I didn't know how I was going to pay that bill,” Mangano says.
But she had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop the floor. “I was tired, of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing (拧) out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, There's gotta be a better way.”
How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markets.
Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷) buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed Mangano was sure it would sell if they'd let her do the on-camera display. She said, “Get me on that stage, and I will sell this mop because it's a great item.”
So QVC, a multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping, took a chance on her. “I got onstage and the phones went crazy. We sold every mop in minutes.”

Why can friendships be hard? Because often people aren't as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people end up getting hurt.
Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should guard against.
The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated. This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friend everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes.
Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are issues that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these issues so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Issues like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are issues that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship.
8. Why may problems with friendships appear?
A. One is selfish. B. One is alone.
C. One is too anxious. D. One is too busy.
9. What's the first and most important thing to be other people's friend?
A. Not to hurt your friends' feelings.
B. To give your friends whatever you have.
C. To treat your friends as fairly as possible.
D. Not to think of your own needs any more.
10. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Meaning of Friendships
B. The Importance of Friendships
C. The Advantages of Friendships
D. The Problems with Friendships
11. What may follow the last paragraph of the text?
A. How to make many friends.
B. How to keep friends happy.
C. How to treat friends correctly.
D. How to solve friendship issues.
D
Earthquakes are a natural disaster—except when they're man-made. The oil and gas industry has forcefully used the technique known as hydraulic fracturing (水力压裂法) to destroy sub-surface rock and liberate the oil and gas hiding there. But the process results in large amounts of chemical-filled waste water. Horizontal drilling (水平钻孔) for oil can also produce large amount of natural, unwanted salt water. The industry deals with this waste water by pumping it into deep wells.
On Monday, the US Geological Survey published for the first time an earthquake disaster map covering both natural and “induced” quakes. The map and a report show that parts of the central United States now face a ground-shaking disaster equal to the famously unstable terrain (不稳定地形) of California.
Some 7 million people live in places easily attacked by these man-made quakes, the USGS said The list of places at highest risk of man-made earthquakes includes Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio and Alabama. Most of these earthquakes are relatively small, in the range of magnitude (震级) 3, but some have been more powerful, including a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in 2011 in Oklahoma that was connected to waste water filling.
Scientists said they do not know if there is an upper limit on the magnitude of man-made earthquakes; this is an area of active research. Oklahoma has had prehistoric earthquakes as powerful as magnitude 7.
It's not immediately clear whether this new research will change industry practices, or even whether it will surprise anyone in the areas of newly supposed danger. In Oklahoma, for example, the natural rate of earthquakes is only one or two a year, but there have been hundreds since hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, with the waste water filling, became common in the last ten years.
12. What kind of human activities can cause earthquakes?
A. The man-made produced waste water in the factories.
B. The process of digging deep wells in those poor areas.
C. The advanced techniques used to deal with waste water.
D. The oil or gas industry's work connected with the earth.
13. What does the underlined word “induced” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Man-made. B. Reduced.
C. Newly-built. D. Controlled.
14. How much magnitude can man-made earthquakes reach?
A. It's been said as small as magnitude 3.
B. It has been said as high as magnitude 7.
C. It's being studied without a final conclusion.
D. It has risen by an average of magnitude 5. 6.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Natural Earthquakes in America Are Disappearing Now
B. 7 Million Americans at Risk of Man-Made Earthquakes
C. Time for Oil and Gas Industry Change Their Working Practice
D. More Often Earthquakes as Powerful as Magnitude 7 in America

How to Speak in Public
Many people have a fear of public speaking. They worry that they will lose their tongue, bore the audience or somehow make a fool of themselves. It is easy to try to avoid public speaking, but that usually doesn't work out. Everyone has to speak publicly at some point in their life. You may give a speech in a class or a meeting. Maybe you'll have to give a speech for some honor you've received. 16
Relax. 17 Your audience don't expect you to be perfect. They want you to succeed just as much as you do. If you're thinking you'll forget everything, remind yourself that you are prepared and knowledgeable. Imagine yourself doing well.
Be yourself. You are not Jack Canfield or Tony Robbins. Share your true personality with your audience, and they'll find you reliable. 18
Know your topic. Try to speak about the subject you know well. Research the topic to make sure that you are correct. Public speaking is easier when you don't feel like a fraud (骗子).
19 Choose your message for the group you are speaking to carefully. If you're giving a public speech, then rude jokes certainly won't be suitable.
Give value. Base your speech on 2 or 3 main points. 20 They'll be satisfied if they leave with something they can use, and that is what public speaking is all about.
A. Know your audience.
B. Choose a serious message.
C. Don't force yourself to be perfect.
D. Don't focus your attention on too many points.
E. Pretend to be someone that you're not, and they'll discover it.
F. Your audience will not remember every little detail you tell them.
G. Follow these steps to satisfy your audience and overcome your fear of speaking publicly.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I'm afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It's okay, just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mom's advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What's worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!”
Emily didn't argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could.
Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl. Don't cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn't matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don't be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”
