For 36 years, he dedicated himself to one thingleading villagers to create and then maintain a 9.4-kilometer-long“life canal" to bring fresh water to the village. With the irrigation channel in place, people in Caowangba finally had sufficient drinking water and could irrigate rice and other crops boosting their incomes and improving their quality of life. The channel is named the “Dafa Canal" in Huang's honor.

Huang has been dubbed the modern“ Yu Gong" , a figure in China's folklore. Like Yu Gong, his persistence also made the impossible possible. In 1959 Huang became a leader in the village. “I decided to do three things for the villagers: bring water to the village, build a road and provide access to electricity ,”Huang said, recalling his early days. He found that a village near Caowangba had water to spare, but the problem was that a mountain lay between then. Nevertheless, he took on the task.

Things did not go well at first. After more than 10 years, water remained a pipe dream. Although some people said that Caowangba would never gel access to water , Huang never lost hope. At the age of 53, he started to study water conservancy technology on his own. After three years , with his newfound knowledge and persistencehe raised money from the local government and had 200 people dig the canal. Their work paid off in 1995 when water finally rushed into Caowangba, The same year, the village gained access to electricity, and a new road was built. All three projects were overseen by Huang.

Huang's effort's won him the titles of“ National Model Worker" and “Model of the Times" in 2021.

A BUTTERFLY-SHAPED island in the central Aegean hopes lo become Greece's first carbon-free tourist destination. Under a deal with the government, Volkswagen, a carmaker, has donated several

new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services; it will sell others at cost price to its 1,200 residents. In return, the government has offered some money for islanders lo buy electric cars and will build a hybrid solar and wind-fueled power plant lo replace a group o[ polluting diesel-fired generators(柴油发电机)

Unlike other nearby islands, Astypalea is not connected 10 Greece's electricity grid. With only

3 ,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats , tourism is still low-key. Many residents make a living in the old-fashioned ways: raising goats keeping bees and fishing. The island was selected for Volkswagen's e-mobility experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor, contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rugged roads.

Most islanders sound keen on the project, Mr. Komineas expects the number of private cars on

Aslypalea to fall by a third over the next five years. Its residents, he says, will get around on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which will be freelinked 1o a mobile-phone app and available all day.

Some observers find the plan a little impractical. A plan for a solar park that would generate half the island's electricity within three years will not get under way before the tourist season ends. A single wind turbine (涡轮机) will be installed only in 2026, assuming the licensing process goes smoothly. That is not normally the case in the Aegean, where islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is spoiled by a turbine 200 meters high, And even then, the hybrid power unit is planned to cover only about 80% of summer demand. But it is a start.

    28. Why did Volkswagen donate some new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services?

    A. The carmaker wanted to promote its sales volume in this butterfly-shaped island.

    B. The government would pay for the vehicles to reduce the pollution caused by transport.

    C. It was part o[ the plan to make the island the first carbon-free tourist destination in Greece.

    D. The islanders wanted to replace some polluting diesel-fired generators.

    29. According to the text , which of the following statements is WRONG?

    A. Many residents in the island still lead a traditional life.

B, The tourism in the island is its main source of economic benefit.

    C. The island can only provide about 3 ,000 rooms for visitors.

    D. The island was chosen to perform the e-mobility experiment,

    30. What's the author's altitude towards the plan?

    A. Cautious.         B. Pessimistic.         C. Positive.       D. Indifferent.

    31. What's the main idea of the text?

    A. An island in Greece wants to boost tourism without using electricity.

    B. Greece aims to become the first carbon-free country in the world,

    C. A carmakerVolkswagen donates electric cars to an island to boost the local tourism.

    D. An island plans to be the first carbon-free tourist destination in its country.

The moon's permanently shadowed areas nearly 384, 000 kilometers away from home, are the closest water source outside the earth. The craters have been dark since billions of years ago. But now with student-developed technologies more about them can be discovered,

Through the competitive Breakthrough, Innovative and Came-changing ( BIG) Idea Challenge and the Space Grant project, NASA has awarded nearly $1 million to eight university teams. They will build sample lunar payloads and demonstrate innovative ways to study the moon's darkest areas.

It's an exciting time for NASA and students across the country," said Drew J, Hope, Program Manager of Game Changing Development program.“ Thanks to our partnership with the Office of STEM Engagement, this is the most money NASA has awarded in a student challenge directly connected to Artemis."

The chosen teams will work out ways to gather data in and around the craters, generate wireless power for future infrastructure and enable autonomous mobility even in the most extreme environments, The research results could benefit NASA's Artemis program and be used to study the moon ahead of a human landing in 2024 or help establish a sustained presence by 2028. Each team will receive different amounts of grants based on the concept and budget they propose. They will develop and test the technologies in simulated environments with the awards during the following 10 monthsshowing they are prepared for a possible lunar mission as early as 2023. Then in November 2020, a panel of NASA and industry experts will examine the team's research and development results at a face-to-face design review.

“One of the most exciting things about this challenge is that several of the concepts, if proven to be viable as a result of these awards, could eventually be integrated and operated together on the surface of the moon," according to Chad Rowe, Acting Manager of Space Grant Project.“These students are part of the Artemis generation and they are helping ful6ll NASA's mission needs today, while developing relevant hands-on experience that will prepare them for aerospace careers after graduation.

    32. What can we know from Paragraph 1?

    A. The moon can't serve as a water source for us.

    B. Some students are working in NASA.

    C. The moon is the only water source outside the earth.

    D. We can explore more about the moon.

    33. Why did NASA award those eight university teams?

    A. Because they stood out in a challenge and a project.

    B. Because they demonstrated technologies to study the moon.

    C. Because they explored the mystery of space.

    D. Because they challenged NASA's Artemis program.

    34. What will the chosen teams work out according to Paragraph 4?

    A. The way to create WIFT on the moon for future use.

    B. The way to ensure autonomous mobility can be used in space.

    C. The way to examine the research and results face-to-face.

    D. The way to collect information and statistics of the moon.

    35. According to Chad Rowe, what benefit can the students get from the project?

    A. They can land on the moon.

    B. They can get money while doing the job.

    C. They can gain experience for their future careers.
