BLiana nervously bit her nails while she waited for the exam to arrive. She looked around the room; hundreds of other law students sat in rows staring anxiously at the tables in front of them. Just as she began to take a deep breath to calm her anxiety, an exam booklet(册子) was placed in front of her. This was the moment she had been expecting ever since she began law school three years ago. She picked up her pencil, and opened to the first page of the bar exam, a test for all students wanting to become licensed lawyers. Liana never thought she would want to become a lawyer. Her parents were both artists. Law was something she had not been exposed to as a child. But art made for a tumultuous career—both of her parents had struggled to find jobs and worked round the clock when they were young. Even though they finally seemed successful and happy, Liana wanted something different. She was the anchor on her high school debate team, and consistently impressed her competitors with her analytical thinking. “Never argue with Ms Lakes. ” her teachers would say. So she chose to major in law. In her mind, she pictured herself in a New York City courtroom(法庭) dressed in an expensive suit, with papers in her hand, waving at the jury(陪审团) in a speech on human rights. But now, with the bar exam sitting in front of her, she started to worry. “What if I don’t pass? Did I study enough? ” Her thoughts raced through her mind. On the first page were seven paragraphs detailing a law situation followed by a series of questions. Liana read through the paragraphs, and quickly scribbled down an explanation of the first question before moving onto the next question. The next few hours went like this as the clock ticked closer and closer to the lunch hour. At 12: 00 p. m. sharp, a buzzer(蜂鸣器) sounded and everyone was told to put down their pencils and walked out for an hour-long lunch break. At lunch, Liana met her friend, Kevin. “How did it go? ” she asked. “To be honest, I’ve no idea. I just kept writing. ” Kevin said. Liana laughed and said she felt the same way. After lunch, the two exchanged words of encouragement. They strolled back into the exam center a bit more refreshed. Liana finished the second half of the exam that day with a better feeling than what she started with in the morning. 24. What do we know about the bar exam Liana is taking? A. It is for someone to be a qualified lawyer. B. It has many law situations to describe. C. It lasts for hours without stopping. D. It takes place every three years. 25. Liana wanted to be a lawyer because ______. A. she was good at arguing and debatingB. she wanted to follow her friend’s adviceC. she believed it would bring her a rich and happy lifeD. she aimed to devote herself to protecting human rights26. At the end of the exam, Liana felt more ______. A. nervous B. curiousC. energetic D. confident27. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The Wild Dream B. A True LawyerC. The Big Test D. A Hard ChoiceCWhen I was a child, not many of us grew up with pets in Asia. It was unusual to show sympathy towards animals. We learnt respect for our elders and for our government, and we learnt etiquette(礼仪)too, but rarely was it suggested that we extend any feelings towards animals, or indeed that animals have feelings. And because of this, many children in Asia grow up considering animals exist to serve us, feed us, entertain us and clothe us. I co-founded ACT Asia in 2006 with an Asian vet, to support the development of caring societies in Asia. While many nonprofits were already addressing human, animal and environmental concerns with direct action, I felt the cultural shock between continents was too great to ignore. We had to accept that change would not happen immediately, and that intervening(干预)would cause defence. First, we have to help societies understand the interdependence of people, animals and our natural habitat. Instead of stepping in to find fault, we stepped back and considered the cause. Millions of people live below the poverty line, and most left-behind children live without their parents, so it was clear that our biggest barrier was ignorance, not cruelty. With the future in mind, education is at the core of all we do. We should teach children about respect and kindness, and we see that a sense of responsibility is improving. By doing so, they are developing a keen sense of respect, to each other, for all species and our natural environment, but also for themselves. Given the chance to understand the truth about life on earth, many people—but children in particular—will choose compassion(同情)over cruelty. 28. What were the Asian children like when the author was a child? A. They never kept pets. B. They had no compassion. C. They didn’t pay attention to their behavior. D. They took it for granted that animals serve human. 29. What is the purpose of the ACT Asia? A. To find the causes of poverty in Asia. B. To appeal to people not to kill animals. C. To improve Asian’s sense of caring societies. D. To help solve the culture shock between countries. 30. What can we infer from the second paragraph? A. Direct action of many nonprofits was efficient. B. The change of caring societies would appear soon. C. People, animals and our natural habitat exist together. D. The biggest barrier of us was not ignorance but cruelty. 31. What does the author think of present Asian children’s sense of caring society? A. It is hopeless. B. It is satisfying. C. It is annoying. D. It is uncertain. DThe view you adopt for yourself significantly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you achieve the things you value. How does this happen? How can a simple belief have the power to transform your psychology and, as a result, your life? Believing that your qualities are carved in stone—the fixed mindset—creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. Some of us are trained in this mindset from an early age. Even as a child, I was focused on being smart, but the fixed mindset was really stamped in by Mrs Wilson, my sixth-grade teacher. She believed that people’s IQ scores told the whole story of who they were. We were seated around the room in IQ order, and only the highest-IQ students could be trusted to collect homework, or take a note to the principal. She was creating a mindset in which everyone in the class had one consuming goal—look smart, don’t look stupid. I’ve seen so many people with this one consuming goal of proving themselves—in the classroom, in their careers, and in their relationships. Every situation calls for a confirmation of their intelligence, personality, or character. Every situation is evaluated: Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or stupid? Will I feel like a winner or a loser? But doesn’t our society value intelligence, personality, and character? Isn’t it normal to want these qualities? Yes, but. . . There’s another mindset, the growth mindset, which is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can develop through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way—in their inborn talents, interests, or characters—everyone can change and grow through efforts and experience. Did you know that Darwin and Tolstoy were considered ordinary children? That the photographer Cindy Sherman, who has been on almost every list of the most important artists of the twentieth century, failed her first photography course. That Geraldine Page, one of our greatest actresses, was advised to give it up for lack of talent. You can see how the belief that valuable qualities can be developed creates a passion for learning. Why waste time proving how great you are, when could you be getting better? Why hide weaknesses instead of overcoming them? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even when it’s not going well, is the feature of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to achieve success during some of the most challenging times in their lives. 32. What is the author’s attitude towards Mrs Wilson’s way of teaching? A. Unconcerned. B. Sceptical. C. Supportive. D. Disapproving. 33. According to Paragraph 5, the example of Darwin and Tolstoy shows that ______. A. success has nothing to do with natural giftsB. achievements can be gained through hard workC. it’s difficult to predict one’s future successD. one single outcome defines our ability34. The author strongly believes that we should ______. A. carry out an honest evaluation of our qualitiesB. see success as a proof of intelligence or talentC. focus on self-development rather than self-provingD. believe good things will happen during difficult times35. The main purpose of the passage is to ______. A. explain the differences between two mindsetsB. persuade people to adopt the right mindsetC. inform people of the influence of mindsetD. advise people to assess their mindset第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。(2019·华中师大高一检测)Why people collect artMany people through history have gone to great lengths to collect art. But what motivates these collectors? One popular explanation for collecting is that they can have financial gain. Some resell works, earning enormous profit. 36 Immorally, some “collectors” buy art as a form of money laundering(洗钱), since it is far easier to move art than cash between counties without examination. 37 For them, art is important for other reasons. The best way to understand the underlying drive of art collecting is as a means to create and strengthen social bonds, and as a way for collectors to communicate within these new networks. Collectors are not only interested in creating social links; they are also motivated by the messages they can send once these social networks are created. We all know art is a powerful way for the artist to express thoughts and feelings. 38 Displaying art can send a message about who the collector really is—at least who she sees herself as. 39 Through the collections, collectors convey messages not just about themselves, but about the world as a whole. For example, the kid with the shoebox of bird feathers might show others her collection not just to make friends, but also to convince them about the importance of protecting endangered species. People collect art for various reasons. 40 A. Some gain art works in an illegal way. B. But most collectors think little of profit. C. Artworks preserve the qualities of their makers. D. It also serves as an effective way to express collectors. E. Some get large tax reductions for donating art to museums. F. No doubt art collection is a hard addiction to overcome. G. Other art collectors see their collections as having a broader power. 第三部分 语言运用 (共两节, 满分30分)第一节 (共15小题; 每小题1分, 满分15分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。The Fitting-in of Suzy KhanThe first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们). One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school. Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes. The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.
