There once was a master who went to India. In those times, people didn’t have the communications or airplanes or many kinds of transportation that we do now. So the master went to India on foot. He had never been to India before; perhaps he came from Persia. And when he got there, he saw a lot of fruit. In India they have plenty of fruit to sell, but much of it is expensive because they can’t grow much due to the water situation. So he saw one basket, a big basket of some very red, long fruit. And it was the cheapest in the shop, not expensive at all.
So he went up and asked, "How much per kilo?" And the shopkeeper said, "Two rupees." Two rupees in India is nothing; it’s like dirt. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. But after he ate some of it: Oh, my God! His eyes watered, his mouth watered and burned, his eyes were burning, his head was burning and his face became red. As he coughed and choked and gasped for breath, he jumped up and down, saying, "Ah! Ah! Ah!"
But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said, "You’re crazy, man. Those are chilies! You can’t eat so many; they’re not good for you! People use them as a condiment, but only a little bit to put into food for taste. You can’t just eat them by the handful like that; they’re not fruit!"
So the stupid master said: "No, I can’t stop! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat them. It’s my money!"
And you think that master was stupid, right? Similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. We invest money, time or effort in a relationship, business or job. And even though it’s been a long time, bitter experience tells us it won’t work, and we know there’s no more hope that things will change in the future —this we definitely know by intuition—we still continue just because we’ve invested money, time, effort and love into it. If so, we’re kaput in the brain. Just like the man who ate the chilies and suffered so much but couldn’t stop because he didn’t want to waste the money he’d paid.
So even if you’ve lost something, let it go and move on. That’s better than continuing to lose.
    1. Which of the following is NOT the master’s reaction to eating the very red, long fruit?
    A. His eyes and mouth watered and were burning.
    B. His eyes, face and head caught a burning fire.
    C. He coughed, choked and gaped for breath.
    D. He jumped up and down, making loud noise.
    2. Some passers-by’s attitude towards the master’s eating chilies is ______.
    A. negative B. supportive C. enthusiastic D. favorable
    3. What is the writer’s aim of writing this passage?
    A. To amuse us with a funny story of a stubborn master.
    B. To warn us not to eat too much chilli at one time.
    C. To encourage us to cherish what we already have.
    D. To teach us to let go of losses and be positive.
根据第二段“His eyes watered, his mouth watered and burned, his eyes were burning, his head was burning and his face became red. As he coughed and choked and gasped for breath, he jumped up and down, saying," Ah! Ah! Ah!”(他的眼睛湿润了,他的嘴湿润了,他的眼睛灼热,他的头灼热,他的脸通红。他又咳又呛,喘不过气来,一边跳上跳下,一边说:“啊!啊!啊!”)可知,A、C、D是正确的,他的眼睛、脸和头并没有都着了火。故选B项。

    【3题详解】
推理判断题,根据最后一段“So even if you've lost something, let it go and move on. That's better than continuing to lose”(所以,即使你失去了什么,也要放手,继续前进,这总比继续输好)可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是教我们放下失落,保持积极的心态。故选D项。
    B
Many people see empathy as a force for good deeds that make the world better. Evil has been viewed as “empathy loss”. People are urged to express greater empathy in everyday life, and children are being taught to empathize more in school.
One issue is that people use the term empathy differently: if seen as having the same meaning as kindness, it seems right. But what about when we mean the ability to share others’ feelings? This has its advantages, but as a guide for moral decisions, it is no longer desirable.
Firstly, neuroscience and everyday experience both show that it’s relatively easy to put yourself in the shoes of someone close, who is attractive and friendly, or who looks like you. But empathy for your enemies, for distant strangers? That’s a lot less natural. Also, empathy makes us focus on an individual. We can’t put ourselves in the shoes of a million people or even a dozen. Finally, empathy can be used wrongly to make people back all sorts of positions, including cruel ones. The more we empathize with someone who suffers, the more we wish to attack those causing the suffering.
There is no shortage of real-world examples of how this can affect judgment, like when the empathy caused by stories of innocent victims results in hatred for minorities or is used to gain support for an unnecessary war.
It’s good, then, that we can go beyond empathy. Rationalism (理性) can guide us to see that skin color doesn’t determine the value of a life and that one person is not worth more than a hundred and that important decisions should be based on cost-benefit analyses and appeal to moral principles.
Some worry that if we don’t empathize with others and don’t feel their pain, we won’t care enough to help. But the drive to improve people’s lives doesn’t require putting ourselves in their shoes. Indeed, when volunteers are taught to be compassionate without empathy, they become kinder and enjoy helping. In contrast, action motivated by the empathic urge is often tiring –it’s unpleasant to experience others suffering.
Empathy is a source of pleasure—strengthening the joy of literature, for instance—and central to close relationships. But for moral choices there are better alternatives.
    4. What can we learn about empathy from Paragraph 1?
    A. It is a cure for all of the social evils.
    B. It is often seen as a drive for kindness.
    C. It’s important for personal development.
    D. It is a barrier to making progress in school.
    5. When is empathy undesirable according to the author?
    A. When it is used frequently.
    B. When it refers to selflessness.
    C. When it refers to the ability to care for others.
    D. When it is used as a guide for moral choices.
    6. What can be inferred from paragraph 5 and 6?
    A. Rationality can guide us to empathic behavior.
    B. The drive to help others comes from empathy.
    C. Compassion can motivate people to help others.
    D. The empathic urge can bring pleasure to people.
    7. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Rationality’s great power. B. Empathy’s dangerous pull.
    C. Empathy makes the world better. D. Rationality leads to poor judgment.
B 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据第一段第一句“Many people see empathy as a force for good deeds that make the world better. Evil has been viewed as “empathy loss”.(许多人将同理心视为一种力量,可以做一些让世界变得更美好的好事。邪恶被认为是“同理心的丧失”)”可知,同理心被人们当做一种做好事的驱动力。故选B项。
    【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But what about when we mean the ability to share others’ feelings? This has its advantages, but as a guide for moral decisions, it is no longer desirable.(但是,当我们指的是分享他人感受的能力时,又如何呢?这有其优点,但作为道德决策的指南,它已不再可取)”可知,当把同理心作为道德决策的指导时,就不再受到人们的欢迎了。故选D项。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段第一句“It’s good, then, that we can go beyond empathy.(那么,我们可以超越同理心会更好)”及第六段“Indeed, when volunteers are taught to be compassionate without empathy, they become kinder and enjoy helping.( 事实上,当志愿者被教导要有同情心而没有同理心时,他们会变得更善良,并乐于助人)”可知,同情心也可以促使人们去帮助别人。
根据第一段“Many people see empathy as a force for good deeds that make the world better. Evil has been viewed as “empathy loss”. People are urged to express greater empathy in everyday life, and children are being taught to empathize more in school.(许多人将同理心视为一种力量,可以做一些让世界变得更美好的好事。邪恶被认为是“同理心的丧失”。人们被敦促在日常生活中表达更多的同理心,孩子们在学校也被教导要更多地同理心)”和第二段“But what about when we mean the ability to share others’ feelings? This has its advantages, but as a guide for moral decisions, it is no longer desirable.(但是,当我们指的是分享他人感受的能力时,又如何呢?这有其优点,但作为道德决策的指南,它已不再可取)”及最后一段“Empathy is a source of pleasure—strengthening the joy of literature, for instance—and central to close relationships. But for moral choices there are better alternatives.(同理心是快乐的源泉——例如,加强文学的快乐——也是亲密关系的核心。但就道德选择而言,还有更好的选择)”可知,文章开始表示人们认为有同理心会使世界更美好,更互助,但是后面也警告大家注意它的负面影响,不应该作为道德选择的原则,倡导理性。B项“同理心的危险影响”可以作为本文标题。故选B项。

    【答案】Dear Joe,
I’ve been indulged in the phone games and internet novels and I don’t know how to deal with it. Thus I’m writing to ask you for some advice.
Trapped into a virtual world, I can barely concentrate on my study, which has caused bad marks for several times. Aware of the harm they have done to me, I have made an effort to avoid these evil things. However, I failed without firm determination. I just can’t tear myself away from my smart phone. Then it struck me that I’d like to turn to you for help after your class, I will appreciate it a lot if you could tell me how American students strike a balance between study and entertainment and offer me some suggestions. I guess different methods may make a big difference.
I’m longing for your advice and sorry to bother you.
    Yours,

Bees are important to the production of food we eat. Bees make honey, but they also pollinate (授粉)large areas of crops, such as straw berries, apples and onions. About a third of the food we eat is a result of pollination of the bees. Unfortunately, bees have been disappearing at an alarming rate.
In 2010, bee keepers started reporting about something called Colony Collapse Disaster (CCD).The main sign of CCD is the loss of adult honey bees from a hive(蜂巢). In October of 2010, some beekeepers reported that they had lost between 30 and 90 percent of their hives.
There were many theories for the disappearance of the bees. But the most convincing one has to do with pesticides and lifestyles of bees today. Nowadays, beekeepers get most of their income not from producing honey but from renting bees to pollinate plants. This means that the life of the typical bee now consists of travelling all around the country to pollinate crops as the seasons change. That means a lot of traveling on trucks, which is very stressful to bees. It is not unusual for up to 30% of the hive to die during transport due to stress. In addition, bees that spend most of their time locked up on trucks are not exposed to what they usually live on. Instead, they live on a sweet liquid from corn, usually polluted with pesticides.
The exact reason for the disappearance of bees is not sure, but losing bees is very costly to the economy. The bee pollination services are worth over $8 billion a year. With no bees, pollination will have to be done by hand, which would have effects on the quality of food and increased food priced. We hear a lot about big environmental disasters almost every day. But one of the biggest may just be the less of that tiny flying insect.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Bees, playing a significant part in producing our food, are now suffering a sharp decline in number. (要点1)And reports of the loss started in 2010, for which the most persuasive theory lies in the stressful lifestyle of being transported to pollinate plants and feeding on polluted corns.(要点2) Sadly, the loss of such tiny creatures will be disastrous to our economy.
