Teenagers frm lw-incme families in particular are mre likely than their middle-class peers(同龄人)t d less well in schlwrk and t drp ut f schl. Studies have shwn, hwever, that a psitive attitude twards schlwrk and the supprt and encuragement frm their parents can help at-risk yungsters t vercme the ecnmic barriers and lack f resurces they face. Mst f the evidence abut the effects f parental invlvement(参与) cmes frm research n mthers. Little is knwn, hwever, abut hw teenagers experience their fathers' warmth and the beliefs and behavir that are mst affected by it.
This new study is part f a large ne fcusing n lw-incme families cnducted in fur middle schls in the suthwestern United States. Researchers asked 183 sixth-graders abut hw ptimistic and mtivated they were abut their schlwrk, and hw they experienced their fathers' warmth. The students' maths and language arts grades were als gained. The research team tk int accunt the influence that mthers have n their children's well-being in their analyses.
Their findings shw hw fathers can supprt their teenagers in ways that result in greater ptimism and higher achievement at schl. "Lw-incme fathers affect their teenagers' beliefs abut themselves and their future, and these beliefs influence their achievement by increasing their determinatin t cmplete schl tasks," says Dr. Marie-Anne.
These psitive effects extend t bth sns and daughters, althugh in different ways. Experiencing their fathers' warmth first influences daughters' sense f ptimism, and then spills ver int their feeling mre determined and certain abut their academic abilities. This in turn leads t better maths grades. There is a mre direct link between their fathers' lve and bys' belief in their ability t succeed in academy.
    28. What is mre likely t happen t teenagers frm lw-incme families?

    C. It mainly applies t girls rather than bys. D. It has a mre direct effect n girls than n bys.
    31. Which f the fllwing best explains "spills ver" underlined in the last paragraph?

Captured(捕获的)carbn dixide (CO2) culd be used t extract(提炼)useful metals frm recycled technlgy such as smartphne batteries rather than just being buried undergrund. The technique culd help make it mre ecnmical t capture the greenhuse gas befre it enters the atmsphere.
"If yu als extract metals by filling CO2, yu add value t a prcess that is knwn t be cstly," says Julien Leclaire at the University f Lyn, France.
CO2 is the main cause f mdern climate change, s many peple have attempted t develp technlgies t capture it when it cmes frm pwer plants and ther majr surces. The gas can then be stred undergrund. The prblem is that such carbn capture and strage (CCS) is expensive. "N ne wants t pay the price fr it," says Leclaire.
T make CCS mre appealing, Leclaire's team has fund a use fr the gas.
His team cllected CO2 frm a car gas, cled it, then pumped it int a mix f chemicals. The CO2 cmbined with the mix t make many mlecules(分子)f varius shapes and sizes.
The team fund that this prcess culd srt ut mixtures f metals, because ne metal wuld disslve(溶解)in the liquid while anther wuld frm a slid. In a series f experiments, they successfully separated three kinds f metals-all f which are used in batteries, smartphnes and cmputers.
If the prcess can be widely used, it culd be a mre envirnmentally friendly way t recycle batteries and ther electrical equipment, says Leclaire. This is nrmally dne using highly reactive chemicals, which are ptentially plluting. Replacing them with CO2 shuld lead t a much lwer envirnmental pllutin, he says.
Other researchers and cmpanies are trying t change captured CO2 int useful materials like plastics, which are nrmally prduced frm petrl, but this is chemically difficult. Leclaire says his apprach is mre in line with hw CO2 behaves naturally. "Instead f cpying what we knw hw t d better and cheaper with il, let's find things yu can nly d with CO2," he says.
    32. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
    A. Extracting useful metals frm recycled technlgy is widely used nw.
    B. Useful metals in the atmsphere are used t make smartphne batteries.
    C. Abandned smartphne batteries may have been buried undergrund befre.
    D. The greenhuse gas CO2 culd be cleaned up after entering the atmsphere.
    33. Why are many peple attempting t capture CO2?
    A. CO2 is the main cause f mdern climate change.
    B. CO2 can be used t recycle many resurces.
    C. Captured CO2 can be changed t useful gas.
    D. CO2 is harmful t peple's health.
    34. What benefit culd Leclaire's team's apprach bring?
    A. It culd end the use f plastics.
    B. It culd reduce envirnmental pllutin.
    C. It culd make mre metals available t humans.
    D. It culd help reduce the cst f battery prductin.
    35. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. The Ways t Make Smartphne Batteries
    B. The Reasn fr Capturing Greenhuse Gas
    C. Cllecting CO2 Is Starting t Make New Prgress
    D. Captured CO2 Culd Be Used t Help Recycle Useful Metals
