I am standing outside my childhood primary school, near front gates and the teachers' car park. It is a bright sunny day and I am surrounded by my classmates. There must be more than a hundred of us.

I have a dim feeling that some of my teachers are nearby, but my attention is on two adults, neither of whom I recognize. I remember the details-from his hair to his golden sunglasses. The other man holds up some kind of device that emits a screaming. I drop to my knees with my hands against my ears. My schoolmates are all doing the same. The man is laughing.

I had that dream nearly 40 years ago, but I can remember the details as if it were yesterday. Ask me to relate anything from a dream I had earlier this week, however, and I draw a blank.

Sleep is more complicated than we once thought. Rather than being unconscious, our resting brains go through a roller-coaster of mental states. Dreaming is most closely associated with the sleep state known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM). In REM sleep, the eyes twitch rapidly, and it's at this stage that our brains tend to dream.

"If you're the kind of person who leaps up out of bed and goes about your day, you're not going to remember your dreams. When you sleep in on Saturday or Sunday morning, that's an excellent time to remember dreams," says Harvard Medical School sleep researcher Stickgold.

Stickgold says, "I tell people to drink three big glasses of water before they go to bed. Not three glasses of beer, because alcohol is an REM suppressant(抑制剂). You'll wake up three or four times in the night and you'll tend to wake up at the end of an REM cycle of sleep, which is natural."

Why build a house when you can print one instead? Startups(初创企业)around the world are now using 3 D printing technology for home construction. They say it's faster, cheaper and more sustainable than traditional methods. Printing houses can also save huge amounts of wood, metal and other construction materials that would otherwise be wasted by ending up in landfills(垃圾堆).

Currently, 3 D printing systems can equal the work output of 10 to 20 workers in five or six different trades, said Jason Ballard, CEO and co-founder of ICON, a 3 D printing construction startup, according to AP News. The machines can work 24 hours a day as well, saving developers both time and money.

So how do these 3 D printers "print" a house anyway? Machines deposit(使沉积)thin layers of material-such as concrete(混泥土), metal and plastic-until the three-dimensional house is built from the ground up. And a house can be completed within 120 hours, as was the case in the recent completion of the Netherlands' first 3 D printed house, according to CNN.

Ballard said that 3D printing was like the most powerful automation of all the automations we could discover. This powerful automation has the potential to prevent rising prices in the housing market, homelessness and overcrowding. But the technology behind 3 D printing houses is still in its early stages of development. For example, ICON alone has only printed 24 houses in the US and Mexico. But, that isn't stopping visionaries(梦想家)from dreaming of larger applications of this technology.

"With the 3D printed home, we're now setting the tone for the future: the rapid realization of affordable homes with control over the shape of your own house," said Yasin Torunoglu, alderman (市议员)for housing in the community of the Netherlands' first 3D printed house.

Robots in the art world are nothing new. In fact, for centuries, people have built robots as art objects, beginning with automatons(自动机器)-or simple machines that perform a series of movements-in ancient China and Japan. However, what's different now is that artists and engineers are building robots that actually create art.

In 1973, British-born painter Harold Cohen wrote a computer program and called it AARON. At first, AARON only made simple outlines whose color and details Cohen would later add. Fifty years later, AARON is able to paint people, landscapes and just about anything else a human could paint. So can AARON be called an artist or creative? In 2010, Cohen addressed these questions. He explained, "Although he wrote the initial computer code that AARON follows, AARON can generate unlimited numbers of images." So according to Cohen, the simple answer is yes-AARON is creative.

It's not just paintings that robots are creating, though. Last year, a robot called Shimon released its first album on Spotify. Shimon began life as a simple robot marimba(木琴)player. Over the years, however, it's learned how to jam(即兴演出)with other musicians, write original songs and compose lyrics. Shimon does this by analyzing huge amounts of music-roughly 50, 000 rock, jazz and hip-hop songs-to identify patterns and then uses that information to create original works.

It may be cool to hear a song created by a robot, but is there any other reason to build robots that can play music? According to Gil Weinberg, one of Shimon's creators, because the robot is capable of doing things that a real musician might not think of, he and his team "hope and believe that these new abilities would push human cooperators to new uncharted directions that could not be achieved in human-to-human cooperation."

While questions about robots creating art are fun to think about, there are many other ways that robots can help artists in the way they create their works. For example, advancements in 3D-printing technology will allow artists to build more complex pieces for their sculptures. Therefore, robots in the art world are here to stay.
