200 ducks had been well established on Midway. However, in August 2008, more than half of the Midway duck population — 181 ducks, were lost to a disease that lasted 30 days.
“Disturbingly, 3 ducks were also infected with a special virus, ” said Work, a researcher of the USGS at the Wildlife Disease Association Conference. “This virus can cause deadly diseases for birds. ” Work notes that this virus was either spread to Midway during the move of the ducks from Laysan, or arrived with migratory(迁徙的)water birds, although preventive treatment had been taken.
Either way, says Work, this event shows the risk of disease to birds that are limited to small island populations. There are many challenges related to managing these relocated endangered species. Frequent population monitoring is needed in order to notice a disease in its early stage. Also, there should be wetland monitoring and management to prevent the possible effects of bird diseases on endangered Laysan ducks. Furthermore, disease risks need to be closely examined when the ducks’ living area changes, as well as when climate changes.
32. Biologists released Laysan ducks on Midway Atoll Island in order to ______.
A. find out the living habits of Laysan ducks
B. increased the number of Laysan ducks
C. keep Laysan ducks away from a disease
D. avoid over-population of Laysan ducks on Laysan Island
33. According to the first two paragraphs, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. There are 200 Laysan ducks on Midway after August 2008.
B. Laysan ducks live in no other places outside the Hawaiian Islands.
C. Laysan ducks have lived on Midway Atoll Island for 150 years.
D. Laysan Island is to the northwest of the Hawaiian Islands.
34. In 2008, Laysan ducks died in great numbers because of ______.
A. water birds’ migration
B. climate change
C. a disease
D. living area changes
35. According to Work, we can learn that ______.
A. no measures were taken to prevent the birds getting diseases in 2008
B. at least 3 ducks surely died of a disease in 2008
C. a special virus may have been carried by Laysan ducks to Midway
D. it was migratory water birds that carried a special virus to Laysan Island

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Why do people like what they like? Scientists have taken on the task of solving this mystery(奥秘)for ages. In the 1960s, psychologist Robert Zajonc conducted a series of experiments where he showed people nonsense words and random shapes. Afterward he asked his subjects which they preferred out of everything they had been shown in study.
After study, people always chose the words and shapes they had seen the most. Their preference was for familiarity.
This discovery was one of the most important findings in modern psychology. But the preference for familiarity has clear limits. People get tired of even their favorite songs and movies. On the one hand, humans seek familiarity, because it makes them feel safe. On the other hand, people love the thrill of something new. This change between familiarity and discovery affects us all the time—not just our preferences for pictures and songs, but also our preferences for ideas and even people.
For that reason, the power of familiarity seems to be strongest when a person isn’t expecting it. The opposite is also true: A surprise seems to work best when it contains some familiarity. Nobody knows this better than Raymond Loewy, who is considered to be the “father of industrial design”. He had a theory that he said could help artists sell anything to anyone. He called it “MAYA—Most Advanced Yet Acceptable”“To sell something surprising, make it familiar; and to sell something familiar, make it surprising, ” he said.
One of Loewy’s final tasks was to add an element(要素)of familiarity to a truly new invention: NASA’s first space station. Loewy’s biggest contribution to the space station was that he insisted NASA install a window with a view of Earth. Today, tens of millions of people have seen this small detail in films about astronauts. It is hard to imagine a more perfect example of MAYA: a window to a new world can also show you home.
