As intros to backpacking go, this might be pushing it. At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day, 27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon—his first backpacking trip—when he asks, “Are we almost to camp?, Um, no. Camp, at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below, that will take us several more hours.
We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote to me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you’re a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when I’m old enough for the Grand Canyon.”
There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven’t backpacked for 13 years.
We go down a poorly maintained path off the canyon with twisty trees and twining bushes. Gradually the view broadens, the landscape in Vishnu fascinates Kai greatly. “This place is amazing,” he says. Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. Hearing the sound of a waterfall, we lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable.”
Wednesday, we travel three miles to Monument Creek, and hike a mile and 1,000 feet down to the Colorado River. The next morning a t 7:30 when we march out, I’m optimistic, and Kai sets a quick pace. Friday, we rise before dawn and are the first ones out of camp; for an hour we have the Bright Angel Trail and its soaring (高耸的) scenery to ourselves.
In that birthday card, Kai had also written, “Even when you’re 100, you will always be wild.” Nice. If I’m lucky enough to make it there, it looks like I’ll have company.
4. According to the author, he goes backpacking in the Grand Canyon with Kai ________.
A. to promote the father-and-son relationship
B. to satisfy Kai’s desire for the Grand Canyon
C. to fulfill Kai’s birthday wish
D. to develop Kai’s strong will
5. What is true about the author?
A. He has been engaged in backpacking for years.
B. He tends to make sufficient preparations for backpacking in advance.
C. He favors an experience-appropriate trip for his son.
D. He is enthusiastic about meeting challenges.
6. How does Kai probably feel during the trip?
A. Exhausted. B. Relieved. C. Thrilled. D. Desperate.
7. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. Kai hopes his dad will live a long life.
B. Kai believes his dad will be wilder in the future.
C. The author doubts whether he can live as old as 100.
D. The author enjoys Kai’s company during the trip.

AI? 5G, cloud computing and other digital technologies are not only changing our lives but shaping the economy as well. China’s six major commercial banks are stepping up digital wallet efforts to encourage the e-CNY trials in the country, as reported by Shanghai Securities News on March 23.
The functions of the e-CNY are exactly the same as those of the paper currency, except that the form is digital,” said Mu Changchun, head of the People’s Bank of China’s Digital Currency Research Institute.
Many people are puzzled by e-CNY and electronic payments. “Digital currency has the characteristics of both paper money and electronic payment?” said Wu Qianhong, a professor at the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Beihang University. “In theory, digital currency can replace paper money, Alipay and WeChat payments.”
Compared with Alipay and WeChat payments, e-CNY features anonymity (匿名性) and security. E-commerce platforms that accept payments via e-CNY will not have access to users’ personal information. E-CNY users can open an anonymous digital wallet by registering a mobile phone number, and telecom operators cannot disclose customer information to the central bank or any third-party institutions. Mu said that e-CNY users’ privacy protection is at the highest level among all the existing payment tools.
Similar to Alipay and WeChat payments, using e CNY requires an account. After obtaining the other party’s account number, users can enter the amount of digital money to be transferred (转账) and then enter the payment password to complete the transaction (交易). However, the processes behind these transfers are different. For electronic payments, the transfer has to go through a third party, and the receivers will get the transferred money only when they withdraw money from banks. But e-CNY transfers only need a payer and a receiver to complete a transaction. Therefore, it guarantees risk-free payments, according to Wu.
In simple terms, e-CNY can be considered “money”, while electronic payments are like “wallets”. “Since Alipay and WeChat Pay are payment channels, they can use e-CNY for payment after upgrading,” said Wu.
“The promotion of e-CNY is a gradual and inclusive process”, Cheng Shi, the chief economist and managing director of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China International, wrote in an article for China Daily.
8. What can we know about e-CNY?
A. It is issued by six major commercial banks.
B. Its functions exactly resemble those of other payment tools.
C. It combines the features of paper money as well as electronic payment.
D. It is aimed at replacing paper money, Alipay and WeChat payments.
9. What does the underlined word “disclose” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Claim. B. Reveal. C. Deliver. D. Confirm.
10. What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A. E-CNY is more convenient and secure than other electric payments.
B. E-CNY ensures security the same way as other electronic payments do.
C. E-CNY transfers have to be made through a third party.
D. E-CNY can be transferred without the receivers information.
11. What’s the main purpose of the article?
A. To compare different types of payment.
B To inform readers of digital RMB.
C. To promote the use of e-CNY.
D. To describe the influence of digital technologies.
D
The moon, which has experienced a distinct and complex geological history, presents a striking appearance. The moon may be divided into two major terrains: the Maria (dark lowlands) and the Terrace (bright highlands). The contrast in the reflectivity (he capability of reflecting light) of these two terrains suggested to many early observers that the two terrains might have different compositions, and this assumption was confirmed by missions to the moon such as Surveyor and Apollo.
One of the most obvious differences between the terrains is the smoothness of the Maria in contrast to the roughness of the highlands. This roughness is mostly caused by the abundance of craters: the highlands are completely covered by large craters, while the craters of the Maria tend to be much smaller. It is now known that the vast majority of the moon’s craters were formed by the impact of solid bodies with the lunar surface.
Most of the near side of the moon was thoroughly mapped and studied from telescopic pictures years before the age of space exploration. Earth-based telescopes can recognize objects as small as a few hundred meters on the lunar surface. Close observation of craters, combined with the way the moon diffusely reflects sunlight, led to the understanding that the moon is covered by a surface layer with strange, winding marks. Although various land forms were discovered, the majority of astronomers’ attention was fixed on craters and their origins.
Astronomers have known for a fairly long time that the shape of craters changes as they increase in size. Small craters have relatively simple shapes. They have round-edged tops that are raised above the surrounding terrain, smooth, bowl-shaped insides, and depths that are about one-sixth their diameters. The complexity of shape increases for larger craters.
12. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. The aim of the Surveyor and Apollo space missions.
B Characteristics of the major terrains of the moon.
C. The origin of the moon’s craters.
D. Techniques used to discover the moon’s land forms.
13. Why are the Surveyor and Apollo missions mentioned?
A. To confirm earlier theories about the moon’s surface.
B. To reveal that previous ideas about the moon’s craters were unreasonable.
C. To provide detailed information about the moon’s surface.
D. To identify how the moon’s craters were made.
14. The author mentions “strange, winding marks” in paragraph 3 as an example of ________.
A. an aspect of the lunar surface discovered through lunar missions
B. a characteristic of large craters
C. a discovery made through the use of earth-based telescopes
D. features that astronomers observed to be common to the earth and the moon
15. The last paragraph probably continues with ________.
A. some difference in the ways small and large craters were formed
B. the different shapes small craters can have
C. the reasons craters are difficult to study
D. the description of some features of large craters

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D
