My mther was an excellent husekeeper. She had a few surgeries ver the years, and befre each ne she’d have my father mve the stve ut frm the wall s she culd clean behind it. It wuld have been hard fr her t relax in the hspital if she knew there were dust balls behind the stve.
The entire huse was tidy and rganized—there was a place fr everything and everything was in its place. Mm wuld hang the sheets utside t dry rather than inside the huse. And if strm cluds gathered, she wuld run utside, race dwn t the sheets, thrw them int a bag, and then race back t the huse as the rain started, satisfied that a majr catastrphe had been avided. Thrughut ur entire childhds, my sisters and I were spiled with fresh bedding and ckies fresh frm the ven.
There’s smething beautiful abut freshness, like the beginning f a schl year, the start f a marriage, the birth f a child, mving t a new place, r starting a new jb.
Freshness is like pening a new calendar that isn’t yet filled with neglected tasks. A new year always means a chance at a fresh start. But the questin is, hw d we chse t make this new start?
Maybe I need t d sme husekeeping myself. A gd sweeping usually leads t finding sme interesting things—an ld memry r tw and new hbbies that fell by the wayside. Training the Brain
Peple wh can accmplish unbelievable tasks, such as memrizing thusands f randm numbers in under an hur, state that they just have nrmal brains. Sme memry superstars cmpete in Olympic-like Wrld Memry Champinships. These mental athletes, r MAs fr shrt, can memrize names f dzens f strangers in a few minutes r any pem handed them. Ed Cke, a 24-year-ld MA, explains they see themselves as participants rescuing the lng-lst art f memry training. These techniques existed nt t recall useless infrmatin, but t cut int the brain basic text and ideas.
A study in the jurnal Nature examined eight peple wh finished near the tp f the Wrld Memry Champinships. The scientists examined whether their brains were fundamentally different frm everyne else’s r whether they were simply making better use f memrizing abilities we all pssess. They put the MAs and cntrl subjects int brain scanners and had them memrize numbers and phtgraphs. The result surprised everyne. The brains f the MAs and thse f the cntrl subjects were indistinguishable. On every test, the MAs scred in the nrmal range. Hwever, when the scientists examined what part f the brain was used during a memry activity, they fund the MAs relied mre heavily n areas in the brain invlved in spatial memry.
MAs ffer an explanatin: anything can be fixed upn ur memries and kept in rder by cnstructing a building in the imaginatin and filling it with pictures f what needs t be recalled. Dating back t the fifth century, the building is called a memry palace. Even as late as the furteenth century, when there were cpies f any text, schlars needed t remember what was read t them. Reading t remember requires a different technique than speed reading. If smething is made memrable, it has t be repeated. Until relatively recently, peple read nly a few bks intensively (细致地) again and again, usually alud. Tday we read extensively, usually nly nce and withut cntinuus fcus.
S the great difference is the ability t create impressive pictures in mind and t d it quickly. Using memry palaces, MAs create memrized pictures. Fr example, recmbine the pictures t frm unfrgettable scenes such as the ways thrugh a twn. One cmpetitr used his wn bdy parts t help him memrize a 57, 000-wrd dictinary.
Anyne wh wishes t train the mind needs first t create fantastical palaces in the imaginatin. Then they shuld cut each building int cubbyhles fr memries. In a shrt amunt f time, they will ntice imprvement with remembering things. T keep the skill sharp, MAs deliberately empty their palaces after cmpetitins, s they can reuse them and they recmmend that beginners d the same.
28. We can learn frm Paragraph 2 that a mental athlete ______.
A. wns a brain that is larger in size
B. shws a gift in mental ability tests
C. uses the memrizing technique better
D. depends less n the areas that cntrl spatial memry
29. Why des the authr mentin “speed reading” in Paragraph 3?
A. T discuss the memrizing technique in the fifth century.
B. T give the reasn why peple read nly a few bks carefully.
C. T explain the text furteenth century schlars had t remember.
D. T cmpare the type f reading nwadays with that f earlier times.
30. What can be inferred frm Paragraph 4?
A. There is a variety f unfrgettable scenes.
B. Memry palaces can be quickly frgtten.
C. Impressive pictures are in actual buildings.
D. One persn prbably has 57, 000 bdy parts.
31. What des the underlined wrd “cubbyhles” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A. Small spaces. B. Blacks hles.
C. Technical skills. D. Different numbers.

Scientists discvered in recent years a new way t edit genes that make up a persn’s DNA thrughut the bdy. The tl, called CRISPR-cas9, makes it pssible t change DNA t supply a needed gene r take ne away that is causing prblems. S far the tl has nly been used n adults t treat deadly diseases, and the changes nly affected that persn.
④Kiran Musunuru, a scientist frm University f Pennsylvania, tld the AP that if such an experiment had been carried ut n human beings, it culd nt be “mrally r ethically reasnable. ” Julian Savulescu, a medical ethics expert at Britain’s University f Oxfrd, agreed. “If true, this experiment may cause disasters, ” he tld Reuters.
Hwever, ne well-knwn geneticist, Harvard University’s Gerge Church, defended the attempt t edit genes t prevent infectins f HIV. He tld the AP that since HIV is “a majr and grwing public health threat” he finds such experiments “valuable”.
